Brave Co Down are undone as Manchester United set up SuperCup NI Premier Final clash with Southampton

Emmanuel Ziro's goal eight minutes into the second half secured a 1-0 win for United and broke the hearts of a brave County Down side, who were tough to break down and a match for the boys from Old Trafford in spells throughout the game.
It will be an all-English battle in the decider at Coleraine Showgrounds (8pm) after Southampton brushed off the challenge of Hamiilton Academicals, winning 4-1.
United have won the Premier tournament five times this century, as well as one Junior title and given that record, plus a previous history beyond the 21st century, there will be a level of expectation on them to triumph again.
'If these lads are going to play for Manchester United they are going to have to deal with pressure so it's really nice practice for them,' said United coach Tom Curtis.
'This tournament is a real test for the boys against really well organised and well motivated teams and it's a fantastic experience for everybody.'
United were patient in their approach throughout the game, happy to retain the ball, rotate possession and probe for openings when they may be found.
That meant there wasn't a lot for Down goalkeeper Max Sykes to do, particularly in the opening stages and also in general throughout the game.
In contrast Down were aggressive in trying to win the ball back and keen to attacking quickly when the did have the ball.
That contrast was evident when Down's Stephen Kelly had the first real chance of the game with a shot that sailed just over the bar before United could muster anything of note.
That quickly changed when Samuel O'Brien slipped a pass wide to Edson DeJonge-Seiros on the left and Sykes did well to save.
Kelly's pace was a major asset to Down when they got the chance to break and when he got a run on the United defence and there was a lucky escape for United when he fed Zak Magowa, only for the ball to get stuck under the striker's feet..
The longer the game went on the more likely it looked that one goal would settle it and that's how it turned out.
Abdoulaye Douka Nkoto, who lit up the tournament with two beautifully taken goals against Rangers on Tuesday night, again showed his quality with a superb through ball that split the defence, sending Ziro through one-on-one with Sykes and he rolled the ball home from 10 yards out.
It was hard on Down who had been strong, disciplined and had coped with much of what United had to offer up to that stage and they can be proud of the performances that got them to the Semi-Final stage.
George Robinson netted a first-half hat-trick in Southampton's victory over Hamilton. Archie Lovatt added a third as the Saints all but wrapped up the win by half time. Josh Carson netted a consolation for the Scots.
Intercontinental beat Rangers 2-1 to take their place in the Globe Final, where they will meet Ichifuna, who beat Mexican side Tigres 1-0.
Brighton won a penalty shoot-out against County Tyrone after a 0-0 draw to take their place in the Vase Final, where they will play County Londonderry after their 3-2 win against AFC Bournemouth.
County Antrim are in the Bowl Final after a 3-1 win over County Fermanagh and that will be a local affair after County Armagh won 2-1 against West Cork Academy.
County Armagh boss Darragh Peden says his boys are having fun all the way to the Junior Final
Darragh Peden's 'fun and enjoyment' approach has put County Armagh Juniors one step away from the ultimate joy at the SuperCup NI.
An all-county Final against County Antrim, who beat St Patrick's Athletic 3-0, awaits after a thrilling 5-4 win over Celtic and if the decider has even half the excitement then fans are in for a real treat.
Armagh conceded their first goal of the tournament just a minute into the game, but 25 minutes later they were 4-1 up after a terrific response.
Ethan Connolly benefited from Alfie Davidson's tenacity in chasing the ball down to equalise 10 minutes after falling behind, Will Davison swept home when the ball was delivered across the box five minutes later and it was Davidson himself who fired a thunderbolt from the edge of the box to make it 3-1.
Armagh's momentum built further when Eogham Mallon scored from the penalty spot after he had been fouled. Even after Flynn Watson got one back for Celtic, Davidson again riffled home a shot from distance to keep Armagh three goals to the good.
When Henry Atkinson's deflected shot found the net on the stroke of half-time and Zion Pullan headed home from a free kick early in the second-half to bring Celtic back to within one goal, the game really was on a knife edge.
Mallon missed from the spot when presented with a chance to finally kill off the Scottish giants' challenge and it was the attitude of his players throughout a testing final 20 minutes that impressed Peden as much as anything else.
'I set the camp up to make sure that for Juniors first of all it was going to be fun and enjoyment and a balance between hopefully winning some football matches, which brings enjoyment,' said Peden. 'I'm really pleased with the second-half because we were asked a real question against a top team and ground out a result. Sometimes that's what you need to do.
