Lost Records: Fans and creators anticipate release of 'Rage'

BBC News15-04-2025

"What's in the box?"That's the question fans of Lost Records: Bloom & Rage have been asking since February, when the first part of the narrative adventure game dropped. The story follows a group of female friends, hopping between their lives as teenagers in the 1990s and as adults in the present. They are reunited by a mysterious package that threatens to expose a dark secret they've suppressed for 27 years.Part one, Bloom, was praised by fans for its characters and LGBT representation, even if it left them with an almighty cliffhanger to ponder. BBC Newsbeat caught up with creative director Michel Koch, executive producer Luc Baghadoust and lead actress Olivia Lepore to discuss the reaction to it, and what to expect from part two - Rage.
Lost Records is made by Don't Nod, the original developers of The Life is Strange series, first released in 2015.The episodic adventure's narrative unfolded depending on player choices, and was praised for its emotional depth. It was also unafraid to tackle difficult subjects rarely seen in video games at the time. Lost Records is seen as a spiritual successor and uses a similar, episodic structure, split across two "tapes".While the first was well-received by critics, a common criticism was its slow pacing, with a heavy focus on characters and relationships over big story moments.Michel admits that was "definitely a gamble".But he says the team wanted to recreate the feeling of a never-ending teenage summer, focusing on "those moments of enjoying doing nothing in a world where we are always pressurised to do something". "Just sometimes having the opportunity to enter a world where you can be peaceful and enjoy the mood, I think it's important," he says.
Lost Records features an all-female cast, LGBT themes and touches on social issues such as body image. That made it a target for what Luc and Michel call a "vocal minority" online who target releases they consider to be "woke"."We are in a weird time for that right now," says Michel."We are making games for people who want those kind of games."I think video games need to start to be more mature about that. "It's OK that there are a lot of different games and different genres and different audiences. "It doesn't mean that because something exists, it's a threat to the other things you like." Exec producer Luc admits the game is not for everyone but has so far had a "great reaction" from fans who've clicked with it."We made a game we would want to play," he says."It's a way to really express what you wanted to and reach a different audience."
'Expect the unexpected'
Lost Records has generated discussion around its portrayal of issues many teenagers deal with. When the game was first revealed there was a focus on the fact characters had visible acne scars - an unusual feature for a video game - and references throughout to Swann's struggles with her weight. Michel says the creators didn't want to make issues like this a main theme of the game."But it's still present, because in the '90s, there was still, of course, the peer pressure from the parents to, I don't know, just start a diet," he says. The main focus of tape one, Michel says, was having the characters find a group of close friends who would accept them for who they were."That's where you can start to accept yourself even more," he says. "Because they are the reflection of who you are and if they like you, it means that you are likeable and you can love yourself."
Olivia Lepore, who plays main character Swann Holloway, tells Newsbeat a lot of the game's themes - and her character's story - resonated with her."I think part of the reason I got this role is because we have so much in common," she says. "And I didn't feel like I had to put on a character playing her. I definitely just, in many ways, got to be myself."Olivia says that she's been blown away by the response from fans, who've identified with many of the themes and issues raised in the game."I have gotten some really beautiful messages from fans about how they feel like they connect with Swann," she says."I've been really touched by some of the messages to the point where it could be a bit overwhelming, because I just empathise so much with everybody's story."
As for the conclusion of the story, Olivia says "expect the unexpected"."Wherever you think it's going. It's probably not," she says.Michel says choices players made in part one will play out in the second, which is set to go to some darker places - and be much more dramatic."You can expect things to be, let's say, less happy and sunny and more gloomy than tape one."And we can't wait for you to open the box."

