Hear Sly and the Family Stone Rock a Small Club in 1967 With Funky ‘I Gotta Go Now'

Yahoo10-06-2025
The funky farewell number from a rare concert recording of Sly and the Family Stone, from 1967, shows how playful the group was in their early days. The medley, 'I Gotta Go Now (Up on the Floor)/Funky Broadway,' opens with climbing organ and horn lines and a funky drumbeat as the group sings, 'I gotta go now,' and it just gets funkier from there. It ends with a riotous 'baahye,' and the audience laughing and clapping. The song features on the album, The First Family: Live at Winchester Cathedral 1967, which previously came out for Record Store Day but is now getting a wide release on July 18.
The album features the earliest known live recording of the band, captured at Redwood City, California's Winchester Cathedral, where they played about an hour's worth of Joe Tex, Ben E. King, and Otis Redding covers. It will be available digitally, as well as on vinyl and CD; the CD edition includes a bonus track, a cover of Otis Redding's 'Try a Little Tenderness.' The liner notes to the physical editions contain exclusive interviews with Sly Stone and all of the other original members of the Family Stone, along with never-before-published photos.

'The Winchester Cathedral recordings showcase a one-of-kind outfit that was already at the peak of its powers, long before it became internationally famous,' the set's producer, Alec Palao, said in a statement. 'Sly is fully in command, while the unique arrangements and tighter-than-tight ensemble playing point clearly to the road ahead, and the enduring influence of Sly & The Family Stone's music.'
The concert on the album took place on March 26, 1967, toward the end of the group's Winchester Cathedral residency, when they served as house band from December 1966 through the end of April 1967. The group's manager, Rich Romanello, recorded the gig. Romanello shelved the tapes after the band signed to Epic; Dutch twins and Family Stone enthusiasts Edwin and Arno Konings rediscovered them in 2002.
The band's debut album, A Whole New Thing, came out in October 1967. None of the songs from the concert recording, which include many covers, featured on the record. The only original composition, 'I Ain't Got Nobody (For Real),' would later appear on 1968's Dance to the Music.

Demi Lovato's Pop Sound Coming Back From the Dead on ‘Celebratory' New Dance Album

Fans of Demi Lovato's pop music can officially come out of mourning. According to a report from Rolling Stone published Monday (July 21), the singer is set to resurrect her mainstream influences on a dance-heavy new album, despite committing to a punk-rock pivot over the past few years. Though many details of the LP are still under wraps, the publication confirmed that Lovato has been hard at work on a 'celebratory dance-pop album' with executive producer Zhone, who says that the former Disney star is a 'master in the studio.' 'It's been so inspiring working with Demi and experiencing her journey of continued leveling up,' he told RS. More from Billboard Demi Lovato Is Ready to Heat Up Summer With Sizzling Preview of Dance Floor-Ready 'Fast' Single Shakira & The Weeknd to Headline 2025 Global Citizen Festival in Central Park The Who Kick Off Farewell Tour in Italy, Perform First Show Since Zak Starkey Sacking 'This album is about letting inhibitions go, and we had so much fun making this music!' Zhone added. 'It really comes across throughout.' Led by an EDM-tinged single titled 'Fast' — which Lovato has been teasing via video snippets on social media — the upcoming full-length is expected to mark a return to the form of the Camp Rock alum's past pop-focused Billboard Hot 100 hits (think: 2015's 'Cool for the Summer' or 2017's 'Sorry Not Sorry'). It'll follow 2022's distinctly punk-rock effort Holy Fvck, which reached No. 7 on the Billboard 200. Shortly before releasing Holy Fvck, Lovato commemorated the end of a pop-music era by posing solemnly in a photo with members of their team — including then-manager Scooter Braun — dressed all in black. 'A funeral for my pop music,' Lovato wrote at the time on Instagram. The star later doubled down on her pivot to rock music by releasing Revamped, an album of past Lovato pop hits reimagined in the edgier genre. With the new album approaching, however, Lovato recently shared a video on TikTok poking fun at their past departure from the mainstream, writing, 'my pop music coming back to life after we held a funeral for it.' One major change in Lovato's personal life that has informed her musical homecoming is the vocalist's marriage to producer Jordan 'Jutes' Lutes,' according to RS. The pair tied the knot this past May. 'Over the past few years, Demi has found love, joy, and newfound confidence, making the choice to approach life with much more lightness and fun,' one unnamed source reportedly told the publication. 'She took this sentiment into the studio, which can be felt in every track on this celebratory dance-pop album.' Though Lovato always had an edgier sound than many of their fellow Disney Channel-bred pop stars, the performer shined in the pop-music landscape before transitioning away to rock. From 2008's debut LP Don't Forget to 2021's Dancing With the Devil, all seven of Lovato's studio albums leading up to Holy Fvck charted in the top 5 of the Billboard 200. Lovato has also scored a number of Hot 100 hits over the course of her pop career, including top 10 entries 'Heart Attack' and 'Skyscraper.' Mariah the Scientist Taps Kali Uchis for Ultimate R&B Queen Link-Up