'At 1-0 down, they had to show character and they hadn't really been served that up because we hadn't conceded a goal previously, but good gutsy characters, passing tests and can be better.'
Antrim will now aim to emulate their counterparts from 2017 and 2018, who became the first county team to win the Junior competition, after their Premier team had done so in 2015.
Michael Mulholland continued his goalscoring streak with the opener in their win over St Pat's with another superb finish and two goals from Seanan Wright secured their passage to the Final.
Blackburn Rovers will contest the Globe decider after a 5-2 victory over Bohemians.
They will face County Down, who had a superb 3-0 win over Tottenham Hotspur.
County Tyrone reached the Vase Final with a 2-0 win over County Fermanagh and they will meet County Londonderry, who had a 2-1 win over West Ham United.
The Bowl decider will be an all-English affair between Crewe Alexandra and Charlton Athletic. Crewe beat Chicago City 3-2, while Charlton won 2-1 against Plymouth Argyle.
Linfield bidding to put last year's Minor Final heartache behind them after shocking Blackburn Rovers in last four
Linfield will aim to go one better than 2024 after completing a hugely dramatic comeback before beating Blackburn Rovers on penalties to reach the SuperCup NI Minor Final.
The Blues, who lost last year's decider to Crusaders, face Belfast rivals Cliftonville in Friday's Coleraine Showgrounds showpiece (11am), as the Reds too booked their place with a 7-6 shootout win over Shamrock Rovers after a 1-1 draw.
A display of character brought Linfield level after falling 2-0 down before winning 7-6 on penalties, with only one kick missed.
Divine Shitu shot across goal to put Blackburn ahead in the 22nd minute after Jonas Henderson had made a couple of impressive early saves. When Jacob Woods netted after a shot had come off the bar four minutes later, Blackburn looked in control.
Linfield have faced adversity throughout the tournament, losing both Lucas Moore and Aaron Duffy to broken arms early in the week before Ronan Laverty pulled out before kick-off, and reacted with great maturity.
They halved the deficit 11 minutes into the second period when Blackburn goalkeeper Jacob Lumor failed to deal with Cruz O'Neill's corner — the ball just about crossing the line — and that swung the momentum in Linfield's favour.
With just a couple of minutes to go, Olly Roney sent the ball deep into the Rovers half, O'Neill crossed low into the box and Oliver Prenter hit what was a deserved equaliser.
The composure of Prenter, O'Neill, Noah Clarke, Sam DeLargy Jake Booth, Zayne Leckey and Roney as they scored from the spot was impressive for such young players and when the unfortunate Teddy Simpson saw his kick saved superbly by Henderson, the celebrations began.
'That was heart, that was desire, that was energy and they showed real resilience because other teams against an opposition like that with real quality could lie down, get beaten by four or five goals,' said Linfield coach Scott Boyd.
'I think courage is the word that I'll use the rest of the day, because we were on the ropes first-half and they left everything out there.'
Coleraine and Leeds United will meet in the Final of the Globe competition after both had 3-0 Semi-Final wins, the Bannsiders beating Kilmarnock while Leeds defeated Ballymena United.
Loughgall were 5-0 winners over Crusaders to reach the Vase decider, where they will play Al Jazira Club, who defeated Shankill Juniors 3-1.
IDA Bermuda will take on Surf Select for the Bowl after a 1-0 win over Glenavon. The Americans were also 1-0 winners, against Ross County.
Shamrock Rovers beat Brighton 3-2 to win the Girls Premier tournament. Manchester United beat Aston Villa to win the Globe, while Northern Ireland were 4-1 winners over Surf Select in the Vase decider.
United were also victorious in the Girls Junior tournament, beating Surf Select 3-0. Larne won the Globe competition thanks to a 5-4 victory over Kilmarnock, while FC United were 5-1 winners over Crusaders to win the Vase.

