Hyundai tests hydrogen bus in NEOM mountains to advance zero-emission mobility

Hyundai Motor Group said it has completed a hydrogen mobility trial in Trojena, a mountainous region of Saudi Arabia's $500 billion NEOM development, marking the first deployment of hydrogen-powered vehicles in high-altitude terrain.
The trial, conducted in partnership with Enowa, NEOM's energy and water subsidiary, involved operating Hyundai's UNIVERSE fuel cell electric coach bus on routes reaching elevations of 2,080 meters and gradients of 24 per cent. The vehicle simulated passenger transport between NEOM's future core business district and Trojena.
The tests follow a memorandum of understanding signed in September 2024 between Hyundai Motor Group and NEOM's Mobility sector to develop next-generation zero-emission mobility solutions.
Enowa recently installed the region's first hydrogen refuelling station, which supported Hyundai's use of the UNIVERSE Fuel Cell bus for VIP transport in NEOM from October to December 2024.
The Group's involvement in hydrogen initiatives in Saudi Arabia builds on development work that began in the late 1990s.
The trial aligns with Saudi Vision 2030 and its hydrogen-focused HTWO platform, which covers hydrogen production, storage and applications.

Saudi Arabia's ADES to acquire Norway's Shelf Drilling in $380 million deal

Saudi-based oil and gas drilling company ADES International Holding has agreed to acquire Norway's Shelf Drilling in a $380 million all-cash deal, strengthening its position in the global offshore drilling market, according to a report by Reuters. The deal, valued at $379 million, offers Shelf Drilling shareholders $1.36 per share, representing a 62 per cent premium over the stock's last closing price on the Oslo Stock Exchange. Shelf's board has recommended the offer, the companies told Reuters in a joint statement. Once finalised, the merger will create a combined fleet of 83 offshore jack-up drilling rigs, solidifying ADES's role as a global leader in shallow-water drilling services. 'With this landmark transaction, we reinforce our position as a market leader in shallow-water offshore drilling,' said ADES CEO Mohamed Farouk, as quoted in the joint statement. The transaction is expected to close in Q4 2025, subject to shareholder approval at an extraordinary general meeting and other regulatory conditions. This acquisition is the latest in a string of moves by ADES to expand internationally and bolster its service offerings to the global oil and gas industry.

ACWA Power says 25 projects worth $26bln in advanced development stage

ACWA Power has 25 projects in the advanced development stage, which are valued at $25.76 billion as of 30 June 2025, according to its second quarter 2025 financial statement. The total contracted power and water capacity stands at 22,008 megawatts (MW) and 1,824 cubic metres per day (m3/day). Total assets under construction and partially operational reached $26.18 billion, with a total contracted power and water capacity of 22,455 MW and 1,451 m3/day. Operational capacity reached 2,860 MW, while under-construction capacity stands at 19,595 MW and 14,51 m3/day. Total operations assets stand at 57, valued at $55.52 billion, with operational power and water capacity at 34,429 MW and 6,194 m3/day as of 30 June 2025. ACWA Power financially closed two projects with an aggregate total investment cost of around 2.4 billion Saudi riyals by the end of June 2025. The company's gross power capacity reached 78.9 GW, 9.5 million m3/day, 1.2 million tonnes per annum of green ammonia, and 5.3 GWh of battery energy storage system (BESS). Assets under management totalled SAR403 billion by the end of June 2025. Green Hydrogen NEOM Green Hydrogen is expected to come online in the fourth quarter of 2026 with a capacity of 220 Ktonnes per annum, the statement said. The company has also commenced design work on a new green hydrogen project in the Kingdom. In August, ACWA Power awarded a convertible front-end engineering design (FEED) contract for the Yanbu Green Hydrogen Project to a consortium of Spain's Tecnicas Reunidas and China's Sinopec Guangzhou Engineering. The multibillion facility, which is scheduled to start commercial operations by 2030, will utilise 5 gigawatts (GW) each of wind and solar power, coupled with a 400 km transmission line and up to 4.4 GW of electrolysers to annually produce 400,000 tonnes of green hydrogen, which will be converted to 2.5 million tonnes of green ammonia to facilitate its export to international markets. In February, ACWA Power and Germany's SEFE signed an agreement to explore building a hydrogen bridge between Saudi Arabia and Germany, starting with the supply of 200,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030. In May, the company signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Malaysian Investment Development Authority (MIDA) to develop energy projects, including green hydrogen, targeting 12.5 GW of capacity by 2040 through an estimated investment of $10 billion. SABIC's Fujian complex, Petrokemya MTBE plant 'progressing on budget'

Saudi Basic Industries Corporation's (SABIC) Fujian complex in China and the Petrokemya MTBE plant are "progressing on budget", CEO Abdulrahman Al-Fageeh said in the financial statement for the second quarter 2025. The work on the projects is ongoing as per the planned schedule, he added. The construction of the Fujian complex commenced in February 2024, which is expected to be completed in 2026. The complex will generate a production value of 30 billion renminbi ($4.3 billion) per year in operations and over RMB 100 billion of upstream and downstream investments. The company's new MTBE plant at Petrokemya, Jubail, is the single largest MTBE production plant in the world, with nameplate capacity increasing to 1,000 kilotonnes per annum. Al-Fageeh said the company has advanced its digital transformation journey, deploying over 490 artificial intelligence (AI) models across manufacturing operations to enhance energy efficiency, planning, and emissions performance. The cost optimisation initiatives were launched in the first quarter of 2025 as part of SABIC's broader transformation programme. 'The program aims to deliver, by 2030, a recurring annual EBITDA impact of $3 billion from a combination of cost excellence and value creation,' the CEO said. SABIC maintains a full-year expenditure guidance in the range of $3 to $3.5 billion, Al-Fageeh said. The net cash position stands at 2.71 billion Saudi riyals as of 30 June 2025, compared to a net debt position of SAR 0.88 billion as of 31 March 2025. (Editing by Anoop Menon) (