Hearts Sold Separately is just weeks away — and Mariah the Scientist is giving fans another song to preview her upcoming record. On Thursday, the R&B singer released the sultry 'Is It a Crime,' featuring Kali Uchis' luscious vocals. 'Tell me, what's it to ya? Tell me, is it a crime/To fall, to fall in love, in love a couple times?' questions Mariah in the chorus. Uchis then responds in her sexy verse: 'Is it a crime? How's it a crime? No/'Cause if loving me is jail, then you're my prisoner.' Her last album, To Be Eaten Alive, was released in 2023, featuring collaborations with 21 Savage, Young Thug, and Vory. As for Uchis, who teased the collaboration with Mariah on Instagram, she released her album Sincerely earlier this year, featuring standouts 'It's Just Us,' 'Sunshine & Rain,' and 'Sugar! Honey! Love!' Rolling Stone gave Sincerely, four stars and called it a 'vulnerable meditation on motherhood, her own childhood, and the challenge of holding opposing truths with equal care.' The Colombian-American star is set to go on her first-ever headlining arena tour in mid-August, stopping at venues such as the Kia Forum in LA and Madison Square Garden in New York. Thee Sacred Souls will join her as an opener. Chappell Roan Finally Releases Long-Awaited Ballad ‘The Subway'

Chappell Roan breaks down seeing her ex on public transit on her new song 'The Subway,' which dropped Thursday. The ballad has been a highly anticipated song for her fans ever since she began singing it during her live sets last summer. 'I'm very proud of this song & what a journey she has been on. I first played it at gov ball when I was painted green as lady liberty and in the past have played new songs live to feel them out,' Roan wrote on Instagram after its release. 'Obviously not knowing this really chaotic year would follow the performance, it didn't really leave me the time to build the world the song deserved. But finally, we are here.' More from Rolling Stone Mariah the Scientist Taps Kali Uchis for Ultimate R&B Queen Link-Up Demi Lovato Sets Release Date for Dance-Pop Album's First Single, 'Fast' Sia and Cypress Hill Join Forces for LAFC Anthem, 'Street x Street' On the song, Roan runs into her green-haired ex on the subway and it brings back all the same grief she felt from the end of the relationship. As the song progresses, she reveals her hopes to move on to the point where her former lover is 'just another girl on the subway.' But her alternative plan if that doesn't happen is to move to Saskatchewan, as she jokes on the second verse. 'I def ripped my hair out trying to figure out the puzzle of how this song should feel musically and visually and emotionally, luckily there are some to spare,' Roan said on Instagram. 'Thank you for sticking it out for a whole year. It was worth it to make sure everything was absolutely right.' Her spring single 'Good Luck, Babe' became a Top 10 hit as did her 2020 song 'Pink Pony Club.' In August of last year, she revealed to Rolling Stone, however, that she would not be releasing it as the follow-up to 'Good Luck, Babe!' 'I just like performing it,' she said at the time. 'I have two others that I really want to perform, too, [but] I don't know what's next. When I don't know, it just hasn't hit me yet because usually I know. I always have an answer. I don't think it's 'Subway.' ' She ended up not officially releasing a new song before the end of 2024. Her next single, the bold country-pop cut 'The Giver,' arrived in March, three months after she sang it during her Saturday Night Live debut. Since then, Roan has been playing festivals all over Europe and the U.K. Roan will release a video for 'The Subway' on Friday morning. She was seen filming the visual all over New York City and teased it with paper flyers as well. She did not film videos for either of her last two singles; this will be her first one since 'Hot to Go!' in August 2023. This fall, Roan will be playing a string of pop-up shows in New York, Los Angeles, and Kansas City. She announced with the show dates that she will be taking some time off to finish working on her sophomore album.
