Malegaon blast acquittals: ‘Army has always supported me,' says Lt Col Purohit; Major Ramesh Upadhyay (retd) thanks Bal Thackeray
Speaking to The Indian Express on the phone from Mumbai, Lt Col Purohit said, 'I am choosing not to talk specifics about the past 17 years and the case. But I want to say that I am thankful to the judiciary and to all my lawyers.
'All the lawyers fought pro bono for me, including the young lawyers. I am grateful to my lawyers, including late advocate Shrikant Shivade, Sadanand Phadke, senior counsel Harish Salve and Mukul Rohatgi, and my young lawyers Viral Babar and Yasir Khan. They have put in their blood and sweat in this,' he said.
An National Investigation Agency special court on Thursday acquitted Lt Col Purohit, BJP leader and former MP Pragya Singh Thakur, Major Ramesh Upadhyay (retired), Sameer Kulkarni, Ajay Rahirkar, Sudhakar Chaturvedi, and Sudhakar Dhar Dwivedi in the case related to the September 29, 2008, blast that killed six people and injured 100 in Malegaon.
The court held that the prosecution failed to provide cogent and reliable evidence and to establish guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
Lt Col Purohit further said, 'When wrong people rise to the position of power, national institutions get contaminated. Then the nation suffers, people like us suffer, and the common man suffers. And healthy organisations like the Army also suffer. When we suffer, the adversary gets the benefit…'
'I am extremely grateful to my motherland for having given me the opportunity to serve her. And now I am extremely grateful to the judiciary because I will again be able to serve my nation as a free man and an Army officer. I am also a believer in service beyond my service in uniform. So whenever I retire, I will keep serving my motherland,' he added.
'The Army has always supported me. Right from sepoys to generals, everyone has extended their affection, love and care to me. I never got a feeling that I was not being looked after. The Intelligence Corps and my parent regiment, Maratha Light Infantry, have taken care of me like a child in the family.'
His wife Aparna Purohit told The Indian Express, 'I can only say that I am relieved. I guess I will take some more time to gather my thoughts.'
Lt Col Purohit has been posted with an Army formation in Mumbai since he was granted bail by the Supreme Court in the case in 2017. When the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorist Squad arrested him after the blast, Lt Col Purohit was stationed at Pachmarhi in Madhya Pradesh, undergoing training in the Arabic language at the Army Education Corps Training College and Centre. He was then attached to a liaison unit of the Army's Military Intelligence.
Major Ramesh Upadhyay (retired), the other acquitted Malegaon blast accused with an Army background, thanked the late Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray, besides his lawyers.
'I am grateful to my lawyers and all those who supported me in the difficult times. Balasaheb Thackeray stood by us. All allegations against me are proved false,' said Upadhyay, 73, while speaking to The Indian Express.
Now residing in Pune, Upadhyay is a native of Ballia district in Uttar Pradesh. The ATS arrested him in the case in 2008, and he got bail in 2017.
Upadhyay contested the Lok Sabha elections in 2019 in Ballia as an independent candidate. Earlier, he contested the UP Assembly elections from Bairia in Ballia district on a Hindu Mahasabha ticket in 2012 with permission from the court.
In 2020, he joined the Janta Dal (United), headed by Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar. The JD (U) then appointed Upadhyay as the state convener for its ex-servicemen cell in UP.
'I have left politics now. I would spend my life in social work,' he said on Thursday.
Sameer Kulkarni, a Hindutva activist from Pune, said he lost valuable years of his life after being arrested in the 2008 Malegaon bomb blast case, but was happy that finally justice had been delivered after the special NIA court acquitted him in the case. He had been out on bail since 2019.
Kulkarni was a resident of the Pimpri-Chinchwad area. He was known to be a member of the Vishwa Hindu Parishad in the past. Investigators alleged that he was an active member of the secretive Abhinav Bharat outfit and was involved in the bomb blast conspiracy.
But, in a press conference in Pune in April 2019, Kulkarni claimed that he had heard about the Malegaon blasts only after the ATS detained him. He further claimed that then ATS chief Hemant Karkare believed he was innocent and would have removed his name from the case, but was killed in the 26/11 terror attack in Mumbai.

