The promised Galaxy S26 battery boost could turn out to be an epic fail
The list of things that could surprise me gets shorter by the day. It could be because we're living in 2025 – what the ancient Chinese would call "interesting times", or it could be just me. But, my stoicism gets challenged big time (once again) by Samsung and the decisions the company makes for their upcoming flagship Galaxy I wasn't surprised when I learned about these two prospects:After all, it's not like we've anticipated anything different from Sammy for the foreseeable future, judging by the recent past – none of the Galaxy flagships (foldable or not) deliver big mAh (battery capacity) numbers. At least not when compared to Xiaomi, OnePlus phones, for out of the blue, this report surfaced: Is Samsung finally cracking the code on Galaxy S26 battery woes? My hopes took off, only to crash shortly after. And what seems like a potential win, I see as a missed opportunity. Will Samsung go after a wasp waist again? | Image credit – PhoneArena OK, so: for the Galaxy S26, Samsung could team up with South Korea's ITM Semiconductor to improve battery life and make the batteries more goal is to create batteries that last longer and can potentially charge faster, thanks to new protective technology. ITM is said to be developing special battery protection circuits using something called epoxy molding compound (EMC), which helps control how the battery charges and technology adds a protective layer to block moisture, reduce interference from other parts inside the phone, and help keep the battery cool – all of which are key to preventing battery wear and heat is one of the biggest factors that shortens battery life, this new approach could make a difference, especially during heavy use like gaming or fast charging. The improved circuits are also getting smaller, which could free up space inside the phone and allow Samsung to fit in a larger battery. However, the report doesn't mention anything about the Galaxy S26 getting a larger capacity battery in addition to the EMC tech. And, not to play Cassandra here, but I think I know what's going to happen: Samsung will be extremely tempted to slim down the Galaxy S26 and if the EMC tech allows it, they'll do it. The way I see it, the Galaxy S26 will get the same ~3,900mAh capacity battery (from the Galaxy S25), but it will be presented as a major tech breakthrough ("See, we're innovating!") and a slim profile thanks to the EMC tech. I don't know if Samsung knows this, but people are not that crazy about super thin phones: Samsung Galaxy S25 Edge has a major problem: it does not sell Or, at least, they're not that crazy about the S25 Edge in particular. We'll see how the iPhone 17 Air performs, but I think we can all see where the iPhone 17 Air is headed, as my colleague Abdullah put it elegantly not so long ago. The Galaxy S25. | Image credit – PhoneArena Instead, what Samsung should do is not obsess with wasp waists, embrace a larger battery and then apply the EMC tech, potentially surpassing its rivals, if the new technology turns out to be that effective. Even if that doesn't allow for the Galaxy S26 to be slimmed down, I think Samsung should bite the bullet and just go with it. Think about it: would you have a marginally thinner phone with a mediocre battery cell, or a standard-sized chassis that houses a superior battery? The good news is that if you're on Team A, there's the Galaxy S25 Edge for you: it's thin, it's sleek, it's all about looks. Also, Samsung needs to hop on the silicon-carbon bandwagon as soon as possible. Such batteries can hold more charge in the same physical space, giving phones higher capacity without making them larger or heavier. Devices like the OnePlus 13 (6,000 mAh) already use this battery technology, offering higher mAh ratings while keeping a slim, compact design. As battery technology continues to advance, even bigger capacities are expected, with early rumors suggesting that the yet-to-be-announced OnePlus 15 could feature a 7,000mAh battery. The Galaxy S25 Ultra successor might not come with upgrades. | Image credit – PhoneArena As I mentioned above, the situation with the Galaxy S26 Ultra ("the best of the best" by Samsung) and the Galaxy Z Fold 7 (the maxed-out innovative foldable) also seems to be in dire Ultra flagship will apparently inherit the 5,000 mAh battery from its predecessors. That's the exact same capacity that Samsung has been putting in its Ultra flagships for six consecutive years, starting with the Galaxy S20 Ultra. Now, chipsets get more power efficient, there are software optimizations on board and, let's be frank about it, five thousand mAh of capacity is nothing to whine about. But a company needs to check itself against what happens to your reputation, if you were able to put a 5,000 mAh capacity battery cell in your flagship in 2020, but can't seem to up that number in 2026? That's a shame. The iPhone 16 Pro Max successor might get things right. | Image credit – PhoneArena Hold on to your hats, because we have something at our hands that is nothing short of a pure miracle: Apple (of all companies) might also embrace the big mAh numbers for its next flagship: It's not the whole iPhone 17 line that's apparently going to get its mAh numbers boosted – just the iPhone 17 Pro Max. Allegedly, the biggest and baddest iPhone of 2025 could sport a 5,000 mAh cell. On its own, that's nothing special, you'd think, but given Apple's software optimizations, that could very well mean the battery life could be great on this expensive phone. The Nothing Phone (3). | Image credit – PhoneArena The Nothing Phone (3) – the first flagship by Carl Pei's industry disruptor company – also steps in the 5,000 mAh+ territory. The cool-looking Phone (3) packs a 5,150 mAh cell with 65W charging speeds that will get you from 0% to 50% in less than 20 minutes. What's more, its cell is a silicon-carbon one, which leaves Samsung, a company with – I dare to say – a slightly bigger budget, practically without excuses. So, the Galaxy S26 is still (more than) half a year ahead in time. Let's hope some positive rumors appear in the months to come – as they say, hope springs eternal in the human breast. New flip foldable promises better specs than Galaxy Z Flip 7
