Netflix docuseries American Murder: Gabby Petito revisits case, raises questions about Laundrie family's role

Express Tribune19-02-2025
A new Netflix docuseries, American Murder: Gabby Petito, has reignited public interest in the high-profile case of Gabby Petito's murder and the role of Brian Laundrie's parents in the investigation. The three-part series revisits the 2021 disappearance and killing of Petito, a 22-year-old aspiring travel vlogger, whose body was found in Wyoming's Bridger-Teton National Forest. Her fiancé, Brian Laundrie, was later named a person of interest before taking his own life.
The series sheds light on Christopher and Roberta Laundrie, whose refusal to cooperate with authorities fueled public outrage. When police searched for Petito, they remained silent and directed all inquiries to their lawyer. Court records later revealed that in the days following Petito's disappearance, Brian made multiple frantic calls to his parents. During one call, he allegedly told his father, 'Gabby's gone, I need a lawyer,' raising questions about what they knew at the time.
Another key focus of the documentary is a letter from Roberta Laundrie, found in Brian's backpack near his remains. The envelope was labeled 'burn after reading,' and in the letter, she wrote that she would help her son 'dispose of a body' or smuggle tools into jail. While Roberta claimed it was written before Brian's trip with Petito, Gabby's family disputed this, suggesting it was connected to the murder.
Following Petito's death, her parents sued the Laundries, alleging they knew about her murder and withheld information. The lawsuit was settled in February 2024 under undisclosed terms. Meanwhile, Brian's sister, Cassie Laundrie, has reportedly been estranged from her parents for nearly two years.
American Murder: Gabby Petito is now streaming on Netflix, offering a deeper look into a case that continues to raise lingering questions about accountability and justice.

Feds raid TikTok cult pastor Robert Shinn's home amid sex trafficking allegations

Federal agents raided the Tujunga residence of pastor Robert Shinn early Friday morning as part of an ongoing sex trafficking investigation linked to allegations spotlighted in the 2024 Netflix documentary Dancing for the Devil: The 7M TikTok Cult. The home, located at 7744 McGroarty Street, was searched at 6 a.m. by officials from the FBI, U.S. Postal Inspection Service, and El Monte Police Department SWAT. According to authorities, the sealed warrant includes accusations of sex trafficking, mail fraud, tax evasion, money laundering, and pandemic-related schemes. 'U.S. Postal Inspection Service is working closely with our local, state, and federal law enforcement partners on this ongoing investigation,' said Postal Inspector Patricia Mendoza. 'This remains an active case.' Robert Shinn is the founder of the Shekinah Church and CEO of 7M Films, a management company that recruits dancers and influencers. In the Netflix docuseries, several former members accused Shinn of coercion, financial exploitation, and unwanted sexual advances. Allegations in Dancing for the Devil included claims that Shinn exercised extreme control over the dancers' lives—managing their money, housing, relationships, and careers. Some also described experiences of grooming and psychological manipulation. Despite the raid, no arrests have been made as of Friday afternoon, and federal officials have not confirmed if charges will follow. The investigation remains ongoing.

'Eddington' actor Micheal Ward charged with rape and sexual assault

British actor Micheal Ward, best known for his breakout role in Netflix's Top Boy and acclaimed appearances in Empire of Light and Eddington, has been formally charged with two counts of rape and three counts of sexual assault, according to the Metropolitan Police. The alleged offences involve one woman and are reported to have occurred in January 2023. Ward, 27, from Cheshunt in Hertfordshire, is scheduled to appear at Thames Magistrates' Court in east London on August 28, 2025. Detective Superintendent Scott Ware, who is leading the investigation, stated that the Met's specialist officers are continuing to support the woman involved. 'We know investigations of this nature can have a significant impact on those who make reports,' Ware said in a statement. Catherine Baccas, deputy chief crown prosecutor for CPS London South, confirmed that the Crown Prosecution Service reviewed a file of evidence and authorized the charges. 'Micheal Ward has been charged with two counts of rape, two counts of assault by penetration, and one count of sexual assault,' she said. Baccas also emphasized the importance of a fair trial, reminding the public not to share content or commentary that could prejudice the proceedings. Ward rose to prominence for his role as Jamie in Top Boy, which ran from 2013 to 2022. In 2020, he won the BAFTA Rising Star Award and later earned a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Steve McQueen's Lovers Rock. Most recently, he appeared in the Cannes-premiering film Eddington, alongside Joaquin Phoenix and Emma Stone. Ward has not publicly commented on the charges. Legal proceedings are now active, and further developments will unfold in court.

Netflix sets October release for Italian serial killer drama ‘The Monster of Florence'

Netflix is bringing one of Italy's most terrifying real-life mysteries to the screen with The Monster of Florence, a four-part Italian crime drama set to premiere October 22. The limited series will mark the 10th anniversary of Netflix's launch in Italy and is helmed by Stefano Sollima, best known for Gomorrah and Suburra. Created by Sollima and longtime collaborator Leonardo Fasoli, the series revisits the long-unsolved case of a serial killer who terrorized the outskirts of Florence for nearly two decades. Between the late 1960s and 1985, 16 people, mainly young couples, were brutally murdered in secluded areas. The killer was never officially identified, and the case remains one of Italy's most infamous. The Monster of Florence explores not just the investigation, but also the lives and suspicions surrounding the many individuals considered suspects over the years. According to Netflix, the series takes an 'immersive' approach to storytelling, delving into the psychological toll the case took on victims' families, investigators, and the wider public. The show stars Marco Bullitta, Valentino Mannias, Francesca Olia, and Liliana Bottone, among others. It's produced by The Apartment (a Fremantle company) and AlterEgo, with Lorenzo Mieli, Sollima, and Gina Gardini serving as producers. A teaser trailer released this week offers glimpses of a tense, shadowy Florence and flashes of the fear and confusion that surrounded the killings. While dramatized, the show is grounded in real events and is expected to maintain a gritty, suspenseful tone. For fans of true crime and international thrillers, The Monster of Florence looks to deliver a gripping look at a case that still haunts Italy and continues to raise more questions than answers.