With Bruno operating in a rotating attacking trident alongside new recruits Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha, there was plenty to be excited about when United were on the ball. Yet the defensive deficiencies that undermined Ruben Amorim's team last season resurfaced once again in the magnificent Mercedes-Benz Stadium, problems that HAVE to be addressed if United are to really start moving in the right direction. Manuel Ugarte's shocker was punished by Iliman Ndiaye as Everton looked much more like a David Moyes side for the first time in the USA. While United will surely not be short of goals this season, this was a warning that they may be no better equipped to stop shipping them at the other end. Amorim can instil all the culture, unity and spirit in the world. Yet if you have a midfield that feels more like a doughnut than a wall - with a big hole in the middle - there is only one outcome. SunSport's chief reporter Martin Lipton previews the season ahead for Man Utd... with confidence in the air Cunha, still looking for his first United goal, could have had it twice in the opening 16 minutes. First the Brazilian, found by the fast-raiding Amad Diallo and surging into the box, prodded across the face of goal with the outside of his left boot, before another half-chance was blocked. In between, though, Everton should have been in front, with right-back Jake O'Brien hitting the post when Altir Bayindor patted a James Garner free-kick straight into his path. United were dangerous in transition and went in front on 18 minutes - although it seemed a debatable penalty decision. All-action Mbeumo's excellent first time reverse sent Diallo scampering into the box and when his attempted ball inside came back to him off James Tarkowski, he made the most of a grasp of his shirt shoulder to go down. Thomas Bramhall, equipped with Ref Cam for the TV viewers, pointed instantly to the spot, much to Tarkowski's disbelief. It was one that a VAR official might have taken a long look at but with that not in operation in the Summer Series, Fernandes stepped up to find the bottom corner as Jordan Pickford was rooted. Indeed, when Kobbie Mainoo made a horlicks of Garner's long throw, O'Brien could have headed Everton in front soon afterwards. Mbeumo, in a pre-planned move, made way at half-time with Patrick Dorgo on, Diogo Dalot switching right and Amad playing further forward. Everton were still asking more questions, Leny Yoro bailing out Matthijs de Ligt when Beto appeared on his way to goal. Mount, however, changed the mood inside the Mercedes-Benz Stadium when he span off Bruno's flicked inside pass to thread a beauty across Pickford and into the far corner. Not for long. Fernandes was engaged in a shoving match on half-way after an ugly swipe as Ndiaye ran away to feed substitute Tyler Onyango, with Amad's interception only bringing an unwitting deflection off Heaven that trundled into the United net. Dorgu, played in by Mount, could have nicked it, Rasmus Hojlund kicking the post in frustration that his fellow Dane had not picked him out. United would not have deserved that. Bruno Fernandes in flare-up with Everton star as Man Utd own goal costs win

MAN UTD 2-2 EVERTON: Bryan Mbeumo made his first appearance in a United shirt, but Everton twice battled back to earn a draw in Atlanta after a bizarre Ayden Heaven own goal Manchester United and Everton played out a draw in the final game of the Premier League Summer Series at Atlanta's Mercedes-Benz Stadium. ‌ Bruno Fernandes gave United the lead from the penalty spot, before Iliman Ndiaye equalised with a fine angled finish. Substitute Mason Mount restored United's lead, but an Ayden Heaven own goal 15 minutes from time ensured it ended honours even. ‌ Ruben Amorim's side lifted the trophy, after remaining unbeaten in the Stateside mini-tournament, with two wins and a draw. Here are five talking points from the final fixture of the US tour: ‌ BRYAN MBEUMO MAKES ENCOURAGING UNITED DEBUT Bryan Mbeumo made his long-awaited United debut, following his £71million move from Brentford, having sat out the first two tour games in the US to work on his fitness. Playing as a right-sided No.10, Mbeumo had a quiet start to the game, but played a role in United's opener, delivering a first-time pass to Amad, who won a generous penalty when he went down after little contact from James Tarkowski, with Fernandes converting from the spot. Mbeumo had earlier been involved in a slick attacking move involving Fernandes, Amad and Matheus Cunha, the latter unable to get his shot on target. Mbeumo was unlucky not to score just before the half-hour, when he had two shots blocked in quick succession, racing on to the loose ball after Jordan Pickford had blocked a Fernandes effort. Mbeumo was replaced at half-time by Patrick Dorgu and United's newest recruit still has work to do to get up to full fitness for the start of the new season. UGARTE STILL A LIABILITY AT TIMES Manuel Ugarte was one of United's most impressive players in their opening tour game, a 2-1 win over West Ham at New Jersey's MetLife Stadium. Pressing high, winning back possession with tenacity and speed, Ugarte's high-tempo performance suggested he was in pole position to start United's Premier League opener at home to Arsenal on August 17. Here, though, the Uruguay midfielder's shortcomings resurfaced, never more so than in the 40th minute, when he attempted to bring the ball out from just outside of his own penalty area, only to be dispossessed by James Tarkowski. Idrissa Gueye picked up the loose ball and crossed for Iliman Ndiaye, who applied a clinical angled finish at the far post to make it 1-1. The goal was entirely Ugarte's fault and it remains to be seen if Amorim feels he can trust him to start against Arsenal. ‌ A HUGE SEASON AWAITS FOR MAINOO At the start of United's US tour, Amorim said he had 'big plans' for Kobbie Mainoo this season, in contrast to last term, when the England midfielder fell out of favour under his new boss. A sub for United's final three games, Maino came on with a minute left as United lost the Europa League final to Tottenham. On tour, however, Amorim's selection and praise of Mainoo suggests the 21-year-old will play a bigger role in the upcoming season. 