With Samsung's new foldables, Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Galaxy Z Flip 7, just around the corner, it's time to take a glance at what's coming in the next few months that could successfully compete with the South Korean foldables. Honor's Magic V5 is already a better foldable on paper than the Galaxy Z Fold 7, but its main disadvantage is that it won't be available worldwide before Samsung's foldable. Not to mention that Honor's devices aren't available for purchase in the United States, at least not through official channels. But Magic V5 is not the only Honor foldable that will compete with one of Samsung's upcoming devices. Magic V Flip 2 will directly compete with the Galaxy Z Flip 7, but not until later this summer. The sequel to the Magic V Flip has some interesting specs, at least according to a fresh new report. Reliable leaker Digital Chat Station claims the upcoming Magic V Flip 2 sports a large 6.8-inch LTPO folding OLED display with FHD+ resolution, and a 4-inch LTPO cover OLED display with FHD+ resolution. These are the exact same specs as the Magic V Flip, which means Honor hasn't been able to make any technological advancements when it comes to display. In comparison, Samsung's Galaxy Z Flip 7 is expected to boast a 6.85-inch LTPO folding AMOLED display with 1080 x 2640 pixels resolution, and a 4-inch Super AMOLED cover display. Honor Magic V Flip is confined to Chinese market | Image credit: Honor Unfortunately, Honor will not use a flagship chipset for the Magic V Flip 2. Although the flip foldable will be powered by a Snapdragon 8 series chipset, it's not going to be the Elite or Elite 2 flagships. In a previous post on Weibo from February 2025, Digital Chat Station said the Magic V Flip 2 could be equipped with a previous-gen Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. On the bright side, Honor's foldable is rumored to pack a much bigger 5,500 mAh battery with support for 66W or 80W wired charging speeds. For reference, the original Magic V Flip packs a 4,800 mAh battery, while the Galaxy Z Flip 7 still uses a 4,000 mAh battery, the same that powers the previous model. As far as the camera goes, Digital Chat Station says the Magic V Flip 2 has a dual camera setup, which will include a 50-megapixel main camera with a 1/1.5-inch sensor. There's no information about the second camera but considering that the original model also comes with a dual camera system (50MP main + 12MP ultra-wide), there's a high chance that Magic V Flip 2 will use the same also worth mentioning that the Magic V Flip comes with a 50-megapixel selfie snapper, which Honor might use inside the sequel too. This is an enormous difference in comparison with Galaxy Z Flip 7 's rumored 10-megapixel front camera, but it remains to be seen if this will be reflected in the quality of the pictures captured too. There's one last piece of information that Digital Chat Station leaked on Weibo and that's Honor V Flip 2's release timeframe. According to the Chinese tipster, Honor's next flip foldable is expected to be introduced in China sometime in August. If the info proves to be accurate, a global launch might happen in September. Honor typically uses IFA, one of the world's leading trade shows for consumer electronics, to make important announcements, and the global release of its Magic V Flip 2 fits the company's marketing strategy perfectly. It would be unrealistic to talk about pricing options considering that the Magic V Flip wasn't officially launched outside of China. But for the sake of comparison, it's worth noting that the Magic V Flip was priced to sell for 5,000 yuan at launch, which translates to about $695 / €590. We expect the Magic V Flip 2 to cost around the same in China, but if Honor decides to launch it worldwide, prices will be slightly higher by roughly $100 / €100 (?). In iOS 26 a new feature will stop spam texts and those from unknown senders from reaching you
Tired of receiving those spam texts asking you to pay for a toll you supposedly owe? Other spam texts can be just as annoying. How many messages have you received supposedly sent from the U.S. Postal Service about a package that couldn't be delivered because there wasn't enough postage paid? One of the hallmarks of a successful spam campaign is a message that forces you to react emotionally instead of logically. One example would be a text claiming to be from your bank that says it is processing a withdrawal for a large amount of money. Right away, you worry that someone was able to infiltrate your bank account so you respond to the text by revealing personal information, and find that you've put yourself in even more financial jeopardy. The Apple Messages app is the recipient of a new feature in iOS 26 that will help you avoid becoming the victim of unwanted spam and scam texts. On iOS 26 (and right now with the iOS 26 Developer Beta), tap the blue button in the upper right corner of the Messages app and press the Manage Filtering option to open a new menu. When that menu opens you probably should toggle on "Screen Unknown Senders" and "Filter Spam." Toggling on "Screen Unknown Senders" hides notifications about texts sent from a sender you don't know and moves such messages to the Unknown Senders list. In a little bit, I will tell you how to access that list. The Filter Spam hides notifications related to texts considered to be spam and moves such messages to the Spam list. Apple Messages will filter spam and texts from unknown senders in iOS 26. | Image credit-PhoneArena Even though you won't see notifications about texts received from unknown senders and texts considered to be spam in your main conversations page, these texts can be accessed from individual Unknown Senders and Spam lists. To see those lists, open the Messages app and tap the blue button in the top right-corner. You will see a small menu pop up. To view messages from "Unknown Senders," press on that listing. You will see all of the texts you received from unknown senders that were hidden by the system. Do the same for "Spam" to see a list of texts considered spam that were placed in the individual Spam list. Tapping the blue button in the upper-right corner will allow you to access four different and individual lists containing: Messages Unknown Senders Spam Recently Deleted messages Again, this is a feature that most of you will receive with the iOS 26 release in September.
