Jim Gazzolo column: Managing with a deft hand

When last season ended, James Landreneau said he wasn't sure what to expect.
Shocked with a pair of losses in the Southland Conference softball tournament, Landreneau's Cowgirls didn't even make it to the title game.
McNeese State's run of NCAA Tournament appearances was over at three.
More than that, Landreneau's club was losing much of the talent that had taken it to within an out of a super regional the year before.
A surprise decision not to play by the team's leading home run hitter in the fall proved another speed bump. Another setback was an injury to last season's Freshman of the Year, Moss Bluff's Alexis Dibbley.
For the first time since the turn of the century, McNeese softball had more questions than answers as midseason approached.
'I wasn't sure how good we would be,' Landreneau said. 'I know we had talent, but I also knew we were young. You never know how young players react under pressure.'
Landreneau found out the hard way as McNeese struggled early. Twenty-seven games into the season, the Cowgirls stood at 14-13.
'I knew I was going to have to be patient with this group, and that isn't easy for me,' he admitted.
McNeese lost is first SLC series as Lamar took two of three.
'We weren't playing good softball for a long time,' Landreneau said. 'We had to mature as a team.'
His patience paid off when games mattered most.
After a run-rule loss to open a crucial series at Southeastern Louisiana, McNeese found itself three games out of first place behind the Lions. While Landreneau might have been ready to trash the locker room in rage, he instead saw his players take over and convene a meeting in the outfield after the loss.
What followed was a completely different club.
McNeese won the second game that day and took the series 24 hours later, reducing the SELA lead back to one game. Since then, the Cowgirls have won 17 of 18, losing only to nationally LSU in Baton Rouge.
'We just came together and said this is not how we want to go out,' senior shortstop Reese Reyna said. 'It was time for the players to speak up. Nothing coach could have said would have been different. He got us here; it was up to us to finish.'
Led by two freshmen pitchers and six new players on the field, the Cowgirls did what they had done for the previous three years: win the SLC regular-season championship.
They also won three consecutive games in the postseason by way of walk-off to advance to the title series against the very same Southeastern team. The one difference is that this series will be played at home.
The three walk-offs have come in three quite different ways. First, an actual walk forced in the winning run. Then, a single up the middle and finally, a two-run homer.
However, it's how Landreneau, who won his fourth league Coach of the Year award, maneuvered this group through a most impressive and really tough start. In doing so, he got his team to 40 wins for a fourth consecutive year, something nobody would have seen coming six weeks ago.
'What I'm most proud of is how these players took control of the team,' Landreneau said. 'It's always better when the players take the leadership role and that's what this team has done.'
And while the season may be far from over, it's likely Landreneau's personal best with the Cowgirls.
'I don't know about that, but I do like who we have grown and become a team,' he said. 'You have to credit the players and what they have done.'
And they don't believe they are finished.

Texas A&M is a finalist to land elite 2026 4-star SF out of Corpus Christi (TX)

Texas A&M's basketball program is under new management, as the 2025-2026 season will feature head coach Bucky McMillan leading the Aggies. This marks a drastic change from the last three seasons under Buzz Williams, as the program's all-time leading scorer, Wade Taylor IV, has also departed. However, change was needed after six seasons with Williams at the helm, who, while producing three consecutive NCAA Tournament teams, never advanced past the Round of 32. In contrast, Texas A&M has never advanced past the Sweet 16 throughout the NCAA Tournament's existence. This offseason, returning just one player in redshirt freshman forward Chris McDermott, McMillan added 12 players from the transfer portal, including veteran guard Pop Isaacs and former Indiana forward Mackenzie Mgbako. While McMillan is looking to add two more players to reach the 15-player threshold, this roster is talented enough to compete for a postseason bid. On the recruiting trail, McMillan has yet to land a 2026 commit, but is now a finalist for one of the top small forward prospects in the cycle, as four-star Billy White III, who also included Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Kansas, TCU, Stanford, Maryland, LSU, Virginia, and SMU in his top 10 program list. During his 2024-2025 junior season at Veterans Memorial in Corpus Christi (TX), White averaged 18.8 points, 9.4 rebounds, and 2.7 assists per game, while leading his team to a 39-1 record. His shooting ability, combined with impressive defense and rebounding makes him a borderline five-star prospect with an extremely high ceiling. While he has official visits lined up with six of his ten finalists, it's a positive development that Texas A&M is still on his radar heading into the fall. According to 247Sports, White is currently positioned as the 33rd-ranked prospect in the cycle, the 14th-ranked small forward, and the 4th-ranked prospect in Texas. 2025 WNBA MVP, DPOY, MIP Odds: Betting, Futures, Predictions including Collier, Clark, Thomas

