EXCLUSIVE The controversial visual cues Pete Hegseth uses to broadcast his beliefs that have landed in the hot seat AGAIN

Daily Mail02-06-2025
Pete Hegseth, well known for using his body as a billboard for beliefs, is drawing ire again for his choice of political symbolism.
Critics both in and out of the defense department are railing against the defense secretary for wearing a Betsy Ross flag in the breast pocket of his suit - first on Memorial Day and then again Shangri-La Dialogue Summit in Singapore. The image is seen by many as a dog whistle for white supremacy and other forms of extremism.
'WTF!,' wrote Twitter influencer Suzie Rizzio. 'Why is Pete Hegseth using The Betsy Ross flag in his pocket! The Betsy Ross flag is a White Supremacist flag! The Patriot Front Group were marching with these flags last weekend in Kansas!'
'The guy can't show up to a simple ceremony without pissing off half the people in the building,' one Pentagon insider told the Daily Mail. 'This isn't tone deafness. This is outright aggression in terms of optics.'
The image featuring 13 stars in a circle and 13 red and white stripes may seem innocuous enough. It was, after all, the original flag of the United States created in the late 1700s to symbolize the country's first 13 colonies.
The design is commonly attributed to Philadelphia seamstress Betsy Ross, although the identity of its creator is a topic of much historical debate. In any case, the flag remains a proud, patriotic symbol for many Americans.
But the meanings of historic symbols morph over time, and in recent years the flag has become a more subtle alternative to the Confederate flag as an emblem of white supremacist and extremist groups.
Those include the Patriot Front and the American Identity Movement (formerly Identity Evropa), both classified as hate groups by the Southern Poverty Law Center. Various state chapters of the Ku Klux Klan also have used the flag to cover altars, adorn their pamphlets and carry at rallies.
Members of the Patriot Front, a far-right militia group, participate in an anti-abortion march in Washington DC on January 14. Many of the flags they're holding are Betsy Ross designs, which has morphed into an alternative to the confederate flag in recent years for these groups
Because the image is inextricably linked to a time of white power and slavery — when the ideals of freedom and liberty it represented didn't apply to enslaved people, women and many others — some social justice groups see it as a hate symbol.
They say the flag has become particularly uncomfortable in the ultra-polarized Trump era, and is especially insulting when worn by Hegseth, who has abolished all diversity, equity and inclusion offices and programs from the military.
The Pentagon has framed that move as a way to 'ensure that promotion and selection and evaluation are all based purely on merit.' But critics see it as an insult to people of color, contributions they've made in the military and their continuing struggling for an equal playing field in the U.S.
'As a (public relations) move, this is another nightmare,' the insider told us.
The Defense Department formally defended Hegseth's choice of symbolism while appearing with President Donald Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance at Arlington National Cemetery on May 26.
'The Betsy Ross flag is a patriotic symbol of American independence. Secretary Hegseth is proud to display his love of our country, its people, and its history — especially on Memorial Day,' reads a statement Friday by Pentagon Press Secretary Kingsley Wilson.
Hegseth's pocket square, or at least one like it, is made of '100% polyester silk' and sold online for $24 by a veteran-owned company that urges its customers to 'Wear what you war.'
The dust-up about his pocket stuffer comes three days after he made headlines for a tattoo scripted in Arabic on his arm.
Eagle-eyed observers noticed the tat last Tuesday, when Hegseth - a double Bronze Star holder who served tours in both Afghanistan and Iraq - posted a video of himself doing push-ups and jumping jacks with Navy Seals at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam in Hawaii.
The tattoo spells out the word 'kafir,' which in the Quran means 'disbeliever' or 'infidel.'
Muslims immediately decried the tattoo as a sign of disrespect and bigotry.
'This isn't just a personal choice; it's a clear symbol of Islamophobia from the man overseeing U.S. wars,' Nerdeen Kiswani, a pro-Palestinian activist in New York City wrote on social media, describing the tattoo as 'normalization of Islamophobia at the highest levels of power.'
'To the Muslim world the tattoo will be seen as an open declaration of Hegseth's enmity towards them,' wrote commenter Tam Hussein on X.
Others defended the tattoo as a message embraced by veterans of Middle Eastern wars.
'This word is widely recognized among military veterans, especially those who served in the Middle East, as a symbol of defiance against Islamic terrorists,' wrote X user Brother Rachid.
