Bangladesh interim govt intensifies attacks against Awami League, social media pages may be blocked
The NCSA, in a letter, also requested the BTRC to ask platforms such as Meta (Facebook), X (formerly Twitter), YouTube, and TikTok, to block all social media handles linked to the ex-Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina – led party, according to The Daily Star.
The move comes after the government banned all activities of the Awami League and its affiliated organisations until the end of ongoing trials against its members at the International Crimes Tribunal.
Regarding the ban, the party earlier wrote on its X: 'The ban on Awami League is no isolated crackdown—it's a strategic erasure. Under Yunus's interim regime, the state is being re-engineered: opposition silenced, electoral history rewritten, and institutions reshaped to cement authoritarian control.'
In addition, the party has also accused the Mohammed Yunus government of sabotaging the country's economy, promoting rampant Islamisation, and destroying Bangladesh's socio-political structures, citing the deterioration of law and order, and the inability of the Yunus government to tackle the ongoing social instability.
Additionally, the Election Commission of Bangladesh has suspended the Awami League's registration as a political party, barring it from participating in the national polls.
The move comes as a severe blow to the country's history and its once secular-pluralistic socio-political fabric, as the Awami League is the country's oldest party, predating its very formation and also having led the 1971 Liberation War.

New York, Aug 1 (UNI) President Donald Trump has fired Dr. Erika McEntarfer, the commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics, accusing her, without evidence, of manipulating the monthly jobs reports for 'political purposes'. The BLS' monthly labour report on Friday showed that the US economy added only 73,000 jobs in July, far below expectations. It also sharply revised down the employment growth that had been previously reported in May and June – by a combined 258,000 jobs, reports CNN. After the revisions, the jobs report showed the weakest pace of hiring for any three-month period since the pandemic recession in 2020. 'In my opinion, today's Jobs Numbers were RIGGED in order to make the Republicans, and ME, look bad,' Trump said in a Truth Social post while calling the revisions a 'mistake'. Although the May and June jobs numbers were worse than initially believed, revisions are normal in this process. The BLS' initial monthly jobs estimates are often based on incomplete data, so they are revised twice after the initial report — followed by an annual revision every February. Additionally, BLS economists use a formula to smooth out jobs' numbers for seasonal variations and that can exacerbate revisions when they fall outside economists' expectations. 'McEntarfer said there were only 73,000 Jobs added (a shock!) but, more importantly, that a major mistake was made by them, 258,000 Jobs downward, in the prior two months,' Trump continued. 'Similar things happened in the first part of the year, always to the negative. The Economy is BOOMING under 'TRUMP.'' Trump said McEntarfer 'faked' the jobs numbers before the election to try to boost former Vice President Kamala Harris' chances in the 2024 presidential election. 'She will be replaced with someone much more competent and qualified. Important numbers like this must be fair and accurate, they can't be manipulated for political purposes,' Trump said on Truth Social Friday. Washington, Aug 1 (UNI) US President Donald Trump, in perhaps the most radical threat he could make, has deployed two nuclear submarines following a provocative tweet by former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev. Taking to his social media platform Truth Social, Trump wrote: 'Based on the highly provocative statements of the Former President of Russia, Dmitry Medvedev, who is now the Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, I have ordered two Nuclear Submarines to be positioned in the appropriate regions, just in case these foolish and inflammatory statements are more than just that. 'Words are very important, and can often lead to unintended consequences, I hope this will not be one of those instances. Thank you for your attention to this matter! Medvedev, who currently serves as deputy chairman of the Russian Security Council, has been locked in a battle of words with the US President, having mocked him for issuing 'ultimatums' to Moscow. This came after Trump set a new deadline for Russian President Vladimir Putin to bring the war to an end by August 8, which Putin has shown no signs of doing. Before that on Monday, Trump had set a "10 or 12" day deadline. Earlier in July he threatened Russia with severe tariffs targeting its oil and other exports if Putin did not end the war in 50 days. Medvedev accused Trump of playing "the ultimatum game with Russia" earlier this week, writing on X that 'Russia is not Iran or even Israel.' Comparing him to former US President Joe Biden, Medvedev added 'Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war. Not between Russia and Ukraine, but with his own country. Telangana Dy CM dedicates 1st unit of Yadadri Thermal Power Plant
Nalgonda, Aug 1 (UNI) Telangana Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka Mallu said the 4,000 MW Yadadri Thermal Power Plant will be fully dedicated to the nation by January next year. Speaking after dedicating the first 800 MW unit to the nation on Friday and laying the foundation stone for an integrated township at the project site, to be developed at a cost of Rs 970 crore, Bhatti Vikramarka termed the event 'historic' for meeting the state's power needs. He said the project was delayed for nearly two years due to the previous government's failure to secure environmental clearances, which increased costs significantly. 'After the present Congress government came to power, clearances were obtained in just two months, and two units totaling 1,600 MW were completed by setting weekly and monthly targets,' he explained. The Deputy CM announced that employees working at the remote site would be provided with world-class educational institutions, corporate-level medical facilities, and local welfare measures. Free education and healthcare will also be extended to local residents who cooperated in the project's construction, along with ambulance services and road development. He assured that those who gave up land for the project would receive jobs by August 15 and full rehabilitation and resettlement (R&R) benefits. Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy praised Bhatti Vikramarka for his dynamic supervision, stating that the Yadadri project, once stalled, is now progressing rapidly and will benefit the state's power supply within two years.
