TIME on the soccer field as a player often comes down to a ticking clock. Malukazi sporting legend, Ayoob Adam, 74, however, continues to play the game he loves and foster new generations of players. He recently received the Unsung Heroes award and was featured in two pages of Unsung Heroes Volume 3 for his contributions to sport and community service.

Adam's story began in Malukazi where he was born and raised. His love for soccer emerged in school and he quickly distinguished himself as a talented and disciplined player.
His passion for soccer led him to play for Protea Power at age 14, where he honed integral values of teamwork and perseverance. He represented Clairwood and Natal High Schools and was selected for the Mid-South Coast and Isipingo District Football Association (IDFA), serving as captain during his 10th year with the IDFA Southern Natal Soccer Board.
While the talent was clearly there, he made the tough choice to forgo a professional contract due to financial constraints. His love for sport never diminished, though, and he is still playing and coaching in the Isipingo Junior Soccer Academy after three decades. There, he keeps fit and imparts his wisdom to flourishing football talents.
He plays for Isipingo Soccer Veterans in the golden oldies league and plays matches for the over-60 side.
He said that he maintains his fitness through training and coaching children at the academy.

'I play and exercise with them. God willing, I plan to keep this up for as long as I can,' said Adam. He encouraged young players to embrace the outdoors and play sport.
'Your mind and body will thank you. It is not just about staying fit. It is about building friendships, learning discipline, and the joy of pushing your limits while having fun. Balance screen time with active play,' he advised.
Outside of sport, Adam has dedicated his life to uplifting his community. He was a founding member of the Malukazi Feeding Scheme, through which he ensures food security for vulnerable families. He converted part of his family's property into a clinic to provide much-needed healthcare to his community. Adam also played a pivotal role in establishing a school in Malukazi to promote fair access to education.

'Say it to my face': Herschelle Gibbs claps back at criticism

Retired Protea Herschelle Gibbs has clapped back at criticism of his outspoken social media posts as well as controversial past, which includes allegations of doping, match-fing and that 2010 bombshell memoir. The 51-year-old has often taken jabs at the South African cricket team, particularly captain Temba Bavuma. On his X account, Herschelle Gibbs courted controversy when he seemingly poked fun at International Cricket Council (ICC) Chairman Jay Shah's praise for the debut of a new four-day series tournament. The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy Series between England and India recently ended in a draw. 'You guys wanted test cricket to be 4 days', he posted alongside several laughing emojis. His post saw many irked cricket fans – particularly from India – bring up his controversial career, which included allegations of match-fixing and doping. 'Were you born?' Herschelle Gibbs clapped back at one X user. 'Did you even play international cricket?' he asked another. The 51-year-old's roasts became more personal. 'Shame, did your boyfriend leave you for another woman?' he asked one critic. To another, he shamelessly posted: 'Tell your mom to get off the street corners'. Meanwhile, in a video posted by sports betting agency 10Bet, Herschel Gibbs read out a series of 'mean tweets' about it. 'Next time, say it to my face', the caption read. View this post on Instagram A post shared by 10bet South Africa (@10betza) In 2010, Herschelle Gibbs released his bombshell autobiography To The Point, detailing his life in the limelight as a Protea player. In it, he detailed his sexcapades with dozens of cricket groupies. One particular 'group sex session' took place at Adelaide Hilton Hotel during the 1997/199 Proteas tour. He wrote: 'It was one fat party from mid-evening to the next afternoon. I enjoyed the company of let's say, more than one woman. 'The girls were really up for it .. You picked a girl up (in the hotel's bar), took her upstairs to your room, and afterwards both of you would go back downstairs and you'd go and chat to someone else. It was a phenomenal night.' Herschelle Gibbs' autobiography 'To The Point'. Of his Australian groupies, he said: 'It was like going shopping. From the first day, women were almost falling into our laps virtually every night. Australian women, I can tell you, are not afraid to speak their minds and make it crystal clear what they're after. Herschelle Gibbs' memoir also touched on his short stint in rehab over alcohol and drug abuse, and a six-month ban over his 2000 match-fixing scandal. Hope School learner represents SA at World Boccia Championships in Egypt

In a powerful display of perseverance and passion, Sheena Nonhlanhla Hwami, a learner at Hope School in Westcliff, proudly represented South Africa at the World Boccia Africa Regional Championships in Cairo, Egypt, held from July 29 to August 3. Read more: Hope School learner competes for SA at World Wheelchair Basketball Championship Boccia (pronounced bot-cha) is a precision ball sport designed for athletes with severe physical disabilities. Played indoors on a smooth court, the game challenges players to throw or roll coloured balls as close as possible to a small white ball, the jack. It demands not only physical control but also sharp strategy and focus. Players are grouped into classes BC1 to BC4, with Sheena competing in the BC3 category, which includes athletes who use assistive devices to play. Born with muscular dystrophy, Sheena has never let her condition define her. She first encountered boccia in primary school, though she admits it took time to fully grasp the rules and spirit of the game. It was only in high school that her passion truly took root. 'It wasn't easy at all,' she shared. 'But determination, consistency, and hard work became my priorities. This accomplishment is the result of that effort. I am truly grateful for the opportunities I have been given and for the words of encouragement: 'Never give up. You never know how far you can go; just keep pushing forward.' At the Cairo championships, Sheena made her international debut. Despite a tough opening match against fellow South African Elanza Jordaan, which ended in a loss, Sheena bounced back with impressive composure. In her second game, she secured a narrow but inspiring 3–2 win over Tunisia's Ben Laou Lina. 'Reaching the point where I could represent my country was a proud moment for me,' said Sheena. 'The fact that I could do it again reminded me of what I'm capable of.' Sheena's journey is just beginning, but her spirit and success already speak volumes. In a world where ability is often defined by expectation, she continues to move beyond limits, one ball at a time. Image: orlandopirates/Instagram The 23-year-old Bafana winger delivered immediate impact at Orlando Stadium, scoring the opening goal and earning a penalty that led to the second in a 2–0 win over his former club, Polokwane City. The new Orlando Pirates number 12's performance earned him the Man of the Match award and won over the Buccaneers' faithful instantly. Sundowns to make big announcements According to Ouaddou, Appollis is a joy to watch with his attacking instincts, but his development is far from complete. 'I played against Appollis when I was with my previous club, so I know his qualities and I won't change him,' said the Moroccan coach via Kick Off . 'But as a former professional and now as a coach, my job is to help him reach the highest level. That means disciplining him and giving him tactical education. Released Orlando Pirates striker joining fourth PSL club? 'We don't use him only for transitions. He must come between the lines, make deep runs, switch sides—he has to be a dynamic player. Not one who waits out wide for the ball,' added the Orlando Pirates mentor.