'It's commonly seen on stickers, the backs of trucks, T-shirts, and mugs. Personally, I had it on a hat, a mug, and even on the door of my office.'
Hegseth's 'kafir' seems to be the latest addition among at least a dozen tattoos he has said symbolize his American patriotism and Christian faith.
The words 'Deus Vult' right above it on his right inner arm is widely seen as a symbol of Christian nationalism. Even more controversial is the giant Jerusalem- or Crusader's Cross tattooed on his chest, which many Muslims see as celebrating the slaughter of their people in holy war and Democrats claimed during his confirmation hearings is a symbol of Christian right-wing extremism.
Both, critics say, evoke a conspiracy to rewrite history that America was founded as a Christian nation.
Hegseth has acknowledged that the Jerusalem Cross caused him to be denied a chance to serve in a secure detail in his National Guard unit in Washington D.C.
'I was deemed an extremist because of a tattoo by my National Guard unit in Washington, D.C., and my orders were revoked to guard the Biden inauguration… a Jerusalem cross tattoo which is just a Christian symbol,' he told podcaster Shawn Ryan in an interview.
Scrutiny of Hegseth has been intense since opponents of his appointment - including many in the Defense Department itself - have said the former FOX News commentator wasn't qualified to lead the 3.4 million military and civilian personnel who serve in the federal government's biggest department.
Criticism is especially high as he has faced mounting pressure to resign after sharing detailed Yemen strike plans in a group text chat with other Trump officials on the Signal app.
The Betsy Ross flag made headlines in 2019, when Nike announced it would pull July 4th-themed sneakers bearing the symbol because Colin Kaepernick, the former NFL quarterback and civil rights leader who served as a spokesperson for the company, expressed concerns about its potentially offensive symbolism.
The Southern Poverty Law Center sees the flag's continued use by extremist groups as telegraphing a desire 'to return to a time when all non-white people were viewed as subhuman and un-American,' Keegan Hankes, a research analyst for the group has said.
'Historically, these symbols have been used by white supremacists, both to hearken back to a time when Black people were enslaved, while also painting themselves as the inheritors of the 'true' American tradition.'
The image also has been tied to groups in the anti-government, extremist right-wing Patriot Movement, including the militia movement, which has been using the Betsy Ross flag — among other Revolutionary War-era symbols — since the mid-1990s.
Here are Hegseth's other tattoos:
Jerusalem Cross on his chest
The aforementioned Jerusalem Cross is one of his most distinctive tattoos. It consists of a large Christian cross surrounded by four smaller crosses in each quadrant.
It is an centuries old symbol stretching back to the 13th century where it was used as the symbol of the Kingdom of Jerusalem during the Crusades.
'Deus Vult' on his right bicep
Tattooed on his bicep, Hegseth has the phrase 'Deus Vult' which means 'God will it.' This was a phrase that originated from the First Crusade as a battle cry for Christians.
Hegseth's book American Crusade, which he describes as an examination of what America would be like without American ideal, also ends with 'Deus Vult.'
Cross and sword on right forearm
Other Christian iconography on his arm includes a cross with a sword through it which represents the Matthew 10:34 verse of the bible.
This reads: 'Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth.
I did not come to bring peace, but a sword.'
This was the first tattoo he got while on vacation with his family.
Hegseth also has a Chi-Ro symbol on his upper arm.
This letters from the Greek alphabet: chi (which looks like an X) and rho (which looks like a P). They are also the first two letters of Christ in Greek.
The monogram was an early symbol used to represent Christians.
'We the people' and 1775 on right forearm
His other tattoos mostly center around American patriotism and include many symbols and iconography associated with the USA's independence movement.
On his forearm he has 'We the People' which is the first line of the constitution.
Above this tattoo, he has the date 1775 in roman numerals - the same year that the American War of Independence started.
Hegseth's elbow is surrounded by 13 stars which perhaps is a reference to the stars on the Betsy Ross flag - one of the first flags produced to represent the USA and the precursor to the modern star-spangled banner.
'Join or Die' snake on inside of his forearm
He also has the iconic 'join or die' snake, which is earliest known pictorial representation of colonial union produced by colonists in Colonial America, on his arm.
The cartoon, allegedly drawn by Benjamin Franklin himself in 1754, was published in the Pennsylvania Gazette shows a snake chopped into eight segments - rather than the 13 colonies - with New England included as one, Delaware a part of Pennsylvania and Georgia missing entirely.
