Soccer-England's Walsh hope Spain can enjoy Euro final after Rubiales controversy
ZURICH (Reuters) -England and former Barcelona midfielder Keira Walsh hopes that Spain are able to enjoy the Euro 2025 final on Sunday after the controversy that clouded their 2023 World Cup triumph.
Defending champions England meet Spain in Basel on Sunday, two years on from a World Cup final that was overshadowed by then Spanish football federation chief Luis Rubiales kissing striker Jenni Hermoso on the lips after the game.
"There's a lot of respect between both the teams and, I think the most important thing for them as a footballer, is that they can enjoy this final – that there's not the controversy surrounding it," Walsh said from England's base camp on Thursday.
"The girls deserve to be there to play incredible football. The way our league jumped after we won the (2022) Euros, if you compare it to Spain it probably wasn't the same and they won the World Cup," said Walsh, who played 64 games for Barcelona before joining Chelsea.
"After the final there was a lot of controversy and I don't think, for them, there was enough spotlight on how incredible they played. It was all about the other stuff.
"As a professional, that was disappointing to see. I have a lot of friends in that team and I think they probably deserved a little bit more than what they got."
Rubiales was found guilty of sexual assault for the unsolicited kiss during the World Cup medal ceremony, and fined over 10,000 euros ($12,000). The incident sparked widespread debate about sexism in Spanish society and women's football, fuelling momentum for the "Me Too" movement in the country.

54 children swim from Morocco to Spain's Ceuta enclave
MADRID: At least 54 children and about 30 adults swam from Morocco to Spain's North African enclave of Ceuta in rough seas and fog, Spanish television reported on Saturday. Video footage on Spanish television channel RTVE showed Civil Guard launches making repeated rescue attempts to bring some of the swimmers to safety, while others swam across to the enclave. The children, who were mostly Moroccan, were taken to temporary centres in Ceuta, where authorities called for help from the central government in dealing with the latest arrivals. 'Don't leave us alone. This is a matter of state. This has to be resolved,' Juan Rivas of the Ceuta regional government told reporters on Saturday. On August 26 last year, hundreds of migrants took advantage of a thick mist to swim to Ceuta from neighbouring Morocco, local police said. In 2021, one boy was seen floating on empty plastic bottles in his attempt to reach Ceuta. Spain's two enclaves on Morocco's Mediterranean coast, Ceuta and Melilla, share the European Union's only land borders with Africa. The enclaves sporadically experience waves of attempted crossings by migrants trying to reach Europe. Moroccan nationals detained during the crossings are immediately sent back to Morocco unless they are underage or seeking asylum. People from other nationalities are taken to special centres where they are given shelter and released after a few days. Three years ago, at least 23 people died in a stampede when about 2,000 migrants tried to storm into Melilla, pushing down the border fence. - Reuters

Malaysia to host 2026 Sepak Takraw World Cup in KL
MALAYSIA has secured the hosting rights for the 2026 Sepak Takraw World Cup, announced by Sepaktakraw Association of Malaysia (PSM) president Datuk Mohd Sumali Reduan. The decision was made during the International Sepaktakraw Federation (ISTAF) council meeting in Hatyai, Thailand. 'ISTAF decided to give Malaysia the right to host the 2026 World Cup based on its record of holding international championships and in conjunction with Visit Malaysia 2026,' Mohd Sumali said in a statement. This will be Malaysia's third time hosting the event, following previous editions in 2011 and 2024. In addition to the hosting announcement, Mohd Sumali reiterated PSM's opposition to ISTAF's proposed rule change regarding the tekong's service circle. 'It will cause the uniqueness and artistry of the tekong position to disappear, which is saddening. My view, representing Malaysia, (is) that we should retain existing rules to preserve the art of the tekong's service,' he added. The PSM president also expressed dissatisfaction with the packed schedule of the ongoing 2025 Thai King's Cup, calling it unreasonable and detrimental to player performance. - Bernama
