Prince Andrew takes up new hobby after threat of eviction from crumbling Royal Lodge home

Daily Mirror21-04-2025
The Duke of York is locked in a bitter dispute with King Charles over continuing to live at the 30-room mansion Royal Lodge in the shadow of Windsor Castle where major repairs are needed
Prince Andrew has turned his hand to gardening, as he aims to spruce up his crumbling Royal Lodge home while under the threat of eviction. The Duke of York, who was pictured alongside the family on Easter Sunday, has been described as having 'a spring in his step', busying himself by pottering around the Windsor estate and even asking groundsmen for gardening tips.
Andrew is locked in a bitter dispute with his brother, King Charles, over him continuing to live at the 30 room mansion Royal Lodge in the shadow of Windsor Castle, despite major repairs being needed on the property. The King even offered Andrew, who was forced to step back from all royal duties after his close relationship with a convicted paedophile was exposed, the chance to move into the four bedroom Frogmore Cottage, previously owned by Prince Harry and his wife Meghan that would be more manageable.

But the disgraced Duke has insisted on staying put, claiming he will be able to pay the estimated £2million renovation fees desperately needed. Royal sources suggest the so-called 'Siege of Royal Lodge' has led to a drastic state of relations between the King and Andrew.
However, after the death of the late Queen Elizabeth II, the King decided that his brother would be allowed to attend family events, such as Easter and Christmas gatherings.
Andrew has told close friends he is 'going nowhere' and told the King and the Crown Estate who own Royal Lodge, that he has a 'cast iron lease' that he signed for 75 years in 2002. Work did start on the roof and crumbling facade of the property last year but has since ground to a halt.
The Duke's finances have been shrouded in mystery after he was forced in February 2022 to pay £12million to Virgina Giuffre, a woman who accused him of sexually assaulting her on three occasions in 2001.

Now sources say he is looking to project manage renovations himself and even taking on some of the landscaping in a bid to save money. One royal source said: 'The Duke has been walking round the estate a lot recently, speaking to staff and asking for tips on managing the grounds.
'The whole place has fallen into disrepair and needs a lot of attention. "He's been asking about different kinds of trees and shrubs and whether it would be possible to move or relocate certain trees.
"He's certainly got a spring in his step and is a lot cheerier of late, which is surprising given everything he has going on.'

After being outcast from royal life, Andrew, 65, spent months moping around in his house, watching TV in a dark room.
He was forced to miss the royals' Christmas gathering at Sandringham in Norfolk after being dragged into a scandal involving an alleged Chinese spy who he went into business with and was later banned from entering Britain.
But staff on the estate say he has been invigorated by being invited back into the family picture.
Reports today suggested the disgraced Duke could be in line for a dramatic return to royal life, with the King keen that he is not outcast forever.
But well placed sources have told The Mirror any chance of redemption 'will never happen'. The source added that Prince William 's central role in the monarchy would prevent his uncle from ever returning to the fold, believing Andrew to be 'utterly toxic' for the royal brand.
Our source added: 'He's no Alan Titchmarsh but he's certainly showing a different kind of enthusiasm for finding ways to stay in his house.'

Prince Andrew must face Congress over ties to pal Epstein, demands top victims' lawyer