American flag and sniper rifle on the upper arm
Hegseth also has a modern depiction of the current flag with a sniper at the bottom of the stars and stripes, signaling his support for the Second Amendment of the Constitutional preserving the right to keep and bear arms.
Hegseth posted a picture of him receiving the body art on his Instagram at NYHC Tattoos in New York which is one of the oldest tattoo parlors in Manhattan.
Infantry Regiment patch also on the upper arm
Hegseth also has a tattoo of his patch used by the 187th Infantry Regiment of the US army which Hegseth was a member of.
This was a glider infantry unit during the Second World War which later fought in the Korean War as part of the airborne regimental combat team. The regiment also fought in later wars such as Vietnam, the Gulf war and the Iraq war.
During his interview with the Big Lead, Hegseth revealed he plans to fill his entire arm with tattoos and then 'resist the temptation' to get anymore.

Park worker faced nasty battle and a $13k invoice from employer when she resigned to care for premature baby

A Minneapolis Park and Recreation employee who quit her job to care for her baby was faced with a shocking ultimatum: return to work - or pay back over $13,000 in maternity leave. Indica Medeiros, who had worked in park maintenance since 2020 gave birth last fall to a baby that was born prematurely. The infant required intensive medical care with Medeiros and her husband, who still works for the Park Board, quickly realizing that returning to work wasn't feasible. The couple were unable to afford child care and their baby's condition demanded full-time attention at home. Ten days before her scheduled return, she informed the Park Board that she wouldn't be coming back and that she would be staying home full-time to raise her two children under age 2. Months after quitting, the Park Board sent Medeiros a $13,400 invoice demanding repayment for her parental leave benefits, citing a clause that required employees to return to work for at least four weeks following maternity leave or risk repaying the lot. The clause, buried in the Park Board's parental leave policy, sparked immediate backlash from labor leaders and the public. Medeiros was told repay all 12 weeks of paid parental leave or face legal action. When she asked to use her accrued sick and vacation days to buy time to arrange childcare, she said the Park Board denied her requests, terminated her employment, and sent her a bill. Medeiros' husband and father-in-law still work in the Minneapolis park system but no grandparent could help with early-morning childcare, and no daycare facility within budget opened before 6am - the time parkkeepers are expected to report for work. 'It was difficult trying to find something that checked all the boxes,' Medeiros said. 'And pricing, obviously, of day care is pretty outrageous.' Laborers Union Local 363, which represents park keepers, filed an unfair labor practice charge, accusing the agency of unilaterally enforcing a policy it never properly bargained over. 'They certainly never sent [the policy] to us,' said AJ Lange, business manager of Local 363. 'They've never enforced this rule before. I did a data request. They confirmed that they don't have any records of enforcing it, so they seem set on making an example of her.' The policy requires employees to return to work for four weeks after using paid parental leave or face a full demand for repayment. Facing union pressure, bad press, and a looming legal deadline, the Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) has backed down, canceling its demand and pledging to change its parental leave policy before the state's sweeping new paid family leave law takes effect in 2026. 'It was scary to think that we would have to not only pay back this massive bill, but on top of our hospital bills,' Medeiros said. 'I was very shocked, because had I known that, I probably would have made different decisions, and it was very stressful on our family the first few months.' 'It was a huge relief to get the letter that they will no longer be legally pursuing me,' said Medeiros, the former parkkeeper at the heart of the dispute to The Minnesota Star Tribune. 'I'm glad that we were able to resolve this and move forward. I couldn't do it without the help from my union and the support of everyone I talked to. I'm glad I get to finally fully focus on my family and the health of my babies.' In the midst of the uproar, the state Department of Employment and Economic Development weighed in. Officials confirmed that under Minnesota's soon-to-be-implemented paid family leave law, employers will not be permitted to make parental leave benefits contingent on return-to-work requirements. Such conditions, the department said, would be illegal. It left the Park Board with few options and in a letter sent this week to Medeiros, MPRB Superintendent Al Bangoura announced a sweeping reversal. 'With the new state law, MN Paid Family Leave, going into effect in January 2026, the MPRB has decided that it, in advance of the law becoming effective, will no longer make its PPL conditional upon returning to work' Bangoura wrote. 'In light of this change, the MPRB will not seek repayment from you of the $13,403.08 in PPL funds.' Bangoura added that the policy was originally 'instituted… to support parent-child bonding,' was being reformed to 'further that goal' and to better reflect the agency's stated values of supporting employees and families. The decision marks a dramatic about-face and a major win for Medeiros and her supporters. The Park Board had originally modeled its parental leave policy on the city of Minneapolis' policy but a city spokesperson confirmed to the Star Tribune the is also now adapting its policies to mirror that of the incoming state law. 'The city is working on implementing the new state law and will share more with city employees as the work continues,' spokesperson Jess Olstad said.