The second-half of the WNBA season is set to tip off July 22 and with a five-game slate, there's no better time to take a look at the updated races for Most Valuable Player, Defensive Player of the Year and Most Improved Player. WNBA MVP Ladder: The MVP race isn't nearly as over as the Rookie of the Year race (Paige Bueckers isn't even listed at most places), but there is still time for Alyssa Thomas (+700), Breanna Stewart (+2000), A'ja Wilson (+6000), or Caitlin Clark (+7000) to make up ground — but they'll need help. Barring a setback or injury in the second half, Napheesa Collier (-700) has a significant lead over the field. Collier put up a phenomenal first half averages of 23.1 points (1st), 7.6 rebounds (10th), 3.3 assists (30th), 1.8 steals (4th), and 1.6 blocks (4th) per game on 51/34/94 shooting splits! Anything close to that in the second half of the year seals the deal for Collier, especially after her All-Star MVP. WNBA DPOY Ladder: There's value on A'ja Wilson (+250) given her insane on-and-off the court splits, while Napheesa Collier (+350) attempts to become the fifth player since 2007 (A'ja Wilson, Lauren Jackson, Lisa Leslie, Sheryl Swoopes) to win MVP and DPOY in the same season. Gabby Williams (+400) entered the break leading the league in steals per game (2.4) by a half-steal per contest, while Alanna Smith's (+500) 2.2 blocks per game was second behind Wilson (2.4). The battle for DPOY will be a tight one that could come down to the final game or two of the season. There are four to five viable options to bet right now, but no clear favorite. WNBA MIP Ladder: Besides Coach of the Year, Most Improved Player might be the toughest market to handicap. Golden State's Kayla Thornton (+400) and Veronica Burton (+350) lead the market at most shops, while Washington's Brittney Sykes (+650), Los Angeles' Azura Stevens (+550), Phoenix's Sami Whitcomb (+950), plus Seattle' Erica Wheeler (+750) and Gabby Wiliams (+1200). To be honest, Atlanta's Allisha Gray (+1500) even has a case here. It's going to take another two to three weeks for some of the market to start tattletaling on itself and give us a clear favorite. I bet Thornton (+400) and Sykes (+250) earlier in the season, so those who are I am riding with so far. I'd say hold off and wait because no one has been a favorite for more than a few weeks or reached below +200 odds. Vaughn Dalzell's WNBA Futures Bets: 2 units: Stephanie White to win Coach of the Year (+115) 2 units: Minnesota Lynx to win Championship (+340) 2 units: A'ja Wilson to win MVP (+225) 2 units: Napheesa Collier to win MVP (+150) 0.5 unit: Napheesa Collier to win MVP (+300) 0.5 unit: Jonquel Jones to win DPOY (+3000) 0.5 unit: Angel Reese to win DPOY (+2000) 0.5 unit: Aliyah Boston to win DPOY (+3500) 0.5 unit: Kamila Cardoso to win DPOY (+5500) 0.5 unit: Kayla Thornton to win MIP (+400) 0.5 unit: Brittney Sykes to win MIP (+250) 0.5 unit: Aliyah Boston to win MIP (+1500) 0.5 unit: Kamila Cardoso to win MIP (+3000) 0.5 unit: Seattle Storm to win the Championship (+2500) Please bet responsibly.
