Kota Belud makes debut as stopover on Sail Malaysia's Passage to the East this year
State Assistant Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, who is also Sabah Tourism Board (STB) chairman, said Kota Belud's inclusion is a fitting addition to the rally as the district is known for its horse-riding tradition.
It is also known for its strong Bajau heritage and growing reputation in community-based tourism, he said.
The annual sailing rally, which began in April, will arrive in Sabah this July with over 31 yachts and 70 participants from 15 countries scheduled to explore coastal and inland attractions from July 18 to Sept 1.
New participating countries include Lebanon, Turkey, Kuwait, Tunisia, and India, reflecting the growing global interest in Malaysia's sailing route and Sabah's diverse tourism offerings.
Bangkuai, who serves as patron of Sail Malaysia Borneo, said the rally helps promote Sabah to international travellers and strengthens its position as a culture, adventure and nature destination.
'The inclusion of new countries and destinations like Kota Belud is a promising sign as Sabah builds momentum toward Visit Malaysia Year 2026,' he said.
Sabah's growing popularity as a yachting destination is also supported by ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure, with several new berthing areas, including in Tuaran, being identified to cater to increasing interest from international sailors, he added.
Bangkuai encouraged organisers to enhance collaboration with the STB to further promote the Sabah leg as a key highlight of the entire rally.
He recently chaired a Sail Malaysia coordination meeting attended by the Eastern Sabah Security Command (ESSCOM) and key tourism stakeholders to ensure smooth operations and safety throughout the Sabah segment.
Sail Malaysia managing director Sazli Kamal Basha said the rally follows the familiar eastern route starting in Langkawi, with Sabah stops including Kota Kinabalu, Tuaran, Kudat, Lahad Datu, Kunak, Kinabatangan, Sandakan, Tawau and Semporna.
'Participants will have the rare opportunity to sail inland along the Kinabatangan River, one of Sabah's most iconic wildlife corridors, known for its rich biodiversity and natural beauty,' he said.
He said many sailors are drawn to Sabah for its natural beauty, safe harbours and the warm welcome offered by local communities.

Published on: Saturday, July 26, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jul 26, 2025 Text Size: STB Deputy CEO Tay Shu Lan (sixth from right), STB Senior Marketing Manager Humphrey Ginibun (fifth from right) and T'way Air Regional Manager KK Airport Station Kim Minkeun (fourth from right) with T'way Air pilots and crew at KKIA. Kota Kinabalu: The Sabah Tourism Board (STB) welcomed a new direct charter service by T'way Air from Daegu, South Korea, to Kota Kinabalu. Operating four times a week - every Monday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday – this seasonal route runs from July 24 to Aug 24. The first flight, which landed at Kota Kinabalu International Airport at 9.35pm on Thursday, received a strong response with 182 passengers on board. This seasonal route marks a key development in enhancing international air connectivity to Sabah and is expected to significantly boost inbound tourism from South Korea, one of the State's key markets. 'We are thrilled to welcome T'way Air and its passengers to Sabah,' said Julinus Jeffery Jimit, CEO of the Sabah Tourism Board. 'This new charter flight service reflects Sabah's position as a key destination for South Korean travellers, known for their love of tropical nature and cultural discovery. We are confident this will be an important step in revitalising tourism flows and offering South Koreans easier access to the incredible experiences Sabah has to offer.' As of May 2025, Sabah received 76,685 South Korean visitors, reflecting a growing demand for the State's unique natural and cultural offerings. This seasonal charter complements T'way Air's existing daily service between Incheon and Kota Kinabalu, further reinforcing the airline's commitment to the Sabah market. Sabah offers a range of attractions perfect for South Korean tourists, including world-class diving, pristine islands, lush jungles, indigenous heritage and Mount Kinabalu – a Unesco World Heritage site. Known for their love of eco-tourism and tropical escapes, South Korean travellers will find Sabah an ideal destination for nature and adventure. This charter initiative is a result of close collaboration between Sabah Tourism Board, T'way Air and local tourism operators, further strengthening Sabah's position as a must-visit destination for travellers from South Korea. The Board is confident that this service will not only drive more immediate tourism growth but also set the stage for expanded air services in the future. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Tuaran event draws 100 sailors from 16 nations