Renowned US attorney Gloria Allred, who represents multiple victims of the late sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, has demanded that the Duke of York, 65, testify before US lawmakers Prince Andrew has been urged to reveal all he knows about pervert Jeffrey Epstein under oath. US lawyer Gloria Allred, who represents victims of the late tycoon, said the Duke must appear before Congress. She added: 'He can volunteer to testify. His silence is a statement that he's not willing to help.' Andrew, 65, denies sleeping with Epstein victim Virginia Giuffre. The US crook's ex, Ghislaine Maxwell, is now in a 'cushy' prison. Andrew once vowed to fight against sex trafficking amid the furore of his links to paedophile pal Jeffrey Epstein. And US lawyer Gloria Allred said the disgraced Duke should honour that pledge by finally testifying before Congress on what he knows about the late tycoon's activities and help victims get justice. Andrew, 65, is accused of refusing to co-operate with US investigators, despite giving a BBC interview in which he denied sleeping with Virginia Giuffre, a teenage sex trafficking victim of Epstein's. Ms Allred, who represents several Epstein victims, said: 'There's nothing Prince Andrew can say or do to make it go away. It is news now all over the world. People want to know, who was involved in trafficking or sexually abusing children? 'That's a legitimate question. His silence is a statement that he's not willing to help for some reason. So all I can say is, now more than ever, he should come forward. 'He could volunteer to testify publicly. He volunteered to give an interview on the BBC, why can't he now volunteer to give an interview to the Justice Department or Congress, or both? 'I called on Andrew to speak to the FBI. I would say now more than ever, it's urgent. Is he willing to testify before Congress? Is he willing to give more information to the Justice Department? And if not, why not?' Andrew reached a multi-million pound settlement with Ms Giuffre in 2022 – without admitting liability – despite his denial that he had sex with her when she was 17. A picture appearing to show the Prince with his arm round the teenager also emerged, but he has repeatedly and vehemently denied the pair ever met. At the time of Andrew's payout, a statement on his behalf read: 'He pledges to demonstrate his regret for his association with Epstein by supporting the fight against the evils of sex trafficking, and by supporting its victims.' As a foreign national, Andrew cannot be subpoenaed to appear before Congress. But Ms Allred said he does not even have to visit the US to give his side of the story. And she told how she believes the Duke's name is in US government files on Epstein's sick operations, which she said should be made public. Ms Allred said: 'Many in Congress have said that they support the release of the file. I'm talking about Republicans and Democrats. 'US Attorney Geoffrey Berman called publicly on Prince Andrew to give an interview to the FBI and the Justice Department. That never happened. That's why I'm saying his name has to be in the file. You don't have to be subpoenaed to be willing to testify. He could testify. He should testify. 'I think there should be a release of all the files, which are apparently more than 100,000 pages, part of the Justice Department files, which would've included investigations by the FBI. The names of the victims or identifying information should not be released.' The Duke has not visited to the US in recent years, amid claims he fears lawsuits. But Ms Allred added: 'He shouldn't be in fear if he did nothing wrong. But he doesn't have to come back here. I would think his testimony, if Congress wanted to take it, perhaps he could do a deposition in the UK.' Andrew harbours hopes to return to royal life after being stripped of public duties in the wake of the scandal over Ms Giuffre, who took her own life in April at the age of 41. His friendship with Epstein, who died aged 66 at a New York jail in August 2019 while awaiting a trial on sex trafficking of minors, brought shame on the Royal Family. The pair were pictured together in 2010 strolling through Central Park, after Epstein's 2008 conviction for procuring girls for sex. Epstein's ex-girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell is serving a 20-year jail sentence in the US after being convicted in 2021 of helping him find girls for sex. The fallout from the Epstein scandal has caused a rift among supporters of Donald Trump. The US President recently reneged on his election campaign vow to release files on the sex offender. It came after Attorney General Pam Bondi even boasted the documents were 'on her desk', only for the Department of Justice to later claim no such papers exist. The decision not to release the files followed Mr Trump's one-time best pal Elon Musk claiming the President's name appears in them. Trump had a close friendship with Epstein spanning more than three decades. The pair were pictured in 2000 with the then-businessman's future wife Melania and Maxwell.

Hackers threaten to leak 'top-secret' data after major cyberattack on French military

