One month to negotiate: Anwar says US still values Malaysia ties amid looming 25pc tariff, hopes for talks before August deadline
The US had earlier this week announced a new tariff rate of 25 per cent which will take effect on August 1 on goods imported from Malaysia, and Anwar confirmed that he had discussed this matter with Rubio today.
'We raised the issue of tariffs by President Trump. He said that letter is a general letter but there is still one month's time to negotiate.
'And he knows Malaysia is the US' main trade partner in this region and he will give consideration and present our views,' Anwar said in an audio recording made available to the media.
Anwar said their discussion largely focused on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (Asean).
'The US still considers its relationship with Malaysia to be important and also wants to maintain and increase cooperation with Asean and Asean nations, and understands our stand to have good ties and trade with all countries.'
Anwar said Malaysia did not have to choose between its trade partners but could do business with all countries.
'While the US is an important trade partner, we will enhance our ties with China, Asean countries and other countries for the citizens' interest and for the nation's benefit.'
Malaysia is currently chairing Asean, which has 10 members.
Malaysia is also hosting the 58th Asean Foreign Ministers' Meeting from July 8 to July 11.
Rubio arrived here today as part of the US delegation for a series of Asean-led meetings, and was reported to be expected to hold talks with senior Malaysian officials including Anwar.

In a post on X, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said he will deliver a keynote address at the event, marking one year since the launch of the National Semiconductor Strategy (NSS). Chairing the third National Investment Council (MPN) meeting for 2025 today, he also detailed the results of the NSS after a year of implementation. 'The government continues to focus on strengthening the capabilities of the local semiconductor industry in support of the NSS, with various fiscal assistance programmes having been proposed and approved – reflecting the Madani Government's commitment to advancing the national semiconductor industry. 'During the meeting, I also emphasised the importance of the government strengthening its capacity to formulate responsive and data-driven policies to ensure that incoming investments yield long-term benefits for the country and its people,' said Anwar, who is also the finance minister. The NSS, launched on May 28 last year, aims to enhance Malaysia's position in the global semiconductor supply chain. Focus on SMEs to boost women in workforce, says TalentCorp official
The government plans to increase the female labour force participation rate to 60% by the end of the year. KUALA LUMPUR : A greater focus should be placed on small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) as part of efforts to increase the number of women in the workforce, says a Talent Corporation Malaysia Bhd (TalentCorp) official. TalentCorp's chief strategy officer Nazrul Aziz said it was necessary to further incentivise SMEs so that they would offer flexible working and caregiving arrangements to female employees. 'We have no issue with multinational corporations (MNCs) and GLCs. But for every 10 Malaysians, only three work for MNCs and GLCs. 'If we want to make a shift in the (labour market's) ecosystem, we need to focus on SMEs,' he said at a panel discussion on the World Bank's inclusive employment practices report launched here today. Nazrul spoke in agreement with human resources minister Steven Sim, who earlier highlighted the low participation rate in women's career comeback programmes. The TalentCorp official said SME employers needed to be further incentivised to support these programmes. 'We're providing tax incentives to companies that implement flexible working arrangements. 'But now, we have to focus more on SMEs, because MNCs and GLCs are already pretty much there (in supporting women's career comeback programmes),' he said. He added that so far, about 3,000 companies have participated in TalentCorp's advocacy programmes promoting flexible working arrangements. Former Women's Aid Organisation deputy executive director Yu Ren Chung said it was important to amend the Employment Act to outlaw discrimination against women during the hiring process. 'There's actually no law that prohibits companies from choosing not to hire someone because they might, for example, start a family. 'The Employment Act, right now, mostly covers employees, but there's no legal reason why it can't also tackle discrimination towards job seekers,' he said. Previously, World Bank economists had spoken about Malaysia's struggle to retain women in the workforce. The government's target is to increase the female labour force participation rate to 60% by the end of the year.

Anwar trying to address public dissatisfaction ahead of rally, says opposition
Acting Muda president Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz said her party will not stop members from attending Saturday's rally, while PAS information chief Fadhli Shaari said the RM100 cash payment will have no long-term impact. PETALING JAYA : Opposition members have criticised Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim over his announcement earlier today of the RM100 one-off cash aid for all Malaysians, calling it an attempt to address public dissatisfaction ahead of the anti-Anwar rally on Saturday. At a press conference at the Muda office today, acting party president Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz said the announcement gave the impression that Anwar was worried about the upcoming rally. 'All these announcements are being made to placate the people, but it's not working,' she said. Amira said while her party was not part of the rally's organising body, it would not stop its members from attending it. She also criticised chief secretary to the government Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar for warning civil servants not to attend the rally, saying public assembly was the right of all Malaysians under the Federal Constitution. 'If they do join the rally on Saturday, and action is taken against them, Muda is fully prepared to offer legal assistance for those being investigated for participating in the rally,' she said. Separately, PAS information chief Fadhli Shaari accused Anwar of 'urgently' announcing the RM100 aid, instead of in the lead-up to Budget 2026, to 'dampen rising public anger'. 'Only the RM100 aid for all adult Malaysians (worth a total of RM2 billion) seemed appealing. Other than that, it was just a typical announcement that could have been made anytime,' he said in a Facebook post. Fadhli said the RM2 billion in cash aid 'means nothing compared with the RM7.5 billion saved from the targeted diesel subsidies'. 'There's no long-term impact. It was just a typical announcement. We march, no matter what! See you in Kuala Lumpur on July 26,' he said. In a special telecast this morning, Anwar said the cash aid was for all Malaysians aged 18 and above under the Sumbangan Asas Rahmah aid initiative. He said the one-off payment, which would be channelled through the MyKad, was in conjunction with the National Day celebration and could be used between Aug 31 and Dec 31 to purchase basic necessities from over 4,100 outlets.