Published on: Saturday, July 26, 2025 Published on: Sat, Jul 26, 2025 Text Size: Joniston mingles with the sailors during the Dalit Bay Nautica Carnival 2025 event in Tuaran. Tuaran: The presence of more than 100 sailors and 29 yachts from 16 countries for the Dalit Bay Nautica event is proof that Sabah is now being recognised and appreciated globally as a sailing destination, said Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor. He expressed hope that nautical tourism such as this will soon become one of the main tourist attractions or activities in the State. 'Sabah offers a variety of sailing experiences and, in fact, there is strong potential to become a sailing destination given our beautiful and pristine beaches. 'I believe nautical tourism or recreational sailing activities have the potential to attract more visitors to Sabah, and in turn, generate economic spillovers for the local communities. 'Therefore, we need to seize the prospects of sailing activities given the State's strategic location with its natural advantages and many waterways. 'Just like Dalit Beach, with its stunning coastline, rich cultural diversity and strategic location facing the South China Sea, this area holds great potential to become a world-class tourism destination,' he said when officiating the Dalit Bay Nautica 2025 event, Friday. His speech was delivered by Assistant Minister of Tourism, Culture and Environment Datuk Joniston Bangkuai. The Chief Minister said the event will also help to boost tourism, promote cultural heritage and stimulate economic activity in the State. 'This will definitely put Sabah on the global coastal map and is a good indicator of growth in the State's tourism sector. 'Without a doubt, this event will further diversify our tourism offerings and help us achieve our target of 3.5 million tourist arrivals to Sabah this year. 'As the second largest state in Malaysia, Sabah has everything to offer, from deep seas to towering mountains. This makes Sabah one of the world-class tourism destinations. 'The beauty and richness of our flora and fauna, and the wonders of nature such as our oceans, islands, mountain ranges and forest reserves are natural treasures enjoyed and admired by many,' he said. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news? Pontianak-Kuching flights to resume Sept 12, boosting tourism and connectivity
Abdul Karim (centre) speaks to reporters. – Photo by Henrietta Liza KUCHING (July 25): The long-awaited resumption of the direct Pontianak-Kuching flight route is set for this Sept 12, a move expected to significantly enhance regional connectivity while boosting Sarawak's medical tourism and live entertainment sectors. Sarawak Minister of Tourism, Creative Industry and Performing Arts, Dato Sri Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, has confirmed that although the final official confirmation is pending, initial indications suggest the route will operate two flights daily. 'It's about RM180 for a one-way trip, if I'm not mistaken,' he told reporters at the launch of Air Supply's 50th anniversary concert, here today. Abdul Karim highlighted the strategic timing of the flight resumption, coinciding with the concert scheduled for Sept 24. 'The event is expected to attract a sizeable number of fans from Indonesia, particularly from Pontianak. 'There are a lot of rich people down there (in Pontianak). Every time we host a concert, many of them come by road. 'During last year's countdown event, the Tebedu CIQS (Customs, Immigration and Quarantine Complex) was jammed for three hours,' he said. The minister also cited encouraging performance of the Jakarta-Kuching direct flight, which had maintained a passenger load factor consistently above 80 per cent, driven by demand from Indonesian travellers. According to Abdul Karim, the Singapore tourist arrivals are showing an upward trend, while Brunei remains a significant market for Sarawak's tourism industry. 'More than 100,000 Bruneians enter Sarawak every year, whether for entertainment, marathons, extreme sports, or 4×4 rallies. 'Brunei has always been a strong supporter of our tourism,' he said. Abdul Karim also reaffirmed Indonesia's position as the primary source of foreign medical tourists to Sarawak, especially from Pontianak and Jakarta. According to him, many of these patients travel overland for up to five hours, while others opt to fly via Jakarta before arriving in Kuching. 'With direct flights now available from both Pontianak and Jakarta, we anticipate a significant increase in medical tourist arrivals from Indonesia,' he said. Additionally, Abdul Karim hinted at the potential for a future direct flight route between Balikpapan and Kuching. 'Probably in the future, we never know – Balikpapan might be… (having direct flights from Balikpapan to Kuching),' he said with optimism. Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah flights Kuching Pontianak