Hackers have released 30 gigabytes of data and threatened to leak more sensitive military information Cyber criminals claiming to have launched a devastating attack against French naval powerhouse Naval Group have released 30 gigabytes of classified material, whilst threatening to expose further critical military secrets. ‌ The French military shipbuilder Naval Group, renowned for crafting submarines and frigates, has dismissed the hacking allegations, confirming it had "immediately launched technical investigations" after sensitive material appeared online. ‌ The purported data breach allegedly contains classified intelligence regarding the NATO ally's nuclear submarine fleet. ‌ State-owned Naval Group manufactures France's Suffren-class submarines - nuclear-powered and nuclear-armed attack vessels designed for anti-surface and anti-submarine operations, ground strikes, and specialist missions. Boasting a heritage spanning 400 years back to Louis XIII's reign, Naval Group also constructed the French Navy's flagship and only operational aircraft carrier, the Charles de Gaulle, reports the Express. Writing on a dark web platform, the hackers claimed possession of "top-secret classified" intelligence on "submarines and frigates", issuing the firm a 72-hour ultimatum to acknowledge the breach, whilst alleging their cache includes source code for submarine weapons systems. ‌ Around 30GB of material was published by the digital criminals, though they insist they possess far more intelligence at their disposal - potentially one terabyte of documents. Naval Group maintained there had been "no intrusion into our IT environments", stating it was the victim of a "reputational attack". As the largest shipbuilder in France, the company, which is nearly two-thirds owned by the French government, boasts a workforce of over 15,000 and generates revenues exceeding €4.4bn. "Naval Group has noticed being the target of a reputational attack with the claim of a cyber-malice act. We immediately launched technical investigations," a spokesperson commented. "All teams and resources are currently mobilised to analyse and verify the authenticity, origin and ownership of the data as quickly as possible. "At this stage, no intrusion into our IT environments has been detected and there has been no impact on our activities." Data breaches have become a global issue, with both commercial entities and governmental bodies succumbing to cyber attacks. Just last week, Microsoft acknowledged that a July software update failed to completely rectify a couple of vulnerabilities, leaving SharePoint servers susceptible to hackers who could remotely execute code, an issue attributed to Chinese "threat actors". In another incident, the US National Nuclear Security Administration, which oversees America's nuclear weapons, was recently compromised but maintains that no sensitive information was accessed.

The gang, suspected of laundering £4 billion, had been under surveillance for two and a half years - but police never expected to find a giant plush toy among their illicit haul. Hong Kong police launched a large-scale raid on Tuesday, writing in a post on X: "When the time was ripe - the HKPF mounted the territory-wide anti-triad 'Operation HIDDENARROW' on July 29, 2025." The force reportedly seized €780,000 in cash, 11,000 bottles of wine, luxury watches, gold and a 5ft2 Labubu doll. The figure is said to be rare - one of fifteen of its kind in the world. A similar piece went under the hammer in Beijing in June for around £113,000. As many as 82 suspects were reportedly arrested during the operation - 55 men and 27 women, ranging in age from 19 to 78. Among them was the alleged 44-year-old ringleader. He is suspected of running the operation and involving friends and family in the money laundering scheme. Police added on X: "The ringleader manipulated his family & friends as well as the members of his gang into laundering the crime proceeds via calculated means." They listed this means as "continuously laundering the illicit funds via a trust company" and "committing #LoanFraud - using some seemingly lawful import trades as fronts." Dramatic moment crowds join massive queue to grab viral Labubu dolls as latest doll craze sweeps across the world The gang's funds came from prostitution, drug trafficking and illegal gambling, according to police. Police said they froze assets worth around £115 million. It's still unclear whether the criminal group was banking on the Labubu doll's value rising or simply fans of the character. It's also uncertain if the toy is genuine or a fake. Labubus have taken the internet by storm - with Chinese toymaker Pop Mart's valuation skyrocketing to £31.6bn. The cult collectable dolls have been spotted dangling from the designer bags of Rihanna, Kim Kardashian and David Beckham. Former England football captain David Beckham revealed that his daughter Harper, 13, had bought him one, showing off a snap of a rare 'secret' edition character. Kim Kardashian posted a shot of her collection, while former Love Island star Olivia even had a Labubu-themed birthday party. What is the Labubu doll craze? LABUBU is a brand of plushies designed by Hong Kong-born artist Kasing Lung. The brand made its debut in 2015, but skyrocketed in global popularity after hitting Pop Mart shelves in 2019. Pop Mart is a Chinese toy retailer, known for its collectable designer models that are often sold in a blind box format. The company has a stock market value of over £31.6bn. After mammoth success overseas, the Labubu craze has made its way to the UK. The first three months of 2025 were wildly successful for the brand, with Brits searching high and low to nab one of the quirky figurines. In June, Labubu sales in the US went up by 5,000% compared to the year before, according to estimates from equity research firm M Science. But Labubu's popularity has led to a rise in counterfeits - sometimes referred to as Lafufu dolls.