NCIS actor's rape trial reveals disturbing selfie he sent terrified woman after he 'choked her unconscious'

Accused rapist Gabriel Olds had 'painful' sex with a 'scared' virgin who he choked unconscious as she fought desperately to breathe during intercourse, a court heard. The disgraced actor later texted a photo of himself 'humping' a tree despite the woman's requests for him to cease contact. The 53-year-old is charged with multiple counts of rape, sodomy and committing other graphic sex crimes on five women between 2014 and 2023. He was arrested in August last year and pled not guilty. The NCIS star met Jane Doe #7 (JD7) at a 24 Hour Fitness gym in Hollywood, California, in June 2023 as she was exercising on a StairMaster machine. He began flirting with the 31-year-old who was 'intrigued to know him more' and highlighted that he was an actor and writer who associated with A-listers and had attended Yale. They exchanged phone numbers after Olds had been talking about himself - 'monologuing for a long time' - and she 'wanted to leave.' The bespectacled Los Angeles comedy theater manager, a former personal trainer and mental health worker, wore a cream long-sleeved casual shirt over a mauve dress during the proceedings, with her long blonde hair pulled back with a clip. She told prosecutor Yasmin Fardghassemi that she and Olds had their first date on June 24 at The Misfit Bar in Santa Monica where he greeted her with a 'lingering hug.' He 'pressured' her to have an alcoholic drink so she ordered a glass of red wine and drank half. Although she didn't typically drink alcohol, she was 'trying to be cool.' Being pressured by Olds, she said, was a 'common theme' in their relationship. During powerful pre-trial testimony in Department 82 at the Airport Courthouse on Thursday, the witness revealed she felt 'insecure' and had only one sexual partner before meeting the accused and was still a virgin at the time. She disclosed that she suffers from vaginismus, a condition that made sex painful. 'Physical touch was not something that I had really experienced,' she said. She had attended an all-girls school where she was told to 'stay away from boys.' During the bar date, the two shared about their family histories, their different personalities and 'attachment theories.' There followed a brief stroll in nearby Palisades Park, close to the pier, overlooking the Pacific Coast Highway and the ocean. They began making out and Olds pulled down her dress and bra and began 'digitally penetrating' her over her underwear which she described as 'very painful.' She headed home afterwards and told the court Olds' actions her had caused her to bleed in her private area. He asked to see her again and while exchanging 'playful' texts they planned a second date. He immediately began asking her to send sexy pictures of herself which she declined to do. JD2 told the court that at the time she had just had a bad break-up with a co-worker before meeting Olds and was 'definitely curious at this point.' During their second date on July 7, 2023, they had pizza at a restaurant and talked about the novel Olds was writing and the TV show Westworld, the dystopian science fiction Western drama. She told him that she had never had vaginal sex but he didn't believe her. The court previously heard from other Jane Does who were allegedly slapped, punched in the head and back, choked and demeaned verbally by Olds during violent sexual encounters. Prosecutor Fardghassemi asked JD7 if she had heard of the BDSM type of sex which is favored by Olds, to which she responded: 'I live in Hollywood, so yeah, it's around.' After the meal, the pair went back to Olds' home in the Hollywood Hills. They had foreplay on his bed where he gave the woman oral sex - despite her protests - and boasted: 'I'm really good at it.' Without seeking her permission, he then set up his iPhone to record the witness which made her 'uncomfortable.' He told the footage was 'just for me.' She told the court: 'I felt psychologically and physically frozen.' He began having sex with her using condom even though she didn't want to be penetrated. She sobbed as she told the court: 'I'm disappointed that I didn't stick up for myself. I didn't know this person. I didn't love them.' The sex was 'very painful' but she went along with it. 'I basically felt like a leper,' she said. 'I didn't want to seem incompetent.' Despite her showing signs of being uncomfortable, Olds continued with the sex and was 'pretty locked into what he was doing. It was very clear that I was in distress and he was still trying to have sex.' She described the encounter up to that point as a 'disaster.' But things turned far darker and menacing when he strangled her during intercourse without warning using both of his hands. 