No invite for MVA politicians for Almatti meeting

Time of India20-05-2025
Kolhapur: Politicians of the
Maha Vikas Aghadi
said they received no invitation from state govt to participate in discussions regarding Karnataka's proposals to increase the Almatti dam height on the Krishna river.
Recently, representatives from various parties conducted protests at Ankali Bridge, aiming to draw state govt's attention to the concerns of villagers from Kolhapur and Sangli districts. Local residents and activists said any increase in the dam's height would worsen the existing flood situation, as they attribute the current flooding to the Almatti dam.
Following the dharna, govt officials conveyed that the water resources minister,
Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil
, scheduled a meeting for Wednesday to address these concerns and discuss future steps.
MVA politicians said that invitations were exclusively extended to elected representatives from Mahayuti parties — BJP, Shiv Sena, and NCP — whilst MVA representatives were excluded.
"The list of invitees includes MLAs from constituencies that do not get floods. We staged a dharna by bringing all parties together to avoid politicisation of the issue. However, MVA's elected representatives, who, in a real sense, have to address the inconvenience faced by the people in their constituencies, have not been invited.

If state govt invited us, we would have made suggestions accordingly," said Congress MLC Satej Patil.
Notable omissions from the meeting's invitation list include Sangli's MP Vishal Patil, Kolhapur MP Shahu Chhatrapati, and MLAs Vishwajeet Kadam and Jayant Patil. These representatives' constituencies have rivers that regularly experience flooding during the monsoon.

No more fixed highway targets, states can prioritise projects

New Delhi: In a significant shift in strategy, the ministry of road transport and highways has done away with fixed targets for states and will now collaborate with them on floating targets for the construction of national highways, expressways and greenfield corridors passing through states. Under this, the ministry is expected to offer multiple projects passing through each identified state and leave it to states to prioritise work on these projects unlike the existing practice where states have to work on the project assigned by the Centre. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Bank-Repossessed Cars in the Philippines at Bargain Prices! SUV Deals | Search Ads Search Now Undo The focus, instead, will be on ensuring timely completion of projects and hence the idea of floating targets based on the progress of land acquisition and other regulatory approvals, a senior government official told ET. "The idea is to get projects off the ground to avoid delays that often result in huge time and cost overrun," the official added. Live Events This is expected to give enough flexibility to states to pick up projects which can be quickly started since the majority of the basic requirements are in place. "It is a win-win for both Centre as well as states. There will be a bouquet of roads offered to states for development and states will be allowed to proceed with projects where they see some progress," an industry expert said, adding this will help fast-track completion of pending projects also. While construction of national highways is primarily the responsibility of the ministry of road transport and highway, which works through its autonomous body the National Highways Authority of India, states assist the central government with land acquisition, rehabilitation of project-affected people and obtaining various clearances. The government has set the target of constructing 10,000 km of highways in 2025-26, lower than the 10,421 km target set for 2024-25. Even the monetisation target for the current financial year has been scaled down to ₹30,000 crore compared to the target of ₹39,000 crore set for the preceding year. Besides, the ministry of road transport and highways allocates funds for state governments and union territories (UTs) for development and maintenance of state roads under the Central Road & Infrastructure Fund (CRIF) scheme. The ministry has allocated ₹9,030 crore under the scheme in 2024-25.

CM: No Aryan worth celebrating, so they attempt to steal Thiruvalluvar

Chennai: There have been attempts to paint Tamil poet-saint Thiruvalluvar in saffron and steal him, since there was none worth celebrating in Aryan culture, chief minister M K Stalin said on Sunday. However, Thiruvalluvar cannot be stolen, he said. "Thiruvalluvar is a rationalist, stood for self respect and advocated social justice. If someone attempts to snatch away Thiruvalluvar, they would not be able to bear the intensity of the poet's verses," the chief minister Stalin said after releasing a book on Thirukkural by lyricist Vairamuthu . The first copy of 'Valluvar Marai, Vairamuthu Urai,' was received by former Union finance minister P Chidambaram. In a veiled attack on right wing organisations, Stalin said that rather than stealing, there were attempts to deceive people by painting Thiruvalluvar in saffron. "Tamil society must oppose the attempts to paint ideological colours on Thiruvalluvar." "Manu Neethi cannot enter a place where there was justice based on Thirukkural. When Aryan civilization tried to destroy Dravidian tradition, Thirukkural protected it," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Cách giao dịch ETH/USD mà không cần nắm giữ Ether IC Markets Tìm hiểu thêm Undo You Can Also Check: Chennai AQI | Weather in Chennai | Bank Holidays in Chennai | Public Holidays in Chennai Praising Vairamuthu for his book, Stalin said steps should be taken to make Thirukkural as the national book of India. Vairamuthu said 850 people have written interpretative commentaries for Thirukkural. "I am 851st person. The fact that there is still a lot left to interpret Thirukkural shows the height of Thiruvalluvar's work," he said. Earlier, Vairamuthu went to the memorial of Karunanidhi and placed the book there.

Give land voluntarily for Shaktipeeth, get 25% bonus, says Kshirsagar

Kolhapur: Farmers who voluntarily give up their land for the Shaktipeeth expressway will receive an additional bonus of 25% of the land price, said state planning commission chairman Rajesh Kshirsagar on Saturday evening in Kolhapur. He said farmers will receive two-and-a-half times the land cost, and district collectors will be given the authority to fix the price. Approximately 46,000 hectares of land will be acquired for the Nagpur-Goa Shaktipeeth expressway. In Kolhapur district alone, 5,300 acres will be acquired. "We met officials of the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), the implementing authority for the Shaktipeeth expressway, a couple of days ago. The panel under the district collector will be set up to find a mean of the ready reckoner and market price of the land to compensate the farmers. The base price will be two-and-a-half times the mean cost, and above that, the farmer will receive an additional 25% as a reward for voluntarily giving up their land. Recently, the state cabinet approved Rs 11,700 crore for land acquisition in 12 districts. Govt has agreed to increase the amount for land acquisition if required," said Kshirsagar. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Is it legal? Also, the road width would not exceed 110 metres. "The actual cost of construction is around Rs 51,000 crore. The rest is the interest on the loans, environmental compensation, and land acquisition, which in total takes the project cost to Rs 86,000 crore," added the MLA. Meanwhile, the anti-Shaktipeeth expressway forum challenged anyone supporting the highway to show that their land was in the way of the highway after Kshirsagar claimed that 35 farmers have submitted their 7/12 extracts for land acquisition. Raju Shetti, of the Swabhimani Shetkari Sanghatana, said, "The MLA took 35 people with him to show support for the road project. Some of these people don't have land that will be affected by the project. There are more than 10,000 farmers who will be affected by the project, and showing support from a mere 35 farmers is a clear failure on the part of govt and those supporting the destructive project."
