HMSI and Hyderabad police hold summer camp to teach road safety to children

Over 750 students took part in a six-day summer camp organised by
Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India
(
HMSI
) in partnership with the Hyderabad Traffic Police. The camp was held at the Hyderabad Traffic Training Park and focused on teaching children aged 10 to 15 about
road safety
.
Participants were introduced to basic traffic rules, pedestrian awareness and road etiquette through hands-on sessions and real-time simulations. The camp also included a range of activities such as self-defence, painting, music, dance, handwriting improvement, cartooning and personality development.
Long-term vision of safer roads
This initiative is part of HMSI's wider effort to support the Government of India's target of reducing road accident deaths by 50% by 2030. The programme also aligns with Honda's global goal of achieving zero traffic fatalities by 2050.
HMSI has carried out road safety training across 10 adopted Traffic Training Parks and six Safety Driving Education Centres in India. According to the company, over 97 lakh individuals have been educated on safe road practices through these initiatives.
Key elements of training include:
Theory sessions on traffic rules, road signs, riding posture and safety gearUse of virtual simulators to replicate over 100 road hazard scenariosKiken Yosoku Training (KYT) to build risk awareness and hazard predictionSkill-building exercises such as slow riding and narrow plank riding
To broaden access, HMSI has launched E-Gurukul, a digital platform offering road safety content for children aged 5 to 18 in multiple Indian languages. Schools can access the platform at E-Gurukul website or contact the team via email.

CHENNAI: Four months after Renault Group announced its intent to buy out Nissan's 51% stake in joint India plant RNAIPL (Renault Nissan Automotive India Private Ltd), the French auto major has completed the acquisition and become sole owner of the Oragadam/Chennai facility. 'India is a key market for Renault Group and also plays a vital role in our global R&D footprint. With full ownership of our plant in Chennai, we now have all the means to accelerate in India,' said François Provost, CEO of Renault Group. The acquisition is part of Renault Group 'accelerating its development in India' said the company in a statement. Renault Group has just named Stephane Deblaise as its CEO for India effective Sept 1, 2025 to lead the next phase of the French auto major's India strategy. Since its launch in 2010, the Chennai plant has produced more than 2.8 million vehicles — including 1.2 million exported to more than 100 countries — as well as 4.6 million engines and gearboxes. Supported by nearly 300 local suppliers, the plant has an annual production capacity of more than 400,000 vehicles; it is currently using nearly 50% capacity. Currently dedicated to the CMF-A and CMF-A+ platforms, the Oragadam plant is preparing to host the group's new multi-energy modular platform, which will 'support the Renault brand's future models,' said the statement. The group is bullish on the local market's importance in its global strategy. 'Renault Group looks to India as a key driver of international expansion,' said the statement. Volvo Cars will continue to introduce both electric and internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles in India, pivoting its earlier strategy of going all-electric amid slow customer adoption of battery electric vehicles (BEVs). The Swedish luxury carmaker had last year said it will henceforth sell only electric vehicles in India in its bid to have an all-electric portfolio by the turn of the decade. 'We will continue to drive in electric cars and have a launch lined up later this year itself. But at the same time, we will continue to focus on ICE,' said Malhotra. Live Events EVs currently contribute about 25% of Volvo's sales in India. The market for such eco-friendly luxury cars is however still small though it is growing, according to the company. 'About a year back, EVs had started losing steam. We are seeing some uptick in the segment in the last six months. But customer needs are different across regions,' said Malhotra. 'Home charging is extremely important for customer comfort when it comes to owning EVs. In cities, where there are high-rises, charging electric cars is challenging,' he said, adding Volvo is seeing stronger EV adoption in states like Kerala, Maharashtra, and Delhi where there are low-rises and state policies are conducive. He was speaking on the sidelines of the launch of the XC60 SUV model. Globally, Volvo does have plug-in hybrids in its portfolio, but Malhotra said the company will only consider launching them in India if the tax structures are more conducive. India currently levies a Goods and Services Tax (GST) rate of 5% on EVs, and 43% on hybrids. Overall, Malhotra said luxury car sales in India, which had been outpacing the broader car market in the last few years, slowed in the first half of 2025 as volatile stock markets, and mounting geopolitical tensions hit demand among the country's rich, aspirational buyers. He however added that Volvo is on track to meet its sales target for this calendar year though industry growth is likely to be muted. Per industry estimates, around 22,900 luxury cars were sold in the first half of 2025, a 1.8% rise from a year earlier. Separately, Malhotra termed free trade agreements being inked or negotiated by the Indian government as a step in the right direction, which will help to grow the auto industry in the long run. 'The UK FTA has set a benchmark. While the one with the EU is still some time away, free trade agreements are good for the economy. India is seen as a market with growth potential. If any company were to invest in India today, they will only consider the scale available in the market here. With FTAs, the scale changes immediately as they open up access to many more markets globally,' he said, adding Volvo can also explore possibilities for expanding its footprint in India once the EU trade deal is finalised.

Tesla to inaugurate first India supercharging station in Mumbai next week

American electric car maker Tesla on Friday said it will launch its first charging station in Mumbai next week. The company, which had announced its much-awaited entry into the Indian market last month, said the first Tesla Charging Station in India will feature four V4 Supercharging Stalls (DC charging) and four Destination charging Stalls (AC charging). The Tesla Supercharging Stalls offer a peak charging speed of 250 kW starting at Rs 24/kW and destination chargers providing 11kW at Rs 14/kW, it said in a statement. "This will be the first of the eight Supercharging sites that were announced during the launch in Mumbai, with more planned across the country, to provide the optimal cross-country experience," the company added. Last month, Tesla launched its Model Y with price starting at Rs 59.89 lakh while opening its first experience centre at the Maker Maxity Commercial Complex, in Bandra Kurla Complex, Mumbai. Tesla said the "Model Y can add up to 267 kilometres of range in just 15 minutes with Tesla Superchargers, enough for 5 return trips between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai and Gateway of India". The company said it will be providing a free wall connector with purchase of a new Tesla to be installed in customers' residences.