'Mainoo, with those feet, playing the ball, if he finds the right pace, I will find a new solution,' said Amorim. 'He's going to be faster.' Unlike Ugarte, Mainoo looked assured in midfield, with Fernandes – who played deeper in the previous game - operating higher up the pitch. Given the way last season fizzled out for him, the upcoming one is one of huge significance for Mainoo, for club and country, with the World Cup back here in the US at the end of it. ‌ MASON MOUNT GOAL A TIMELY REMINDER OF HIS QUALITY Having been a hostage to injury for most of his two seasons at United, following his £60m move from Chelsea, Mason Mount has become a somewhat forgotten man. Although he ended last season on a positive note, returning to the starting line-up for the Europa League final and scoring three goals, the jury remains out on Mount because of his unavailability through injury. But on tour he has looked sharp and, most importantly, free from the persistent injury issues that have held him back from showing his best since joining United. Here, Mount showcased his goal threat, producing a fine angled finish 10 minutes after coming on in the second-half, to put United ahead. ‌ Although there will be huge competition at United next season, with one game a week following their failure to qualify for Europe, Mount has served notice he can play a key role and make up for lost time. FERNANDES AND NDIAYE FLARE-UP GIVES EDGE TO GAME Too often, these pre-season games can be insipid affairs, where players play within themselves to avoid injury or overload before the start of the new campaign. But there has been a competitive edge to all six games as part of the Premier League Summer series and, in this encounter, some needle between United skipper Fernandes and Everton goalscorer Iliman Ndiaye. Deep into the second-half, Fernandes tried to recover the ball from Ndiaye, with a robust challenge from behind that the Senegal forward deemed too excessive. Pushes were exchanged between Fernandes and Ndiaye, with team-mates rushing to intervene between them, while play continued and Everton made it 2-2 with an own goal from Ayden Heaven. When the dust had settled on their flare-up, Fernandes and Ndiaye made up, but not before both had been shown yellow cards.

Man Utd chief Omar Berrada delivers promising transfer update - 'Lots of late calls'

Manchester United have make RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko their top transfer target this summer, and chief executive Omar Berrada is hopeful of more deals Manchester United chief executive Omar Berrada says the club are working around the clock to make more signings before the start of the new season. ‌ United have added Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and Diego Leon this summer, but are pushing to sign a striker to lead their attack, with RB Leipzig's Benjamin Sesko their top target. ‌ Berrada, speaking before United's final US tour game against Everton in Atlanta, said he, director of football Jason Wilcox and boss Ruben Amorim are doing all they can to strengthen the squad with new faces. ‌ 'We have to do a lot of multitasking,' said Berrada. 'We have a team back home led by Jason, the recruitment team, that is working around the clock to ensure that we continue to find opportunities to strengthen our squad. There are lots of late calls and early morning meetings to make sure that we stay on top of it. 'Of course, adding players helps. We have seen the arrival of Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Diego Leon. They have adapted really well. 'We've seen Bryan play for the first time, Matheus has already shown his quality and Diego has shown that he is adapting very quickly, having just come from Paraguay, so all of the signs are positive and we are cautiously optimistic. We hope we're going to have a great season. 'The mood has been very good. The culture, the standards, the values, we are trying to ensure that we create a team spirit that allows the players to compete at the highest level. We have very high standards, Ruben is very clear about that and so is Jason. 'It's something we want to see with the players, with the staff, with everyone, because what we want to do is to win and to start winning titles as soon as possible. ‌ 'It's about raising standards, being very disciplined and the way you approach the application of those standards. We have to make sure that everybody abides by them, that everybody believes in them and that nobody falls out of line. It is really important for us to create that sense of togetherness around a single idea.' Reflecting on United's three-game US tour, Berrada said: 'It's been amazing, it's been very good. I'm really pleased with how it's gone. 'The team has trained really well, the interaction with the fans, activations with our partners, everything has been excellent. The Premier League has put on an excellent tournament.'
