Veteran Addeen downs Joachim in all-Malaysian final

KUALA LUMPUR: Veteran Addeen Idrakie lived up to his top billing by clinching the Morrinsville Open title in New Zealand on Saturday.
The world No. 104 battled past Joachim Chuah (world No. 175) in an all-Malaysian final, winning 7-11, 11-9, 9-11, 11-8, 11-4.
It was the 31-year-old's first title since lifting the North Coast Open in Australia in 2023.
Addeen, returning from a five-month injury layoff due to a right shoulder problem, had to dig deep throughout the tournament.
In the semi-finals, he overcame a stern test from Japan's Naoki Hayashi, prevailing 11-6, 13-11, 6-11, 9-11, 11-5.
Third seed Joachim, meanwhile, pulled off an upset against Hong Kong's second seed Matthew Lai, winning 13-11, 11-13, 16-14, 11-8.
Addeen, who was runner-up at the PSNS President's Trophy in Seremban last month, was thrilled to get back to winning ways.
"It was a hard-fought match against Joachim. I really had to dig deep to win it in 80 minutes," he said.
"Although I'm already 31, I have no plans to retire. I'm targeting another four years in the game.
"This win has really boosted my confidence. I'm now looking forward to another good outing at next week's Victorian Open in Australia.

Winger wins hearts

With his trademark smile, explosive speed, and unrelenting tenacity, the Timor Leste international and team captain has won over hearts wherever he goes. From Betong, Mukah, Bintulu, Sibu and with their final stop in Miri over the last week, the 27-year-old winger has been nothing short of electrifying, dazzling fans and leaving defenders chasing shadows. Pedro's impact has been so profound that Kuching City's social media channels have been flooded with praise. Supporters have affectionately dubbed him a 'pace machine'. Even Pedro is thoroughly enjoying himself. 'Coach Aidil (Sharin) hasn't given me a fixed position in attack, he just wants me to enjoy my football,' said Pedro, smiling as always. 'That freedom has helped me find my rhythm, and I just want to keep building on that momentum.' Pedro was at the centre of a mini transfer tug-of-war, with Kuala Lumpur initially on the brink of signing him, only for Kuching to swoop in and land the prized winger. That moment now looks like a masterstroke, as fans are already chanting his name in the stands and sharing photos of his blistering runs online. Standing at 1.70m, Pedro brings more than just flair. He has featured 24 times for Timor Leste, scoring eight goals, and came to Kuching City after a successful stint with Cambodian Premier League outfit Angkor Tiger, where he notched seven goals and six assists in 26 matches. His journey through South-East Asian football with spells in Indonesia, Cambodia, and his native Timor Leste has shaped him into a seasoned attacker. Now, he's determined to make his mark in Malaysian football, with the full support of his new club and an ever-growing legion of fans. 'I want to give everything I have to Kuching. Our goal is to finish in the top five this season, and I'll do my best to contribute,' said Pedro. 'But more importantly, I want to repay the love the fans have shown me. Life in Kuching has been amazing, and this tour has opened my eyes to the warmth and unity of Sarawakians.' Asked about the transfer drama that almost took him to Kuala Lumpur, Pedro revealed it was Aidil who tipped the scales. 'I had a great conversation with coach Aidil before signing. He shared his vision and the club's ambitions, and it just felt right. That's why I chose Kuching and I'm so glad I did.' From the sounds of it and the cheers in every district, the people of Sarawak are just as glad. Pedro isn't just a new signing. He's already one of their own.

Shuttlers' dreams rise at Asian Juniors but coach keeps them on guard

PETALING JAYA: The recent fine performances of the junior shuttlers has raised hopes for a positive outing in the Asian Junior Championships but national junior doubles coach Pang Cheh Chang is remaining cautious of his charges' chances in the tournament starting on Friday in Solo, Indonesia. Girls' doubles pair Dania Sofea Zaidi-Low Zi Yu and mixed doubles duo Loh Ziheng-Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan especially are heading into the Asian meet on a high after capturing titles in the Malaysian Junior International Challenge in Perlis last week. Dania-Zi Yu, who bagged silver in the world junior meet last year, are Malaysia's best bets for gold in Solo while Ziheng-Noraqilah have also enhanced their chances for at least a medal with their positive showing at home. Malaysia's other medal hopefuls are likely to be Dania and Datu Anif Asrah in the mixed doubles and Ziheng-Tan Zhi Yang in the boys' doubles after both pairs finished runners-up in Perlis. Cheh Chang though believes his charges will face a tougher challenge in the Asian meet due to the presence of the likes of China, Japan and South Korea, who did not compete in the Malaysian tourney. 'Overall, our players' performances have been okay so far but we haven't met teams like China, Korea, Japan, India and Taiwan,' said Cheh Chang. 'The most important part for us is preparation and team work. We have to go step by step.' Dania-Zi Yu and their teammates will first compete in the mixed team event which will be held from July 18-22 before turning their attentions to the individual event from July 23-27. In the mixed team competition, Malaysia have been placed in Group B along with Indonesia, Singapore, Macau and Myanmar. Only the top two teams in the group will progress to the quarter-finals. In last year's edition, Malaysia won a silver through Aaron Tai-Kang Khai Xing (boys' doubles) while Siti Zulaikha Azmi (girls' singles), Ong Xin Yee-Carmen Ting (girls' doubles) and mixed team all contributed bronze medals.
