Old guard dominates Sukhbir Badal's new team, none close to Majithia
Shiromani Akali Dal (Badal) president Sukhbir Singh Badal on Thursday unveiled the party's new organisational structure, appointing key office-bearers and reconstituting the 31-member Core Committee. The reshuffle, announced a day after senior leader Bikram Singh Majithia was arrested in a disproportionate assets case, has brought back several old faces, including leaders with whom Majithia has had open differences.
Balwinder Singh Bhunder has been appointed Secretary General, Daljit Singh Cheema as Secretary, and NK Sharma as Cashier. Sarabjit Singh Jhijhar will head the Youth Akali Dal, Hargobind Kaur the Istri Wing, and Ranbir Singh Rana Dhillon the Students Organisation of India (SOI).
Though projected as a fresh start, the reorganisation features few surprises, with most key positions filled by leaders from the previous set-up. Significantly, none of the appointees are known to be close confidants of Majithia, who remains a member of the Core Committee but appears politically isolated within the top leadership.
The 31-member Core Committee, led by Sukhbir, includes Balwinder Singh Bhunder, Harjinder Singh Dhami, Naresh Gujral, Parmjit Singh Sarna, Hira Singh Gabria, Gulzar Singh Ranike, Maheshinder Singh Grewal, Dr Daljit Singh Cheema, Janmeja Singh Sekhon, Sikander Singh Maluka, Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Manjit Singh GK, Sharanjit Singh Dhillon, Bikram Singh Majithia, Sucha Singh Langah, Gurbachan Singh Babehali, Lakhbir Singh Lodhinangal, NK Sharma, Mantar Singh Brar, Baldev Singh Khaira, SR Kler, Joginder Singh Jindu, Teerath Singh Mahla, Ranjit Singh Dhillon, Vardev Singh Mann, Gurpreet Singh Raju Khanna, Kamal Chaitly, Harpreet Singh Kotbhai, Sukhdeep Singh Sukar and Darbara Singh Guru.
Five ex-officio members were also named: Harcharan Singh Bains (Media Head), Sarabjit Singh Jhijhar (Youth Akali Dal President), Hargobind Kaur (Istri Wing President), Ranbir Singh Rana Dhillon (SOI President) and Arshdeep Singh Kler (Chief Spokesperson).
The timing of the organisational overhaul, coming just a day after Majithia's arrest, has drawn attention. Adding to the churn is an interview of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on a web channel widely seen as a SAD (B) mouthpiece, in which he spoke on drug smuggling, triggering buzz in political circles.
In a parallel development, the 'Recruitment Committee' formed by Sri Akal Takht Sahib held a meeting on Thursday with Akali Dal Waris Punjab De at the residence of Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh.
Members of the Bharti Committee, Bibi Satwant Kaur, Manpreet Singh Ayali, Santa Singh Umaidpuri, Gurpratap Singh Wadala and Iqbal Singh Jhunda, were present at the meeting, along with Daya Singh Lahoria. The five-member Akali Dal Waris Punjab team comprised Tarsem Singh, Faridkot MP Sarbjit Singh Khalsa, Amarjit Singh Banchri, Harbhajan Singh Tur and Surjit Singh Daulatpur.
Akali Dal Waris Punjab welcomed the committee's ongoing efforts to bring Panthic groups together. A joint statement issued after the meeting said both sides would coordinate with other factions committed to Sri Akal Takht Sahib to bring the Panth out of its current crisis and guide it towards progress.

AAP suspends Punjab MLA Kunwar Vijay for 5 years after he opposes arrest of SAD leader Bikram Singh Majithia
Days after the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA from Amritsar North in Punjab, Kunwar Vijay Pratap Singh, opposed the arrest of Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader and former minister Bikram Singh Majithia in a disproportionate assets case, the party's political affairs committee suspended him from the party for five years. The Punjab Vigilance Bureau on June 25 arrested Majithia after conducting a raid at his residence in Amritsar in a disproportionate assets case worth Rs 540 crore Kunwar Vijay shared a video of the raid showing Majithia's wife Ganieve Kaur protesting against the alleged high-handedness of VB sleuths. Kunwar Vijay, who is a former IPS officer, said, 'When Majithia ji was in jail, the Bhagwant Mann government neither conducted any interrogation nor sought his remand and eventually allowed him bail.' 'However, it is a question of a family's dignity now, it is the dignity of every family, whether one is a politician, actor, rich or poor, friend or foe. Conducting a raid at someone's house early in the morning is against ethics. Almost every government has misused the police and vigilance agencies for its own benefit, but the outcome has never been significant,' Kunwar Vijay said on social media. While pronouncing disciplinary action against Kunwar Vijay, the AAP has stated, 'Questioning the vigilance action against Vikram Majithia proved costly for Kunwar Vijay Pratap. It is the Mann government's clear message through this big decision that politics will not be tolerated in the campaign against drugs. Action against drugs is the party's ideology and whoever tries to create obstacles in it has no place in the party. The Aam Aadmi Party has suspended Kunwar Vijay Pratap from the party for five years. This is a decision of the Aam Aadmi Party's PAC (political affairs committee). He has been suspended for being involved in anti-party activities.' Kunwar Vijay had said he may have had political disagreements or ideological differences with Majithia, but when it came to principles, religion, and integrity, one should speak out. 'When Majithia sahib was in jail in a case registered during the Congress government, the Mann government did not seek any remand or conduct any questioning. Later, the state apparatus under Mann sahib even facilitated his bail.' He had also stated that the Punjab and Haryana High Court granted him bail on the grounds that if the police don't require someone for interrogation, keeping them in custody is against the law. 'I am trying to make a point here that when he was in custody, the government enabled his bail. Now, suddenly, notices are being issued to him, raids are being conducted at his house, and the privacy of his wife is being violated. I reiterate that I have an ideological disagreement with Majithia sahib. That will remain. This, however, is a matter of ethics and integrity,' he said.