'He started to choke me out,' she said. 'I remember the pressure getting harder and harder and harder.' She attempted to pull his hands away from her neck to relieve the pressure but became deprived of oxygen 'and things started getting fuzzy.' Olds, though, did not release his grip on her neck. 'There was a point where I went dark,' added the witness. 'I blacked out at that point. I felt really effed up.' When she came to, she was 'afraid' and realized she was in a 'dangerous situation.' She was 'super, super emotional and crying.' She repeatedly told Olds 'I need to go' but the much larger, 6' 1' tall actor remained positioned on top of his 5' 5', 155 pound victim. He seemed to be 'playing dumb' and told her 'let's talk about it.' Attorney Fardghassemi asked if she had wanted to have further intercourse at the time with him in that moment she responded bluntly, 'hell f**king no.' From the bench, Judge Lauren Weis-Birnstein repeated the same phrase to the court for clarity. The woman, who felt 'afraid' and 'embarrassed,' was able to flee Olds' home. He contacted her via text the following day to, in his words, 'clear the air' and she agreed to meet, but in public for her safety. 'I wanted to know if this person actually liked me,' she told the court, and to know 'How did something like that happen?' She shared a few more dates with Olds. They sometimes made out - with him taking more cell phone videos of her - but there was no more intercourse, despite his requests. During one get together at his home she had a panic attack because she didn't feel safe with him and she left. On July 12, he texted that she made him 'swoon' but she stated she could not 'recover trust.' She asked him to delete the videos he had taken of her and on August 3, 2023 told him via text to stop contacting her. However, on February 14 the following year - Valentine's Day - he texted her photos of himself 'humping' a tree and wrote: 'The last one is like me when I was inside of you :)' When she was shown the image Judge on a the prosecutor's laptop, the judge remarked: 'I can't tell what he's doing to the tree.' In a text to Olds on February 18, 2024 JD7 said of him: 'I have a visceral reaction of fear.' She later looked up his name online which was when she discovered he had been arrested and then contacted the Los Angeles Police Department. The bachelor actor has also appeared on popular TV shows such as Law & Order, Charmed and Boardwalk Empire and portrayed televangelist Pat Robertson in the 2021 indie film The Eyes of Tammy Faye alongside Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield. On Friday, the judge determined that Olds would stand trial on 12 felony counts and kept his bail at $3.5 million. Det. Brent Hopkins, who headed up the police investigation, told the Daily Mail exclusively: 'This was a long, extremely emotional hearing where these survivors bravely shared their stories. 'We're thankful they and all the other witnesses had the strength to see it through. 'We keep finding new stories, so if there are others out there who have not yet had their say, we hope to give them a chance to speak, as well.' Olds is being held at Los Angeles County Sheriff's North County Correctional Facility. He could spend the rest of his life behind bars if convicted on all counts.

Dizzy with glizzys: hotdog spill on Pennsylvania highway leaves motorists steamed

A highway outside of Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania, was dizzy with glizzys on Friday after a truckload of hotdogs spilled across the I-83, as local commuters learned that even the weakest hot dog link can cause a chain reaction. State police said the tractor trailer had an unspecified mechanical problem on Interstate-83 a few miles north of the Maryland line as morning rush hour was wrapping up, causing it to push into a passenger vehicle. When the truck scraped along a concrete divider, its trailer was ripped open and the contents scattered. As crews worked to ketchup with the rolling dogs, they came face to face with the unpleasant nature of how the sausage is made when it comes to roadside cleanup. 'Once those leave the truck and hit the road, that's all garbage, and it's still pretty warm,' Brad Dauberman, the Shrewsbury fire company chief, said as crews worked to snap up franks grilling in the summer sun. The dogs are sadly unusable, and will likely go to slaughter. Dauberman said that he did not relish the cleanup task. 'I can tell you personally, hot dogs are very slippery,' the fire chief said. 'I did not know that.' The four people injured might not feel like weiners, but need not fear for the wurst, as police said their injuries were not life threatening.
