Killings near a West Bank village show even Americans aren't immune

Washington Post6 days ago
AL-MAZRA'A AL-SHARQIYA, West Bank — The killings of two young men from this village this month, including a 20-year-old American citizen, marked a notable escalation in the battle being waged by Israeli settlers for Palestinian-owned land in the rolling hills of the West Bank.
Al-Mazra'a Al-Sharqiya, a picturesque village where most residents are U.S. citizens, had for years escaped the worst of the violence roiling the occupied West Bank. But its residents had watched as settlers toted M-16s and Israeli security forces transformed the neighboring hamlet into what its mayor describes as an 'open-air prison' encircled by barricades and fences.

Hamas saw the rising international pressure on Israel, U.S. officials believe, and went back on previous concessions.

The 12 days that turned back the clock on Iran's nuclear program

Now that the rhetorical debris has settled from Israel's 12-day war with Iran, there's growing evidence that Iran's nuclear program suffered such severe damage that it will be neutered for at least a year, and probably far longer. 'Iran is no longer a threshold nuclear state,' one well-informed Israeli source told me. He said that Iran would now require at least one to two years to build a deliverable nuclear weapon, assuming it could somehow hide its activities. Tehran could conceivably try to demonstrate a crude nuclear device more quickly. But Israel would probably see the test coming and could mount a disabling attack, the source said.
