The Developing World's G-7 Would Like a Word

It likes to think of itself as the developing world's equivalent of the Group of Seven. Yet unlike the G-7, the BRICS bloc — designed for Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, but now expanded to 11 members — has sharply diverging interests. It includes energy exporters like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, as well as importers like India; material-hungry manufacturing giants like China, and commodity superpowers like Brazil; moderate democracies like Indonesia, and extremist theocracies like Iran. If there's one thing that almost all of them have in common, however, it's that they want to ensure the grouping's most powerful member, China, doesn't dominate. Beijing might want to use its influence over global trade to increase the use of the yuan; but India has made it clear that replacing the US dollar as the global reserve currency isn't part of the BRICS' mandate. Some of the newer members, such as the UAE, are close US allies.

Brazilian club Botafogo hires son of Carlo Ancelotti as its manager

RIO DE JANEIRO — Brazilian club Botafogo has hired the son of Brazil coach Carlo Ancelotti as its new manager. The 35-year-old Davide Ancelotti was handed a contract through 2026 to take up his first full-time coaching job after Botafogo owner John Textor fired Renato Paiva following the team's round-of-16 elimination at the Club World Cup. The Italian has worked for more than a decade alongside his father in different roles at Bayern Munich, Napoli, Everton, and Real Madrid. He is also part of Ancelotti's staff at Brazil. Botafogo is the defending Brazilian and Copa Libertadores champion. Textor recently said he wanted his team to adopt a more attacking style of play. Brazil's soccer confederation said in a statement that Davide Ancelotti's deal with Botafogo allows him to continue working with the national team ahead of the 2026 World Cup. The younger Ancelotti is expected to make his debut on Saturday against Vasco da Gama in a Brazilian league match. ___ AP soccer:
