Jannik Sinner breaks strict diet due to Wimbledon rival Carlos Alcaraz

Jannik Sinner was beaten in the French Open final by Carlos Alcaraz and his coach Darren Cahill has admitted how the Italian reacted to the defeat
Jannik Sinner's coach, Darren Cahill, has shared how the tennis star dealt with a gut-wrenching defeat at the French Open final. After a nail-biting five-setter in which Sinner surrendered a two-set lead and three championship points to Carlos Alcaraz, the Italian reacted by breaking his diet.
Sinner had won back-to-back majors at the US Open and Australian Open ahead of last month's French Open final. Having come agonisinly close to clinching a third consecutive Grand Slam, there were fears that the Paris defeat to two-time Wimbledon champion Alcaraz could impact Sinner's fortunes at the Grand Slam.

Sinner swept those concerns aside as he kicked off with a win against fellow Italian Luca Nardi at SW19 on Tuesday. However, Cahill did admit that Sinner dealt with his French Open heartache by breaking his diet after being seen exiting Roland Garros with a jar of sweets in hand.

In an interview with ESPN, as reported by Tennis Tonic, Cahill said: "I must say, about half an hour afterwards, he went and did the press," he began. "We were walking to transport. We had this big bus where we all sit in and for the players they have this candy jar that you can take a couple of candies [from] as you walk out of Roland Garros. He took the whole jar!
"He grabbed the glass jar, had the candies, he'd been on a strict diet for two weeks and that was it. The diet was out the window.
"In the car, he was handing candies out to everyone," said Cahill. "He was laughing, he was giggling. He moved on pretty quickly and it'll be interesting to see how he moves on here because this will be the big test."
Following the painful defeat in Paris, Cahill is optimistic that the world No. 1 has arrived at Wimbledon in top form. Having previously reached the semi-finals, Cahill believes that Sinner is still improving his grass court game.
"He's had his best week of practice on grass that he's ever had. He's rejuvenated, he's fresh, mentally he looks good," Cahill continued. 'The first couple of matches will be interesting.

"He has to get his teeth into the tournament, but if he can get through the first couple of matches, he'll be completely fine. '.
While other players may have struggled to come to terms with Sinner's defeat in the French Open, his coach explained why the 23-year-old was quickly able to focus on the next challenge. 'He knows he's got 10 or 12 years at the top of the game if he continues to work the way he's working," Cahill said.
"He knows he's going to have a lot more chances against Carlos Alcaraz in finals. They'll play a lot of big matches and he'll get his wins.

"The fact also that, had he won that tournament, we'd be competing here for the Sinner slam. He would have had three in a row. So he knows he's around the mark, he's improving all the time on grass."
Having spoken ahead of the Italian's opening match, Sinner lived up to his coach's expectations, smoothly sailing into the second round and setting up a clash with Aleksandar Vukic. After dispatching Nardi and moving forward in the tournament, the young star displayed his positive mindset.
"It's a new tournament with new chances and new challenges. I will try to keep going and enjoy playing here," Sinner said in a press conference. "If you don't enjoy playing on these courts, I don't know where you will enjoy. I'm very happy to be here, so let's see what is coming."

Emma Raducanu crashes out in straight sets in Montreal

Raducanu had won both of their previous meetings, but rarely looked like extending that run as she held her serve just once in either set. Wimbledon finalist Anisimova came from 40-15 down to break Raducanu's serve in the second game of the match and, although the British number one broke back immediately, she was unable to fashion another break point in the contest. Anisimova broke again to make it 3-1 and added a third break to wrap up the set. Her dominance continued in the second set as Raducanu won just eight points on her own serve, avoiding the whitewash after losing the first five games before Anisimova served out for a place in the fourth round. She will face 10th seed Elina Svitolina or Anna Kalinskaya in the last 16. Wimbledon champion Iga Swiatek needed little more than an hour to complete a 6-2 6-2 victory over Germany's Eva Lys, but Jessica Pegula's bid for a third straight Montreal title was ended by world number 386 Anastasija Sevastova. The Latvian, a former world number 11 who has had lengthy spells out on maternity leave and with a torn ACL, beat the third seed 3-6 6-4 6-1.

