Secret societies using influencers to recruit new blood

KUALA LUMPUR: Secret societies are turning to social media influencers to promote their activities and attract new followers, especially teenagers and school students.
Criminal Investigation Department deputy director Datuk Fadil Marsus said that in the past, secret societies would recruit students in person outside of school.
Now, the secret societies use influencers with large followings among younger social media users.
"Most of them are drawn to the activities highlighted by these influencers," he said in a report by Sinar Ahad.
"The secret societies pay these influencers to promote their activities," he said, adding that police were monitoring the situation. He added that investigations are ongoing.
Fadil said secret societies resorted to criminal activities like robbery, extortion, gambling, human trafficking, and smuggling to generate enough money to survive.
Some also ran protection rackets by intimidating business owners with "threats" that actually came from the group itself.
"They will harass and disrupt the operations of businesses and at the same time, threaten them for money," he said.
Last month, Selangor police arrested six men, aged 20 to 40, who promoted a secret society on TikTok.

Police probe viral video of man assaulted, forced into 4WD

SEBERANG PRAI: Police have launched an investigation after a video showing a man being assaulted and forced into a four-wheel drive vehicle went viral on TikTok. The 2-minute and 5-second clip, which began circulating on the platform on July 17, captured three men assaulting the victim on the head and body before coercing him into the vehicle. Seberang Prai Selatan district police chief Superintendent Jay Januari Siowou said the incident is believed to have occurred at around 7.16pm on July 16. He said initial investigations suggest the attack may have stemmed from allegations of jewellery theft involving the victim. "In the video, three male suspects were seen assaulting the victim on the head and body without using any weapons before forcing him into a four-wheel drive vehicle," he said in a statement today. Siowou said the victim, who suffered injuries to his face and head, received treatment at a hospital. "The victim is also being investigated for a theft case and has been arrested. "He is currently under remand for four days until July 20 to assist in investigations," he said. The case is being investigated under Section 325 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing grievous hurt. "Efforts are ongoing to trace all suspects involved in the incident." Those with information of the incident are urged to contact investigating officer Inspector Sarina Mohd Adam at 017-291 2781. Police also reminded the public not to take matters into their own hands. "We advise the public not to resort to vigilante actions and to allow the authorities to handle the situation in accordance with the law," he said. Meanwhile, two CCTV clips show three men arriving in a white four-wheel drive and forcing a man into the vehicle. In the footage, two men approached the victim, who was standing across the road with a few others, before they began roughing him up. A third suspect, dressed in white, then joined in and dragged the man towards the parked vehicle. One of the suspects was seen repeatedly punching the victim when he tried to resist and escape. While one man carried his upper body, another grabbed his legs, and they shoved him into the back seat. The third suspect then got into the driver's seat and drove off with the victim. Alongside the clips, a voice note of a conversation between one of the suspects and another person claiming to run an NGO has also gone viral. The conversation, believed to be in Tamil, appears to be a confrontation about how the victim was taken. The man, said to be representing the victim, is heard questioning why the group took matters into their own hands if a police report had already been lodged. The suspect responds by saying the victim was wanted for theft and that police had allegedly instructed them to bring him to the station. The caller then says he will lodge a report based on the vehicle's number plate due to the way the three men had assaulted and abducted the victim.

Celebrity preacher exposed by Nurul Izzah has been charged, say cops

KUALA LUMPUR: The celebrity preacher involved in a sexual assault case, as recently revealed by PKR deputy president Nurul Izzah Anwar, has already been charged. Confirming the matter, federal police's Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Sexual, Women and Child Investigations Division (D11) principal assistant director Senior Assistant Commissioner Siti Kamsiah Hassan said eight police reports had been lodged against the preacher. She said seven of the cases took place in Penang, while one occurred in Kedah. "The sexual assault cases involving the celebrity preacher in Penang are currently under trial. "All the victims are male teenagers aged between 13 and 16," she said when contacted today. She said the charges against the preacher were filed in 2023, 2024, and this year. Izzah had previously shared in a Facebook post said the ustaz used a teenager's interest in nasyid to get close to him, but it was merely a ploy to mask his ill intentions. It is understood that the man did not remain silent, and has reportedly filed a lawsuit against the victim's family, demanding a public apology.

M'sian shocked to find nail in his ayam goreng at Wangsa Maju eatery

JUST a few days ago, a Malaysian man found a cockroach in his packet of nasi lemak. Now, another Malaysian has made an equally stomach-turning discovery in his ayam goreng — a nail. In a short 23-second TikTok video shared by @akingdraws, the man looks horrified as he holds up what appears to be a bent nail. 'From where?' his dining companion can be heard asking. 'In the chicken,' the man responds, not taking his eyes off the nail. He explained that he had found it in the ayam goreng that came with his nasi lemak. The video then shows them calling over a restaurant staff member to point out the nail. 'Do you want to kill someone?' the frustrated customer says as the employee takes the plate of food away. @akingdraws warned netizens to be careful and shared that the incident happened at a restaurant in Wangsa Maju. The video quickly went viral, with Malaysians flooding the comments section with a mix of shock, humour and advice. 'That's a metal pin from the chicken's leg, probably from a car accident earlier,' one user joked. 'Wait, that's so scary????' commented another.
