
As it approaches its four-year cruising anniversary, Virgin Voyages has goals
NEW YORK -- Debuting its first ship to homeport in the Northeastern U.S. may be Virgin Voyages' biggest undertaking this year, but it's far from its only goal as the cruise line approaches its fourth anniversary.
As Virgin Voyages grows -- its fourth ship, the Brilliant Lady, will debut in New York in September -- and works to gain customer loyalty, it is eager to make each ship distinct, tempting customers to try a new one to access different cuisine and entertainment.
And through partnerships with travel advisors and its own advertising, Virgin Voyages aims to address a misconception: That its product is not just for young adults eager to party but one that can be enjoyed by adults of all ages.
Last month, CEO Nirmal Saverimuttu, COO Michelle Bentubo and chief marketing officer Nathan Rosenberg engaged with travel advisors at the Virgin Hotel in midtown Manhattan, talking with them about the Brilliant Lady's upcoming debut.
There were murmurs of agreement from agents in the room when Saverimuttu asked whether their clients believe Virgin is a "party cruise line." It's something a recently launched ad campaign intends to contradict, by featuring adults of all generations on Virgin enjoying activities from running to pasta-making classes.
"We've been trying to support you all with better marketing messages ... to help you tell the story, because the reality is Virgin Voyages is for anybody traveling without kids," Saverimuttu told the advisors. "That's it."
Keeping onboard concepts fresh
One of Virgin's biggest competitive assets is its dining options, and it knows that means it needs to keep the concepts fresh.
Saverimuttu said that customers were "repeating a lot. They're coming back far faster than we ever expected them to, which is a good thing, but it's a challenge for us that we have to keep evolving the product."
He hinted at new menus underway, and that week, the brand announced that Brilliant Lady would debut a Spanish-inspired restaurant, Rojo by Razzle Dazzle. Scarlet Lady, by comparison, has a Razzle Dazzle restaurant with Chinese cuisine called Lucky Lotus.
"What are the differentiators we can put on each of the ships, that you're only going to get this experience when you go on that vessel?" Bentubo said in explaining the philosophy. On the entertainment side, for example, the offerings on the Brilliant will be unique, she said, with seven original productions.
Other features Virgin has underway aim to simplify and add incentives to the booking and arrival process. A pre- and post-cruise package involving the New York Virgin Hotel is in the works for Brilliant Lady-bound guests.
A new Brilliant Bounty incentive will give advisors $200 per new Brilliant Lady customer booked for the next two months. That money can be used any way an agent chooses, including handing it directly to the customer should they need an extra push to convince them the price is right.
And the company is redoing its Circle program for group bookings, which Saverimuttu conceded was too complex.
"The intent for us was to create a program that was very flexible, that was not complicated, but unfortunately I think we have failed the second half," he said. "We have too much flexibility, so the whole thing's become a mess."
Virgin Voyages' positive booking trends
Virgin said that as of the end of its first quarter, March 31, it wasn't feeling the effects of global sentiment about U.S. policies, which have prompted some foreign travelers to avoid visits to the U.S.
"We have not seen a slowdown from our Canadian market," Bentubo said, adding that Canadian revenue was up 45% and bookings grew by 36% in Q1.
The one trend the company was watching was a move to closer-in bookings, she said. And Virgin is aware that customers may be increasingly cautious about discretionary spending, Bentubo said.
"We will have to remain focused on making sure that we are providing the value, so that when somebody chooses to spend that money, and they want to spend it wisely, that they're getting the most for their dollar," Bentubo said.
"And that is why I think that we've not experienced [a slowdown]. People are booking us, and our revenue has been phenomenal over the last three months ... because we offer a value experience."