I'm still reeling after watching the horror film everyone's talking about

28 Years Later is a sequel to the popular 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later films, and has left viewers terrified, shocked and confused - all in equal measure. When 28 Days Later first hit the screens in 2002, I was just six years old - far too young to appreciate the intense, psychological pseudo-zombie horror filled with sprinting infected spewing blood and driven by the Rage Virus. However, as a teenager, I developed a fascination for the film and its less acclaimed sequel, 28 Weeks Later - which, in my view, boasts the best opening scene of any zombie film ever. ‌ So, you can imagine my thrill when I learnt that director Danny Boyle and writer Alex Garland were returning in 2025 with the third chapter of the franchise, 28 Years Later. This sequel deviates significantly from the previous films, and personally, I think this is a positive move. ‌ In the film, 28 years have elapsed since the Rage virus ravaged the UK. Mainland Britain has been quarantined, leaving those outside the island to grapple with the hordes of infected who range from the typical sprinting zombies made famous in the initial films to the swollen bloated infected who drag themselves across the forest floor surviving on worms. The introduction of these infected is utterly terrifying - the foley sound effect of these corpse-like creatures slurping down worms will echo in my mind for weeks. There's also another new type of infected - an Alpha. This monstrous zombie appears capable of critical thinking, making him a formidable foe for the main protagonists - father and son duo Jamie and Spike, portrayed by Aaron Taylor Johnson and Alfie Williams respectively, reports the Express. When Jamie guides Spike from their fortified village on Lindisfarne, across the tidal causeway to the mainland, Spike gets a rapid initiation into zombie hunting and scavenging. Echoing its predecessors, 28 Years Later is as much about family and society as it is about zombies. The plot thickens when Spike learns of a mysterious doctor on the mainland, portrayed by Ralph Fiennes, setting off an unparalleled hero's journey. ‌ In a desperate bid to find a cure for his mother Isla, brought to life by a brilliantly unhinged Jodie Comer, Spike leaves the safety of the village and his father's influence. He embarks on a perilous journey through the treacherous forest with his hallucinating mother, relentlessly chased by all three types of infected. The emotional bond between Spike and Isla was hidden in the film's promotional material, making its revelation a surprise that adds another layer of terror to the movie. Spike's commitment to finding a cure for his mother forms a central part of the storyline, ratcheting up the tension as the plot unfolds. In her lucid moments, Isla embodies the perfect mother - but she can also succumb to fits of rage and uncontrollable bleeding, eerily similar to the infected they are desperately trying to evade. The entire film is a thrilling ride, with the suspense barely easing off for a moment, culminating in the most unexpected and outlandish ending I've ever witnessed. Boyle and Gardener have already shot the next chapter of the series. 28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple is slated for release in January next year, and I'll be there in the cinema on opening day. In conclusion, 28 Years Later is a brilliant extension of the franchise, and it's one of those films that has you insisting all your mates see it too, just so you can collectively ask 'what on earth was that?'.

Katy Perry 'quietly told pals months ago' that Orlando Bloom romance was over

Popstar Katy Perry reportedly confided in close friends earlier this year that her relationship with Orlando Bloom was effectively over amid strain Katy Perry reportedly told close friends that her long-term relationship with fiancé Orlando Bloom was nearing its end back in January - after months of quiet struggle and emotional distance. According to a source close to the couple, the 40-year-old singer first opened up in January, privately admitting that things with Bloom, 48, had broken down. ‌ 'Katy confided in friends at the start of the year that their relationship was as good as done,' the insider revealed. 'They decided to hold off on announcing anything in case things improved between them, because they are desperate to stay together for the sake of their daughter.' ‌ The couple, who began dating in 2016 and got engaged three years later, share a four-year-old daughter, Daisy. But despite their efforts to keep the family unit together, demanding work schedules and physical distance have reportedly strained their bond. With Perry currently in Australia on her Lifetimes Tour and Bloom filming his new project Bucking Fastard in Dublin, their time together has been minimal this year. 'She knew that taking off her engagement ring would send a clear message,' the source told The Sun, hinting that the singer is emotionally preparing for the end. 'It's been a hard year so far. They wanted to wait until the tour is over before they made their split official, although Katy has grown tired of the situation.' While Bloom is expected to attend Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sanchez's wedding in Italy solo this week, Katy will remain in Australia. On stage in Sydney earlier this month, she may have subtly referenced her emotional state during a performance of her 2008 track I'm Still Breathing. Handed a pack of Tim Tams by a fan, she said: 'This song is about a break-up, and this Tim Tam saved me. Thank you.' ‌ The couple last appeared together publicly at the Vanity Fair Oscars party in March, and notably did not post tributes to each other on Valentine's Day - the sixth anniversary of their engagement. For Perry, this isn't the first high-profile romance to hit turbulence. She was previously married to British comedian Russell Brand, whom she wed in a lavish ceremony in India in 2010. The marriage ended just 14 months later. Brand famously filed for divorce via text message, a moment Perry later described as devastating. Their split was finalised in 2012, with Perry citing "irreconcilable differences." ‌ Bloom also has a child from a previous marriage - he shares son Flynn, 14, with ex-wife and supermodel Miranda Kerr. Addressing speculation that her relationship with Bloom ended over her Blue Origin space flight, the source dismissed it outright. 'That's nonsense,' they said. 'The truth is that their relationship has been on shaky ground for a long time now. Going to space was a welcome distraction from what was going on, if nothing else.'
