Lunden Esterline, Asterisk Talley win Junior PGA titles; Charlie Woods backs up to T-9

While the U.S. Ryder Cup picture is still unclear, the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team is nearly set.
Lunden Esterline, a 2027 Auburn commit from Andover, Kansas, won the Junior PGA Championship by six shots on Friday afternoon and, in turn, earned an automatic Junior Ryder Cup berth.
Esterline, who fired a second-round 62 to take control, closed in even-par 71 at the Birck Boilermaker Golf Complex's Ackerman-Allen Course to finish the 72-hole tournament at 19 under.
'I'm still trying to comprehend the whole thing, but it feels amazing,' Esterline said. 'It means a ton. It gives me a lot of confidence going into bigger tournaments after this that I can do it, and I proved to myself this week that I'm just as good as anybody else out there.'
Behind Esterline were 2026 Vanderbilt commit Tyler Mawhinney and 2027 recruit Guiseppe Puebla in a share of second. Mawhinney double-bogeyed the par-3 17th hole before capping his closing 69 with birdie. Puebla fired the round of the day by three shots, a 64. Because Mawhinney, who earlier this year teamed with Will Hartman to win the U.S. Amateur Four-Ball, qualified for the U.S. Junior Ryder Cup team via points (along with top-ranked Miles Russell), Puebla received the automatic berth afforded to the runner-up.
Esterline, Puebla, Mawhinney and Russell will be joined by U.S. Junior Amateur winner Hamilton Coleman and a captain's pick to be named Tuesday in competing in the two-day Junior Ryder Cup, which is scheduled for Sept. 23-25 at Nassau Country Club and Bethpage Black (singles only).
Ayden Fynaut of Fresno, California, nearly had a solo second before doubling the par-4 18th hole. He tied for fourth at 12 under with China's Zenghao Hou, who played his final five holes in 4 over.
As for Charlie Woods, he began Friday in the final threesome alongside Esterline, but after back-to-back 66s, he shot 74 to slip to 9 under and T-9. He was 12 under for the tournament until going bogey-double at Nos. 14 and 15.
Woods likely will not receive the captain's pick for the Junior Ryder Cup. That pick should be extended to 2026 Vanderbilt commit Luke Colton, who is the second highest-ranked junior in the World Amateur Golf Ranking at No. 24, behind only Russell (16th) and ahead of Tyler Watts (40th), who is not eligible for the pick because he skipped the Junior PGA to play this week's Western Amateur. Colton, fresh off making the semifinals at the U.S. Junior, declined to the play the Western in favor of chasing a Junior Ryder Cup spot.
Asterisk Talley took the girls division, birdieing two of her last three holes to help offset three bogeys in her last five. Talley earned the one-shot win over Zoe Cusack, who closed her final round bogey-double.

Texas A&M lands former Kansas guard from the transfer portal

So far this offseason, new Texas A&M basketball head coach Bucky McMillan has already landed 11 players from the transfer portal. At the same time, 2025 signee Jeremiah Green and standout international shooting guard Rubén Domínguez have led to 13 total additions. To reach the 15-player roster threshold, McMillan's goal this fall was to add two more veterans to the 2025 roster. On Sunday morning, the 14th player was added to the roster, as McMillan has landed a commitment from Kansas guard Noah Shelby, who will join former Kansas forward Zach Clemence and shooting guard Rylan Griffen, two of the program's first transfer additions earlier this year. Shelby is a McKinney, Texas, native and a four-star prospect in the 2022 recruiting class. Shelby first committed to Vanderbilt before transferring to Rice, then walking on with the Jayhawks, where he averaged 3.9 points while shooting 35% from the field and 33% from 3-point range. A top-20 ranked guard in the 2022 cycle, Shelby is still considered one of the better 3-point shooters and will be entering a fast-paced offense built around shooting efficiency, providing the Texas native a chance to find a place in the rotation. Shelby has 44 games of experience under his belt, which is highly valuable to a new roster under a first-year head coach. Hugh Freeze discusses the 'flash' of Omar Mabson early in Auburn's fall camp

One freshman running back is turning heads at fall camp. One week into fall camp, and the Auburn running back room is just as much a mystery as it was at the beginning. Earlier this week, Auburn head coach Hugh Freeze shared that running backs Jeremiah Cobb and Durell Robinson would be limited due to injury. However, on Saturday, Robinson returned to the practice field while Cobb remained out, and projected starter Damari Alston was held out due to a heel bruise. Limitations for Alston and Cobb left the door open for a true freshman to shine in front of his new coaches. Following Saturday's practice, Freeze shared that he was pleased with the efforts of his running backs that were able to practice, including one in particular. "Man, the other guys are showing up," Freeze said. "Durell (Robinson) had some explosive runs. Alvin (Henderson), there's still a little learning curve for him, for sure. But I tell you the one who is flashing is Omar (Mabson)." Mabson joined the roster a year earlier than anticipated after reclassifying to the 2025 recruiting class and is quickly making strides with his new team. Freeze went on to say that Mabson is hard to tackle due to his 5-9, 213-pound frame and is great at finishing runs. Auburn's running back competition remains wide open with just over four weeks until the Tigers kick off the season at Baylor. With a mix of injuries and inexperience, the running back room will be fun to watch unfold as fall camp continues. Watch Hugh Freeze's press conference from Saturday here. Auburn working to flip three-star DL from Mountain West program

Auburn could add a key name to its 2026 haul after extending an offer to a UNLV pledge. Auburn football could boost its 2026 recruiting haul soon with the addition of a three-star defensive lineman from Texas. Auburn defensive line coach Vontrell King-Williams extended an offer to three-star DL Isaiah Broughton this week, and could soon see a positive result. Following the offer, Sam Spiegelman of Rivals submitted a prediction that favored Auburn flipping Broughton from his current pledge to coach Dan Mullen and the UNLV Rebels. According to Spiegelman's report, Broughton committed to UNLV last month, choosing the Rebels over Vanderbilt, Texas Tech, Texas State, and others. However, with Auburn becoming Broughton's most notable offer, mutual interest is beginning to grow between both parties. Broughton is the No. 126 defensive lineman for the 2026 cycle, and is the No. 162 recruit from Texas according to 247Sports. Should the forecasted flip occur, Broughton would become the Tigers' first defensive line commit and its fifth defensive commitment of the cycle, joining Jaquez Wilkes, Hezekiah Harris, Adam Balogoun-Ali, and Wayne Henry.
