Rajeev Khandelwal On Why He Quit Kahiin Toh Hoga: "People Thought I Locked Horns With Ekta For My Ego"

New Delhi:
Rajeev Khandelwal, who became a household name after he featured as Sujal Grewal in the Ekta Kapoor prime-time show Kahiin Toh Hoga, revealed why he left the show at the peak of his career. Rajeev shared he was offered a fat pay cheque when he informed the producers about his decision. But he refused the money as he was desperately looking for an improved "quality" of the show.
What's Happening
In a recent interview with SCREEN's "Dear Me...", Rajeev recalled how he took the decision of quitting the show. People's love, which made him a star, also became a deterrent factor for him leaving the show.
"When I quit the show, it was only because I couldn't handle it. People loved me so much, and I thought I was not giving them back in terms of quality. That thinking of me being that for them was not working with me. After the character, I did not pick up any character that was similar to Sujal. I didn't want to be known as this romantic guy who was brooding. So I picked up a series called Time Bomb. I was being offered romantic characters in bulk. My well-wishers were telling me to buy one more house, a few cars, by playing such roles. I did Time Bomb, and it did not work; the same people who wrote big stories about me also wrote about my mighty fall with the same gusto," Rajeev shared.
Rajeev Khandelwal added, "People wrote things like, 'he has become too big for his boots', but nobody knew the truth. What came across was that I locked horns with Ekta, that I am leaving her, and I must be thinking that I have arrived. I quit the show at its peak, refused the money, the popularity, so many thought I was egoistic. After I quit Left Right Left, I also knew I was not going to be offered much work in TV now. I realised no producer would give me work."
Recalling how he was offered a hefty pay cheque, Rajeev said, "I had a lot of fights with the producers; nobody would be happy when you walk out of a show when it's doing well. When I was walking out of Kahiin toh Hoga, I went to Shobha (Kapoor) aunty, at that time, asking to leave the show was perceived as the actor wanted more money, which was also offered to me. They said they will increase my remuneration, and I said reduce it, but give me quality."
About Kahiin Toh Hoga
Headlined by Rajeev Khandelwal and Aamna Sharif, Kahiin Toh Hoga aired on television from September 2003 to February 2007. The show was created by Ekta Kapoor of Balaji Telefilms.

‘Hrithik Roshan, Vidya Balan changed after success': Vidhu Vinod Chopra says, ‘Spine is connected to bank balance'

Filmmaker Vidhu Vinod Chopra is one of the most successful people in Hindi cinema, having produced blockbusters such as Munna Bhai MBBS and 3 Idiots. Much like the protagonist of Munna Bhai, the movie that made him quite a wealthy man, Chopra doesn't mince his words when talking about Bollywood, and how the industry works. He recently talked about collaborating with many filmmakers and actors who went on to become big names, and commented on how success changes a human being. During a Creator x Creator episode hosted by SCREEN, Chopra sat down with director Jaskunwar Kohli, who made the documentary Zero Se Restart, based on the making of Chopra's 12th Fail. Kohli wanted to know Chopra's philosophy behind hiring people to work for him and why he leans towards new faces and inexperienced talent. Chopra replied, 'There is more purity in new people, less corruption. Many people who assisted me have become great filmmakers today; when I meet them now, I can see the difference. When they worked with me, there was a certain purity. Unfortunately, if I cast a new face in my film and that one movie does well, it changes them.' 'Hrithik Roshan, Vidya Balan, and Boman Irani all did films with me at the start of their careers, and the list goes on. As they become successful, they change. That's why I like people who are nobodies, because once you become somebody, you don't remain the same person,' he said. Chopra added that producers, directors, and actors don't care anymore about what they are creating, as long as it is selling well enough. He said, 'The people only care about the hits these days. No one has a vision, and no one wants to create for the joy of creating. They make one massive film with a Rs 400 cr0re box office collection, and suddenly they start walking differently.' Chopra even gave an example of this and told a story of a producer he used to work with and how his entire personality changed after one of his films found success. 'There was a producer who I knew, and he was always very polite while talking and had a soft demeanour. Suddenly one day, he meets me with his chest puffed and some weight in his voice. I asked him, 'Teri koi picture hit ho gayi (Did one of your films succeed)?' He said, 'Sir, you know everything; my film did succeed.' I told him that I had no idea that one of his films worked; all I knew was that his spine is connected to his bank balance, and that's why he was walking upright. These days the spine is always connected to the bank balance and not the quality of their work,' concluded Chopra. He told The Lallantop, 'He is someone who started ignoring the people he started off with, especially after becoming big in his career. I was supposed to do Munna Bhai. We were discussing remuneration, and in my head, I wanted Rs 15 lakhs. Vidhu also offered the same number, but the way he said 'I'll give you 15' miffed me. I asked for Rs 50 lakhs, and decided to not budge from my want just to not take arrogance from anyone.' In a past interaction, the filmmaker recalled when Sanjay Leela Bhansali was his assistant. Chatting with Bollywood Hungama, he said, 'Sanjay Bhansali, ab toh woh Sanjay Leela Bhansali hogaya hai. Woh mera assistant tha. MTV mein kuch award milne they 1942 ko direction ke liye, maine usko bola jaa le. Ab toh zor se chillata hai, tab toh ghabrate ghabrate award lene gaya tha (Sanjay Bhansali, who now goes by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, was my assistant. I won an award for 1942, and I sent him to collect it. He screams a lot these days, but back then, he was a meek guy).'Chopra's last film as a director was 12th Fail, starring Vikrant Massey, and the film received wide critical acclaim along with love from the general public.