Ajay's imprisonment led to his divorce, and Bhanu sold their ancestral house, sparking disputes over property and money, which were ongoing after Ajay's parole, police said. Ajay, who was sentenced to life imprisonment and was serving his sentence at Gwalior Central Jail, was released on parole on July 14. On July 23, while travelling by car from Shivpuri to Gwalior, he was shot dead by unknown assailants. Bhanu attended the final rites, and the family thought they had buried the hatchet, police said. Shivpuri Superintendent of Police Aman Singh Rathore personally monitored the investigation. 'The initial investigation revealed that the complainant, the vehicle driver Bhagat Singh, had stated that an unknown woman, who had been in contact with Ajay after his parole, had boarded the car at Kathmai Tiraha in Shivpuri on the day of the incident. She asked to stop the car at a secluded spot to use the restroom, after which unknown assailants shot Ajay dead,' Rathore said. A team of police officers, who scoured around 500 CCTVs between Shivpuri and Gwalior, found the woman with two of the accused, identified as Dharmendra Kushwah and Monesh Tomar, in Gwalior. It was Dharmendra who set the alarm bells ringing. 'He was involved in seven serious cases, including murder and attempted murder. In 2011, he killed a man named Pinkad Dada in his locality and was released from jail on January 26 after serving his sentence. He also met Ajay in jail,' a senior police officer told The Indian Express. The woman was identified as a juvenile detainee who had escaped custody in Indore. 'She escaped on July 12 and was also spotted in CCTV footage getting out of a vehicle owned by Bhanu. That's when we found that the ASI might be connected,' said an officer. CCTV footage confirmed Bhanu's car following Ajay's car before the incident, and his phone switched off afterwards, an investigator said. 'Bhanu had arranged for the woman to befriend Ajay… Based on a tip-off, Dharmendra and the girl were apprehended. During interrogation, Dharmendra confessed that after his release from jail, he posted photos on Instagram, and Bhanu made contact. He transferred funds to his account multiple times, and allegedly tasked him with settling scores with Ajay,' the officer said. 'On the day of the incident, the woman, as per the plan, had Ajay stop the car in a secluded area, where Bhanu and Dharmendra arrived in the former's car and allegedly shot Ajay dead. Dharmendra was hired for Rs 1 lakh,' the officer said. 'We think Bhanu is in Bangkok; a look out circular has been served,' the officer said.

West Bengal: ‘Massive weapon cache' found in flat, man arrested
A massive arsenal of 15 firearms and 1,000 rounds of ammunition, along with a large amount of cash, was discovered in a multi-story residence in the Regent Park area of Rahra, located in the North 24 Parganas district, police said on Monday. This finding has resulted in the arrest of a resident. According to the police, the arrested individual has been identified as Madhusudan Mukherjee, alias Liton. The investigation began after an earlier seizure of weapons in the Khardah area led police to an arms dealer in Munger. The police said that during interrogation, the dealer mentioned Mukherjee's name. Acting on the intelligence, the Barrackpore Commissionerate's Intelligence Department and local police raided his residence, 'Pratibha Manzil,' on Monday morning. Upon searching the flat, investigators were stunned by the sheer volume of weapons found. 'The recovered firearms include both domestic and foreign-made search operation is ongoing, and authorities believe the final count of weapons and ammunition may be even higher,' said a police officer involved in the investigation. According to the police, initial findings suggest that Mukherjee, who reportedly sourced some of the firearms from Purulia, was storing the weapons and cartridges with the intent to sell them. However, detectives are continuing to investigate whether a larger conspiracy is at play. The police said that neighbors expressed their fear and surprise over the incident. Residents described Mukherjee as a quiet person who kept to himself, living on one floor of the building for the past three years. They stated they had no idea about his background or what he did for a living, and never suspected any illegal activity. Geneva meet: Talks on Global Plastics Treaty resume today
STARTING TUESDAY, over 190 countries will get into a huddle in Geneva, Switzerland, to break an impasse and reach an agreement over the next fortnight on the first-ever Global Plastics Treaty that will create a legally binding framework to end plastic pollution, including in the marine environment. This will be the second installment of the fifth meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5) of the UN. Countries will push to address plastic pollution right from the production stage, which uses polluting oil and gas, to the challenges of plastic waste disposal and recycling. Negotiators will pick up from the previous meeting in Busan, South Korea, last December, where talks had collapsed over critical and unresolved issues. These issues and disagreements were over the draft treaty's provisions on putting a cap on production of polymers, elimination of harmful chemicals from plastic production and phasing out of harmful plastic products. As per the Centre for International Environmental Law, a US-based non-profit, the current draft text issued during Busan contains 370 brackets, which indicate areas of no agreement between countries. It was in 2022 in Nairobi that a resolution was adopted at the United Nations Environment Assembly to develop global rules to end plastic pollution. If successfully adopted, the treaty would be the most consequential one on environmental issues since the 2015 Paris climate agreement. The exponential growth in plastic production is one of the key drivers of plastic pollution. Globally, annual production has doubled, soaring from 234 million tonnes in 2000 to 460 million tonnes in 2019, while plastic waste has more than doubled from 156 Mt in 2000 to 353 Mt in 2019, as per a report of the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Production is likely to triple in a business-as-usual scenario by 2060, as per the UN EP. The talks on the global treaty will resume in the backdrop of a new Lancet report which said that 'plastics cause disease and death from infancy to old age and are responsible for health-related economic losses exceeding $1.5 trillion annually'. Civil society and environmental campaigners have termed the negotiations a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to end plastic pollution and have called on countries to ensure significant cuts in plastic production.
