Francesco Totti's son forced to quit football aged 19 as heartbreaking reason emerges

Daily Mirror3 days ago
Cristian Totti, son of Roma and Italy icon Francesco, has called time on his playing career at 19 after leaving Italian fourth-tier side Olbia at the end of last season for a gut-wrenching reason
The son of Roma and Italy legend Francesco Totti has retired from football due to the burden of living up to his legendary father's reputation. Cristian, 19, has ended his playing career after departing fourth-tier club Olbia last season. Having begun at Roma, he was initially expected to mirror his father's illustrious path.

The 48-year-old dedicated his entire playing career to the Stadio Olimpico, clocking up 786 matches and cementing his status as a club legend. He also earned 58 international caps for Italy and featured in their triumphant 2006 World Cup campaign under Marcello Lippi, reports the Express.

Totti Jr. was photographed with his dad following his final Serie A outing in May 2017. Nevertheless, Cristian never secured a first-team appearance for I Giallorossi and transferred to Spanish outfit Rayo Vallecano before returning to Italy. He would play for Serie D side Avezzano before heading to Olbia last August, where he didn't last long, and had been without a club since.

Despite retiring from playing, the teenager will continue within football. He will work alongside his elder brother Riccardo as part of the 'Totti Soccer School', situated in Ostia Lido.
Cristian will be tasked with spotting emerging talent and collaborating with the academy's general manager, Claudio D'Ulisse. His previous manager at Olbia, Marco Amelia, had earlier maintained he possessed the capability to succeed professionally.
"I wanted him because he was a player with great skills," said Amelia, who was a team-mate of the youngster's father during Italy's 2006 World Cup triumph.
"A midfielder capable of creating plays, reading between the defensive lines, creating, but also good at winning the ball back when he wasn't in possession.
"In my opinion, he would have had a very good playing career in Serie C and Serie B. Being Totti's son influenced his assessments. There was too much pressure."

Totti isn't the first young star to have faced such pressure. Former Manchester United winger Jordi Cruyff's career was plagued by constant comparisons to his father, while ex-Leicester goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel emulated his father by winning the Premier League, for example.
The 19-year-old's retirement comes eight years after his father emotionally bid farewell to the game and left football behind, stating: "We're here; the moment has arrived. Unfortunately, the moment has arrived that I hoped would never come.
"Over the last few days, so much has been said about me, such wonderful things. You were behind me, pushing me on during difficult moments, and that's why I want to say thank you to everyone.

"I cried on my own, like crazy! You can't just forget 25 years like this. I thank everyone, even if this is not easy for me. I spoke to my wife about what these years have been like.
"I thank my mother and father, my brother, family and friends. Thank you to my wife and three children. I wanted to start from this, because I wasn't sure if I'd be able to get to the end of it."

Celtic transfer latest as Viktor Eriksson ‘pursuit' gets emphatic response and Ambrosino loan 'considered'

Brendan Rodgers is desperate to bolster his squad ahead of the coming season Serie A newboys Cremonese are reportedly weighing up a loan bid for Celtic target Giuseppe Ambrosino. ‌ The Italy U21 international has returned to parent club Napoli after a loan spell in Serie B with Frosinone last year but faces an uphill battle to force his way into the Scudetto winners' manager Antonio Conte's plans. ‌ Ambrosino was touted as a potential target for Brendan Rodgers last month, with the Irishman still on the hunt for attacking reinforcements ahead of the new season, with their huge Champions League qualification play-off now just weeks away. ‌ However, Cremonese have also been credited with an interest in the 21-year-old, and Il Giorno now claim that they are considering a loan swoop for the attacker. The report adds that the Cremona side are hopeful that their good relations with Napoli will allow them to seal a loan deal for the youngster. Meanwhile, Celtic have been told that Hammarby defender Viktor Eriksson is not for sale amid reports that the Hoops had sent scouts to watch the Swede in action. Parkhead Head of Football Operations Paul Tisdale is said to have taken in Hammarby's 2-1 away victory against Belgian outfit Charleroi on Thursday that booked their place in the third qualifying round of the Conference League, with Erilksson himself bagging the all-important winner in the final minute of extra time. Hammarby boss Kim Hellberg is unaware of any interest from Celts but insists that the centre back isn't going anywhere. ‌ Asked about the player's future after their win against Charleroi, he replied: "He's not for sale. "He has played every minute of these last four games. It is a very big moment for me too. "I have worked with him for four years in Varnamo, in Hammarby now. I have seen how hard he has worked, and developed as a person and a player. I am so, so proud of him." ‌ You can get all the news you need on our dedicated Celtic page and sign up to our newsletters to make sure you never miss a beat throughout the season. Lando Norris says what he won't do to beat McLaren team-mate Oscar Piastri to F1 title

McLaren look certain to win both Formula 1 championships this year with the teams' title all-but sewn up and Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri duelling for individual glory Lando Norris is desperate for Formula 1 glory – but insists he is not willing to do anything to win. History is littered with World champions like Michael Schumacher and Ayrton Senna who were not afraid to bend rules in the pursuit of success. ‌ Title-chasing McLaren duo Norris and Oscar Piastri have kept it clean so far this year, apart from a collision in Canada for which the Brit immediately accepted fault. Norris is often self-critical when he makes mistakes and that, he says, proves how much he wants to win. ‌ But he said: "I get upset sometimes and I get disappointed and I get angry at myself, and I think that shows just how much I care about winning and losing. But that doesn't mean I need to take it out on Oscar. I just don't get into those kind of things. ‌ "He is the guy I want to beat more than anyone else but, if I don't beat him, then that's just because he has done a better job. I will do it the way I believe is best for me, and just because one person did it a few years ago, it doesn't mean you have to do that too." Norris was quicker than Piastri in both practice sessions at the Hungaroring on Friday as McLaren dominated proceedings. Ferrari showed decent pace with Charles Leclerc third in both hours while Lewis Hamilton also looked strong on a track where he has won eight times before. In contrast, Max Verstappen struggled for pace and was only 14th on the timesheets by the end of FP2. Yuki Tsunoda was ninth, marking the first time the Dutchman has been beaten by a Red Bull team-mate in any practice session this season. Verstappen spent much of that second hour of running complaining about his machine. "I don't know what's going on, I can't get any balance," he complained at one point, while also stating in other radio messages that the car was "undriveable" and that it was "like driving on ice". ‌ He is third in the drivers' championship but 81 points adrift of leader Piastri. That would be a huge gap to overhaul but, still McLaren team principal Andrea Stella is refusing to rule the four-time World champion out of the fight. The Italian said: "I only agree with mathematics, so once mathematics tells us that is the case, then I will change my answer. I would not exclude Max, for instance, being in the game, so we are very wary. We remain concentrated, but we want to put our drivers in a position to sustain their quest until the end of the season." Fernando Alonso missed the first practice session of the day, citing back pain, with Brazilian reserve driver Felipe Drugovich filling in. But the Spaniard, 44, was well enough to drive in FP2 and was fifth fastest, one place behind Lance Stroll as Aston Martin showed encouraging pace.