Ekta Kapoor Clarifies Her Exit From ALTT In 2021 Amid Streaming Ban: 'Not Associated In Any Capacity'

Last Updated: Ekta Kapoor, who co-founded ALTT under Balaji Telefilms, has now distanced herself from the platform in a strongly-worded statement shared via her social media. Ekta Kapoor has officially clarified that she has had no association with the streaming platform ALTT since June 2021. The statement comes shortly after the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) banned the platform alongside several others, citing the promotion of objectionable and pornographic content. According to the MIB, a total of 25 digital links and platforms were flagged for circulating explicit material through advertisements. These included ALTT, ULLU, Big Shots app, Desiflix, Boomex, Navarasa Lite, Gulab app, Kangan app, Bull app, and Jalva app, among others. Ekta Kapoor, who co-founded ALTT under Balaji Telefilms, has now distanced herself from the platform in a strongly-worded statement shared via her social media. 'Balaji Telefilms Limited, listed on the BSE and NSE, is a professionally run media organization and following the recent amalgamation of ALT Digital Media Entertainment Ltd. (previously its wholly owned subsidiary) duly approved by the Hon'ble NCLT, it operates ALTT wef June 20, 2025," the statement read. She further added, 'Media reports have been in circulation about ALTT being disabled by the authorities, however, contrary to such reports, Ms. Ekta Kapoor and Mrs. Shobha Kapoor are not associated in any capacity whatsoever with ALTT and they had stepped down from their association with ALTT way back in June 2021. Any insinuation contrary to the above facts is strongly denied and media is requested to report the accurate facts." View this post on Instagram A post shared by EktaaRkapoor (@ektarkapoor) Balaji Telefilms also stressed that it is fully compliant with applicable laws and operates with the highest standards of corporate governance. Interestingly, this is not the first time Ekta Kapoor has spoken about the challenges and bold choices behind launching ALTT, formerly known as ALTBalaji. In an interview with journalist Faye D'Souza, Ekta admitted that being 'risque" was a deliberate part of the platform's strategy. 'I had gone for a holiday, and my son was inside the house and I didn't know what was happening," she said, recounting the time there was a protest outside her residence due to ALTT's content. 'Absolutely, yes. I would not deny the strategy," she admitted when asked if being provocative was intentional. Defending her content choices, Ekta said, 'I feel bad girls make history… you have to be out there, and some people will hate you, but you have to say what you believe in." She further clarified, 'I always say that I don't have a problem with sex. I have a lot of problems with sexual crime." She also revealed her vision of making ALTT a sex-positive platform curated by women. 'We are going to normalise sex for the world… and wear it on our sleeves," she said, arguing that showcasing women in bold roles was just as progressive as portraying them in traditional attire. view comments First Published: July 26, 2025, 00:33 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
