US tariffs to take effect on August 1, says Trump as deals near completion
In comments made to reporters on July 6, Trump revealed that he expects the majority of trade agreements to be finalised by July 9, according to a Reuters report. He added that while some countries would receive letters outlining higher tariffs, deals could be signed with others. Trump indicated that the letters, signalling impending tariff hikes, would begin going out on July 7, with some possibly arriving the following day. He noted that the process will involve a combination of formal letters and completed trade deals.
'I believe we'll have most countries sorted by July 9, either through a letter or a deal,' Trump said before boarding Air Force One to return to Washington after a weekend in New Jersey.
'We've also made deals, so we'll have a mix of letters and agreements in place,' Trump added, though he did not specify which countries or groups would fall into either category.
Trump's Liberation Day tariffs and what followed
Trump had initially announced a base tariff of 10 per cent on most of America's trading partners earlier this year, with the possibility of additional duties reaching up to 50 per cent. However, in response to growing global financial concerns, the US president delayed the full enforcement of tariffs, with only the 10 per cent increase taking effect on July 9. This new delay offers an additional three-week window for further negotiations before the full set of tariffs, including those above 10 per cent are implemented.
Lutnick further clarified that, despite the new August 1 deadline, President Trump is already in the process of finalising tariff rates and trade agreements, with many of the deals expected to be concluded in the coming days.
While the details of the new tariffs remain unclear, these developments highlight the Trump administration's concerted effort to reshape global trade in its favour, focusing on reducing trade deficits and securing more favourable terms for American businesses.

Huaweis AI lab denies that one of its Pangu models copied Alibabas Qwen
BEIJING/SHANGHAI, July 7 (Reuters) - Huawei's artificial intelligence research division has rejected claims that a version of its Pangu Pro large language model has copied elements from an Alibaba model, saying that it was independently developed and trained. The division, called Noah Ark Lab, issued the statement on Saturday, a day after an entity called HonestAGI posted an English-language paper on code-sharing platform Github, saying Huawei's Pangu Pro Moe (Mixture of Experts) model showed "extraordinary correlation" with Alibaba's Qwen 2.5 14B. This suggests that Huawei's model was derived through "upcycling" and was not trained from scratch, the paper said, prompting widespread discussion in AI circles online and in Chinese tech-focused media. The paper added that its findings indicated potential copyright violation, the fabrication of information in technical reports and false claims about Huawei's investment in training the model. Noah Ark Lab said in its statement that the model was "not based on incremental training of other manufacturers' models" and that it had "made key innovations in architecture design and technical features." It is the first large-scale model built entirely on Huawei's Ascend chips, it added. It also said that its development team had strictly adhered to open-source license requirements for any third-party code used, without elaborating which open-source models it took reference from. Alibaba did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment. Reuters was unable to contact HonestAGI or learn who is behind the entity. The release of Chinese startup DeepSeek's open-source model R1 in January this year shocked Silicon Valley with its low cost and sparked intense competition between China's tech giants to offer competitive products. Washington, July 7 (UNI) The differences between Donald Trump and Elon Musk have widened further after the US President called Tesla chief's plans to form a new political party "ridiculous" and said that he is becoming a "TRAIN WRECK". In a post on his Truth Social platform, the Republican said the Tesla and SpaceX boss was becoming a "TRAIN WRECK" and that a third political party "never succeeds" in the US, referring to Mr Musk's "America Party". Musk announcing the formation of his own political party, which he called "America Party" is being seen as as the "latest nail in the coffin". Trump emphasized that a third party will just add to more confusion and moreover stating that the idea of a three party system has never worked in the United States. "I am saddened to watch Elon Musk go completely 'off the rails,' essentially becoming a TRAIN WRECK over the past five weeks. He even wants to start a Third Political Party, despite the fact that they have never succeeded in the United States - The System seems not designed for them," President Trump said. Defending two-party system in the country, Trump told White House reporters, "I think it's ridiculous to start a third party. he can have fun with it. We have a tremendous success with the Republican Party. The Democrats have lost their way, but it's always been a two-party system, and I think starting a third party just adds to the confusion." He said the one thing third parties are good for is the creation of "complete and total DISRUPTION and CHAOS, and we have enough of that with the Radical Left Democrats, who have lost their confidence and their minds!" "Additionally, Elon asked that one of his close friends run NASA and, while I thought his friend was very good, I was surprised to learn that he was a blue blooded Democrat, who had never contributed to a Republican before. Elon probably was, also. I also thought it inappropriate that a very close friend of Elon, who was in the Space Business, run NASA, when NASA is such a big part of Elon's corporate life.
