Obstruction, breach of trust trial for Thunder Bay police officer starts today
Staff Sgt. Michael Dimini will face trial on obstruction of justice and breach of trust charges. The charges are in connection to his duties as a police officer. The alleged offences both occurred on November 24, 2020, according to court documents obtained by CBC.
The charges have not yet been tested in court.
Dimini was originally charged in December 2023 following a nearly two-year Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) investigation. He was originally charged with two counts of assault, breach of trust and obstruction of justice.
In February, the Ontario Court of Justice dismissed one charge of assault against him after a four-day trial. The charge stemmed from an incident that allegedly occurred in Thunder Bay in August 2014.
Earlier this month, a judge acquitted Dimini of a second assault charge related to an alleged incident in October 2016.
Dimini was released from custody after being charged. While awaiting trial, he's been suspended with pay from the Thunder Bay Police Service, as per the Police Services Act.
His release was conditional upon not possessing any weapons or firearms, and refraining from contacting 85 different people.
Alleged misconduct by Dimini was also laid out in human rights complaints filed to the Ontario Human Rights Commission.
Multiple other people are also facing charges after the 2021 OPP investigation into allegations of misconduct at the Thunder Bay Police Service.
Former police chief Sylvie Hauth and ex-Thunder Bay police lawyer Holly Walbourne were charged with multiple obstruction and breach of trust offences for allegedly "practising deception" in interactions with the Thunder Bay police board. Their cases are scheduled to be heard in Superior Court in November 2025.
Another Thunder Bay police officer is also facing breach of trust charges in an unrelated alleged incident. Const. Peter Ritchie allegedly stole property in July 2024. He was arrested in October 2024 on theft and breach of trust charges. Ritchie is due back in court in June.

Create Account Ontario Provincial Police say they responded to the crash at around 9:20 p.m. on Hwy. 48 in the hamlet of Ballantrae, located around 15 kilometres east of Aurora, Ont. Police say the crash happened between two SUVs, though the cause of the crash is not currently known. A 35-year-old man was pronounced dead on scene and four others, including three children, were taken to hospital with injuries ranging from minor to serious. Police say they had to shut down a portion of Hwy. 48 between St. Johns Sideroad and Ballantrae Common for an investigation which has since reopened. ‘Disgusting act of hate': Victoria synagogue vandalized with antisemitic statements

(Image credit: B.C.'s premier and public safety minister are condemning the vandalism of Canada's oldest surviving synagogue and pledging to support police and the community while an investigation is underway. The Victoria Police Department was called to the Congregation Emanu-el Synagogue on Saturday around 8 p.m. 'Officers documented the graffiti, and collected evidence, and then worked with City of Victoria to have it removed,' a spokesperson said in a statement. The Jewish Federation of Greater Vancouver was among the groups who shared an image of the statements scrawled on one of the columns flacking the building's front entrance on social media, along with a statement. 'We absolutely denounce this act of hate and stand in unwavering solidarity with the Victoria Jewish community. No one should ever feel unsafe in their place of worship,' a statement posted to X said. Public Safety Minister Nina Krieger, whose constituency is in Victoria, also decried the vandalism. 'Hate has no place in our province,' she wrote. 'Antisemitism has no place in British Columbia. Hate vandalism, speech and intimidation are not protected expressions — they are crimes and will be treated as such. The province of B.C. stands with our Jewish community, and with all people vulnerable to hate and violence.' Premier David Eby echoed the sentiment. 'Antisemitism has no place in our communities – not now, not ever,' he wrote. 'The Jewish community and police have our full support as they investigate this disgusting act of hate.' The investigation is ongoing, according to police, who said they have no further information to share about the incident. First built in 1863, the synagogue is a national historic site of Canada.