Dele Alli considers retiring at 29 after ex-Spurs and England star snubbed by Cesc Fabregas

Dele Alli's football career has been on a downward spiral since leaving Tottenham in 2021 after struggling to rediscover his best form at Everton and his future now looks uncertain having been excluded from Cesc Fabregas' plans at Como Former Tottenham star Dele Alli is reportedly considering retirement at the age of just 29 after being told he is not Como's plans under Cesc Fabregas this season. ‌ Alli has endured a nightmare spell since leaving Tottenham for Everton in 2021 after struggling to find his best form at Goodison Park before a disastrous loan at Turkish side Besiktas in 2022-23. ‌ Everton allowed him to train with the first team during the 2023-24 season but he failed to stay fit and avoid injuries and eventually left in 2024 before Como and Fabregas took a chance on him at the start of the year. ‌ But his luckless run in football continued after he was sent off on his Como debut, just ten minutes after coming on as a substitute following a rash challenge on Ruben Loftus-Cheek. Alli hasn't played for the club since and he has now been "banished" from Fabregas' plans for the new 2025-26 Serie A season, according to Gazetta dello Sport, and the England international is now thinking about hanging up his boots. The Italian outlet has detailed how Alli has been training away from the first team group and is now weighing up his next move, with few options on the table for the former wonderkid. Premier League fans will remember being wowed by Alli during seven years at Tottenham, where he once scored 18 Premier League goals in the 2016-17 season as Spurs finished second in the league. Tottenham's All or Nothing documentary on Amazon in the 2019-20 season shed a light on Alli's struggles behind the scenes, however, as former boss Jose Mourinho was filmed criticising his work ethic in training before telling the player he will "regret" not realising his true potential. ‌ Alli later gave a heartbreaking interview with Gary Neville in 2023 following his exit from Spurs, revealing his trauma as a child, including how he was sexually abused as a child. He said he struggled with his mental health throughout his career and had spent time in rehab following the end of his Besiktas loan due to an addiction to sleeping pills. During the interview, Alli said he had contemplated retiring at 24 when Mourinho was the manager after losing his hunger as a top level footballer. "One morning I woke up and I had to go to training - this is when he'd stopped playing me - and I was in a bad place. I was literally staring in the mirror and I was asking if I could retire now, at 24, doing the thing I love. That was heartbreaking." Defending champion Pegula sent packing by Sevastova at Canadian Open, Swiatek through

Aug 2 (Reuters) - Twice defending champion Jessica Pegula crashed out of the Canadian Open after losing to Anastasija Sevastova 3-6 6-4 6-1 in the third round on Friday, while six-times major winner Iga Swiatek marched on with a dominant 6-2 6-2 win over Eva Lys. The 35-year-old Sevastova, ranked 386 in the world, will next face four-times Grand Slam champion Naomi Osaka, who took out Latvian 22nd seed Jelena Ostapenko 6-2 6-4. "I don't know," Sevastova said after upsetting third seed Pegula. "Somehow, I was down 2-0 in the second set and started to play better and better. Third set, I played really good. Just trying to stay on the court as long as possible." Wimbledon runner-up Amanda Anisimova, seeded fifth in Montreal, carved out a comfortable win over Emma Raducanu, beating the 2021 U.S. Open champion 6-2 6-1. Anisimova's win over Raducanu is her first, having lost their previous two encounters. She will next face Ukrainian 10th seed Elina Svitolina. In the men's draw, American second seed Taylor Fritz made light work of local hope Gabriel Diallo, beating the 27th seed 6-4 6-2. Fritz, who is eyeing a third title of the season after triumphs in Eastbourne and Stuttgart, will next take on Czech 19th seed Jiri Lehecka. "Even the games that I didn't serve my best in, I felt like I backed it up really well from the baseline, so I'm happy with that," Fritz said. American fourth seed Ben Shelton, however, was made to work hard by countryman Brandon Nakashima before managing a 6-7(8) 6-2 7-6(5) win. "It was back and forth," Shelton said. "There were a lot of huge moments, like being able to break back after getting broken in my first service game of the third set. I feel like I showed a lot of perseverance tonight." Next up for Shelton is Italian 13th seed Flavio Cobolli.