Stellantis takes $2.7 billion hit in market shaken by Trump
Stellantis NV's new Chief Executive Officer Antonio Filosa offered investors a first glimpse of his plan to overhaul the struggling automaker for a global car market that's being reshaped by President Donald Trump. The maker of Jeep SUVs and Fiat cars on Monday announced a surprise €2.3 billion ($2.7 billion) first-half net loss — analysts had expected a small profit — as the company tallies the costs of trade wars and scraps investments in electric and hydrogen vehicles to account for reduced demand. Trump has dialed back U.S. support for EVs since he returned to the White House. The 52-year-old Italian is trying to 'kitchen sink' the first-half results 'to provide a low earnings base upon which to build,' Bloomberg Intelligence analyst Michael Dean said in a note. The new CEO, in office for roughly a month, is responding to big changes in the auto market as well as the company's previous missteps. Trump's moves are raising costs and upending global supply chains, while Chinese manufacturers led by BYD Co. are pushing into Europe's stagnant car market. Stellantis' issues are gravest in the former profit center North America, where its shipments fell 25% in the second quarter after Filosa's predecessor Carlos Tavares angered dealers and unions with a series of painful cost cuts. Stellantis flagged some €3.3 billion in pretax net charges it incurred in the first half — including €700 million linked to its decision to pull out of a joint hydrogen-vehicle venture with Michelin and Forvia SE. The manufacturer is shifting investments from electric to hybrid vehicles and also incurred impairments on certain Maserati platforms during the first half. Additional charges were tied to the widening of a Takata airbag recall in Europe and a restructuring of its headcount in the region. The company also cited a roughly €300 million hit from U.S. tariffs as it lost production and responded to higher duties. The impact of duties will likely be 'significantly' bigger in the second half, Chief Financial Officer Doug Ostermann said on a call with analysts. Stellantis shares fell as much as 3.8% in Milan before erasing the losses and trading up 0.4% as of 4:04 p.m. local time. The stock is down around 37% this year. The company has been falling behind in the U.S. due to an aging lineup, model delays and pricing blunders. Filosa is now under pressure to overhaul the product offering in the country as local drivers gravitate toward hybrids. The Trump administration has made a series of moves that will hurt demand for battery-powered cars, such as eliminating penalties manufacturers faced for missing fuel-economy standards and phasing out federal tax credits of as much as $7,500 toward EV purchases. But reversing its fortunes there may take some time as Tavares' stringent cost cuts — like swapping metal parts for plastic ones on rugged vehicles — alienated longtime customers and hurt Stellantis' stable of brands that also include Ram, Dodge and Chrysler. Filosa, who lives in the U.S. and previously ran Jeep, also is contending with excess production capacity in Europe, where deliveries remain sluggish and some of its brands, notably luxury-car maker Maserati, are burning money. The company's global vehicle shipments fell 6% in the second quarter amid declines in North America and Europe. Still, the introduction of key new products in Europe - for example the Fiat Grande Panda and the Citroën C3 Aircross — went well and the current year is set to be one of 'gradual and sustainable improvement,' Filosa said in an internal message to employees obtained by Bloomberg on Monday. The company will reintroduce its financial guidance for the year when it releases more detailed first-half results on July 29, Ostermann said Monday. Stellantis said it disclosed the preliminary first-half figures to address differences between analyst forecasts and its performance in the period. It had pulled its guidance in April, citing U.S. tariff uncertainty. Any strategy changes got held up by Stellantis' months-long CEO search after Tavares left in December. Chairman John Elkann eventually settled on Naples-born Filosa, a seasoned company insider who joined Fiat in 1999 and later rose through the ranks as a protégé of the late Fiat Chrysler boss Sergio Marchionne. Russia Touts Trump-Putin Meeting at Major Deadline
The Kremlin said Russian President Vladimir Putin could meet with U.S. President Donald Trump if the latter visits China in September. China is due to hold a military parade in Beijing on September 3 to mark 80 years since the end of World War Two, and Putin is set to attend. The parade is a day after Trump's 50-day deadline for Putin to make peace in Ukraine or face much tougher economic sanctions. Trump set the deadline on July 14, warning Russia that it faced punitive secondary tariffs against those still trading with it if there is no peace. China is one of the countries that would be hit hardest by a secondary tariff. Beijing has propped up the sanctions-hit Russian economy with large-scale oil purchases. Dmitry Peskov, Putin's spokesman, said at a press briefing on Monday, July 21, that the Trump meeting could take place in Beijing in September, state news agency TASS reported. It is not clear if Beijing has invited Trump to the parade, or plans to. Trump said he and Chinese President Xi Jinping had given reciprocal invites for visits to each other's countries during a recent call to break the deadlock in U.S.-China trade negotiations. China claims Wells Fargo banker blocked from leaving country is ‘involved in criminal case'
China said Monday that a US-based Wells Fargo banker has been blocked from leaving the country because she 'is involved in a criminal case.' Chenyue Mao, an Atlanta-based managing director at Wells Fargo who was born in Shanghai, has been blocked from leaving in accordance with the law, Guo Jiakun, a spokesperson for the ministry, said during a news briefing.
