Key Twins trade deadline questions: Who's pulling strings and what direction can they take?
To discuss the deadline and set up a crucial week for the club, Twins beat writer Aaron Gleeman hosted a live Q&A with The Athletic subscribers on Monday afternoon. Here are some questions that were answered during the chat.
For more deadline coverage, read the full Q&A transcript, visit our Twins section for the latest stories, or check out our live blog for the latest all week long.
How much influence do you think the new ownership group WILL have over this deadline for decisions? — Spencer K.
Well, the trade deadline is this week and there's zero indication that a change in ownership is imminent. It's possible the overall uncertainty will affect decisions at the deadline, but in terms of new owners specifically having any influence … that would require new owners first.
Should they really trade more than their FA's? This team's individual talent is far better than the sum of its parts. New ownership and new management including a new coach has a chance to revitalize without tearing down. However, if that's not true, then they require a full 'tear it down to the studs' rebuild and that is a new ownership call. — Peter T.
At some point I think it's probably fair to wonder if the individual talent levels of core Twins players are overstated.

That was the reasoning behind the front office choosing to basically run it back after last season's collapse and … well, it hasn't gone any better with largely the same group. I don't think that's just bad luck.
If not now, Trevor Larnach has to be on the trading block before Opening Day next year right? He just seems like the odd man out in the corner outfield. — Jay V.
I've definitely included Larnach among players the Twins could potentially trade, because he's yet to take the step past average offensively and he's 28 year old with two seasons of team control remaining.
He looks like a slugger, and he occasionally hits like a slugger, but not nearly consistently enough on the way to a career .723 OPS.

If the Twins are fortunate enough to trade their six upcoming free agents and one of either Griffin Jax or Jhoan Duran how ugly is the baseball going to be in the last two months? Who would replace the four pitchers? Luke Keaschall, Austin Martin and Edouard Julien would be OK, but… — Todd W.
They are 19-29 since June 1 and 74-88 in their last 162 games. Ugly baseball has already arrived.
But yes, filling out the pitching staff could be a challenge if multiple veteran arms are traded. It's already sort of a challenge in the rotation.
For the same return, would you trade Jax or Duran?
Duran is three years younger and has performed at an elite level more consistently, so I'd certainly need more to trade him than Jax.
Who are some players at the Triple-A level you'd like to see get an extended run after the trade deadline to see if they can factor into the Twins' long-term plans? — Tony K.
Emmanuel Rodriguez and Andrew Morris are injured. I think we'll see Keaschall relatively soon, no matter what.
Martin and/or Julien should get another look if they aren't traded, but Jose Miranda has been the Saints' worst hitter and it's tough to argue he warrants another chance.
Pierson Ohl could be intriguing as a reliever tryout.

Brewers outfielder Jackson Chourio placed on injured list with strained right hamstring
WASHINGTON (AP) — The Milwaukee Brewers placed outfielder Jackson Chourio on the 10-day injured list Friday after evaluations of his strained right hamstring revealed more significant issues than expected. Chourio was injured Tuesday while running the bases on a triple in the fifth inning. The move to the IL was made retroactive to Wednesday. Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy said the 21-year-old Chourio will likely require more than a minimum stay on the injured list. 'It won't be anytime soon,' Murphy said before the Brewers' series opener against Washington. 'He was diagnosed a little more severely than we initially thought. To what extent, I'm not exactly sure. Nor are they. We're just going to have to rehab it.' Murphy said Chourio will receive a platelet-rich plasma injection. Chourio is hitting .276 with 17 homers, 67 RBIs and 18 steals for Milwaukee, which entered Friday with the best record in the majors at 64-44. He was replaced on the active roster by outfielder Brandon Lockridge, who the Brewers acquired Thursday from San Diego for pitcher Nestor Cortes, infielder Jorge Quintana and cash. Lockridge, who hit .216 with five RBIs in 47 games with the Padres this season, was inserted into the leadoff slot Friday against the Nationals. ___ AP MLB:

Leigh stun Warrington with dramatic late comeback
Betfred Super League Leigh (2) 20 Tries: Hanley 2, Trout Goals: O'Brien 4 Warrington (8) 16 Tries: Dufty, Jake Thewlis Goals: Sneyd 4 Leigh Leopards staged a stunning late fightback with two tries in three minutes to dent Warrington Wolves' Super League play-off hopes with a thrilling 20-16 home win. Wire bossed most of the game, and after Marc Sneyd and Gareth O'Brien successfully traded penalty kicks, the visitors led 8-2 at the break through Matt Dufty's try, laid on by a stunning run from Josh Thewlis. His younger sibling, Jake Thewlis, crossed five minutes after half-time to take Warrington 12 points clear before Umyla Hanley cut the deficit back to within a score. Sneyd's superb 46-metre penalty kick put Wolves 16-8 ahead with 10 minutes left, but Hanley crossed again before Owen Trout crashed over for the winning score with less than three minutes to go. Warrington remain four points outside the play-off places with seven rounds to go after a mystifying defeat. And a smash-and-grab fourth-straight win for Leigh - their seventh win from eight - moves them within a point of second-placed Wigan Warriors. Responding to a limp defeat at lowly Castleford Tigers last time out, Warrington showed aggression and energy from the get-go, pinning their hosts deep inside their own territory for much of the opening quarter. Yet despite their dominant play, steadfast Leigh defence limited them to just two points - Sneyd chipping over a penalty for Joe Ofahengaue's high tackle on Sam Powell, who had been held up on the line moments earlier. And having barely set an attacking boot in Wire territory, Leigh were soon level through O'Brien's penalty for late contact by Wire debutant Ryan Matterson. Yet, order was restored in the 32nd minute when Josh Thewlis, inside his own half on the right wing, cut back into the centre with a breathless run, slaloming through challenges before sending Dufty in under the posts. If there was hope for a below-par Leigh, and concern for Wire, it was that just one score separated the sides going into the second half. Sneyd slotted a second penalty before George Williams' superb kick down the left wing bounced kindly for Jake Thewlis to collect and cross for his eighth Super League try of the season. Leading 14-2 with 15 minutes left, Dufty had a second score - and a potential decider - overturned by the video referee following a Lachlan Fitzgibbon obstruction. And two minutes later, and having barely troubled the Warrington line, Leigh were back in it when Hanley stretched out to touch down O'Brien's deflected grubber kick. O'Brien's conversion brought the Leopards back within six points, but Sneyd's dead-eye penalty from long distance again took the visitors two scores clear. But once again after a Warrington score was ruled out after a video review - this time from Toby King - Hanley powered through for a second try and O'Brien's conversion cut the gap to 16-14. Wire were suddenly hanging on and buckled moments later as Trout capped his 100th Super League appearance with the winning score from close range.