Laundering of Rs 540 crore of ‘drug money': Majithia's conduct was doubtful, says former ED deputy director
Former deputy director of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) Niranjan Singh, who probed the alleged money laundering charges against former Punjab minister Bikram Singh Majithia and also recorded his statement in connection with the Jagdish Bhola drug-racket case before being transferred, on Saturday said the conduct of the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader in the entire case was 'doubtful.' This came a day after former Punjab director general of police (DGP) Siddharth Chattopadhyaya met a Vigilance Bureau team on Friday and shared his 'experience and knowledge' with its members regarding the drugs case registered against the former Akali minister in 2021. Singh, who appeared before the Vigilance Bureau in connection with their investigation into the alleged money laundering case against Majithia, said he had recorded his 'verbal statement' with the Bureau. 'Being with ED, I started the investigation in the case in 2013, and it went on till 2017. I was not able to complete that because I was transferred and promoted. I cannot reveal everything to the media as the investigation is pending. We gather a lot of evidence in financial investigations. I can just add that there is a doubtful conduct,' he said, referring to Majithia. The bureau on June 25 arrested Majithia in the case allegedly involving the laundering of Rs 540 crore of 'drug money'. The former Punjab minister was sent to a seven-day custody by a Mohali court on June 26. He also accused Majithia of getting him transferred out of Jalandhar when he was in the midst of the investigation. 'What the Punjab government is saying about linking drug money with disproportionate assets case, I have no link with that. There is no evidence of this link at this juncture. The investigation was delayed. The credit for the delayed investigation goes to Majithia. He got it done. I am saying this on record. I was transferred several times,' Singh said. 'The ED has a clear mandate: if an FIR is lodged under the NDPS Act case and recovery is made, then the agency enters into it and takes details about how crime money was generated, laundered and investigated. There were 102 accused, and they were investigated. I was not able to complete it. I had the support of the department for many years. When I summoned Majithia in 2014, I was transferred to Kolkata. The HC later cancelled this transfer. There was non-cooperation by the department after that, and some steps were taken by the authorities which do not go in favour of the investigation.' 'I told them that now I am retired. I have no documents. They can get copies of those documents from the ED. I will come and certify those,' Singh said. Recalling the case, he said, 'The initiation of investigation was done as a case of drugs. I investigated for the ED and submitted the status report to the high court. The HC examined the report and gave it to the STF. The STF examined it and gave its observation to the HC. The court then directed the Punjab government to take action, but the government did not take action.' He said the 2021 FIR was based on the status report filed by him and the STF. 'Now, the Vigilance is investigating the money laundering. Because the initiation of the investigation was done by me, they wanted me to come and help them. I can say the documents in both cases are the same. It is the same story and the same facts. The money laundering is linked. They have to do the investigation now,' Singh said. 'When we started the investigation, drug kingpin Jagdish Bhola's statement was recorded. Majithia's name is mentioned in his statement. Later, I investigated Bittu Aulakh. He, too, wrote his name. Bhola has been convicted. I got 17 accused convicted, and their illegal property was attached and confiscated. This case has the same ground. The guilty are behind bars,' Singh said. He said, 'The matter is still under investigation. Whatever is in the court and public domain, I can tell. Some people in contact with him were in Canada. We sought an investigation report about them from the Canadian government. The government never sent it to us. They were Satpreet Satta, Amrinder Singh Laddi, Parminder Singh Pindi and many others.' 'I have recorded statements in which his name figures. I have submitted the report to the court. Based on those statements only, 17 persons were convicted. That means the court agreed with my statements and evidence,' he said. He said, 'The challan was to be presented by the SIT, but they did not. I can only help whenever an agency seeks my help.' He said that the Vigilance had never contacted him earlier. 'I have given a verbal statement. The police have to record it. I gave the details of the Bhola drug case and what came into the investigations about Majithia. I had submitted the statements of Bhola and Aulakh in the trial court. The contents of their statement were required by the VB. I have told them about it.' 'I am neither in favour nor against anyone. I am only responsible for the investigation I have done. There is no politics as far as my investigation is concerned. There are many statements, there are revelations, and the accused has named him. Since the investigation is pending, it is not fair to say anything. The investigation is going on, and is live and in progress. It has not been closed,' he added.
