Abu Dhabi's population has boomed in the last year, here's why
If you've noticed the capital's brunch spots, beaches and business lounges feeling a little buzzier lately, you're not imagining it – Abu Dhabi just got a whole lot busier.
According to fresh figures from the Statistics Centre – Abu Dhabi (SCAD), the emirate's population jumped by a whopping 7.5 percent in 2024, reaching 4.14 million people.
That's a serious leap and it's not just about numbers – it's a sign of Abu Dhabi's rising global pull as a place to live, work and grow.
Over the past decade, the population has shot up by 51 percent, up from 2.7 million in 2014. It's part of a much bigger story: one where international professionals, entrepreneurs and investors are flocking to the UAE capital for its stability, safety and next-gen opportunities in everything from AI to finance.
Behind the boom? A thriving economy that grew 3.8 percent in 2024, with non-oil sectors making up over half of Abu Dhabi's GDP – a sign the emirate's big bet on diversification is paying off.
And it's not just about spreadsheets. Abu Dhabi is rapidly positioning itself as a global talent magnet, with world-class infrastructure, cutting-edge digital services and a forward-thinking government already laying the groundwork for what it calls an 'AI-native' future.
Think smart governance that uses data and AI to predict your needs before you even speak up – whether you're a resident renewing a license or a startup scaling up operations. It's all part of the Abu Dhabi Government Digital Strategy 2025-2027.
The workforce is growing fast too – up 9.1 percent last year, with professional roles increasing across tech, advanced manufacturing and finance. Over half the population is now aged between 25 and 44, making it one of the most economically dynamic populations anywhere in the world.
Add to that the fact Abu Dhabi has been ranked the safest city in the world for nine years running and the most liveable city in MENA for the seventh and it's easy to see why so many are choosing to call it home.
What's next? With Dhs107.4 billion worth of construction projects underway and record-breaking investment flowing into sectors like AI and finance, don't expect the momentum to slow any time soon.
Whether you're a long-time local or a recent arrival, one thing's for sure: this city is growing – fast. And we're not mad at it.

ADNOC Drilling awards $800mln hydraulic fracturing contract
Adnoc Drilling Company has announced that one of its key units, Adnoc Onshore, has awarded a major contract worth $800 million for the provision of integrated hydraulic fracturing services for conventional and tight reservoirs. This is its fifth major and accretive contract in just over 2 months. The five-year agreement is set to commence in Q3, marking another significant milestone in Adnoc Drilling's evolution as a fully integrated technology-enabled energy services company. The scope of work includes the design, execution and evaluation of multistage hydraulic fracturing treatments, which will be deployed across a wide range of assets in Abu Dhabi, said the company in a statement. Fracturing services for conventional and tight reservoirs are used to enhance the flow of oil or gas through existing natural pathways and optimize production by improving flow rates. The deal supports Adnoc's strategic goal to accelerate the development of conventional and tight reservoirs across the UAE, said the statement. This award further reinforces the Abu Dhabi group's leadership in high-tech oilfield services, combining next-generation equipment, artificial intelligence (AI) and real-time intelligence to deliver smarter, safer and more sustainable energy outcomes, it added. On the contract award, CEO Abdulla Ateya Al Messabi said: "This significant contract is a powerful endorsement of Adnoc Drilling's expanding capabilities and our trusted partnership with Adnoc Onshore. It reflects our ability to deliver high-impact, technologically advanced fracturing services that will help unlock the UAE's energy potential." "As we continue our transformation, we are proud to support the nation's strategic energy goals and reinforce our position as a leader in integrated drilling and completion solutions," he added. As per the deal, Adnoc Drilling will deploy advanced technologies throughout the project to maximise efficiency and performance. Proprietary fracturing simulation software will be used to optimise every stage of the operation, increasing flow rates and overall hydrocarbon recovery. Intelligent fluid systems will adapt dynamically in real-time to reservoir conditions, improving fracture efficiency and reducing environmental impact. Automated pumping units and blending systems will enhance safety, streamline operations and reduce the need for on-site manpower. The economic and financial impact of this contract further reaffirms the 2025 guidance and the 2026 revenue guidance. It also provides further growth and upside in 2027 onwards beyond the current guidance. This growth will be accretive to the current return on equity and earnings per share. The contract has a ceiling cumulative value of up to $800 million in revenue for Adnoc Drilling, subject to client discretion. Actual revenues will depend on the pace and extent of call-offs. This marks the fifth contract in just over two months, including a $1.63 billion five-year contract for Integrated Drilling Services (IDS), a $806 million contract for three island rigs and a $1.15 billion 15-year contract for two jack-up rigs, all awarded by Adnoc Offshore, and a $400 million backlog of Adnoc Drilling's signed acquisition in Oman and Kuwait.-TradeArabia News Service Copyright 2024 Al Hilal Publishing and Marketing Group Provided by SyndiGate Media Inc. Borouge to set up petchem sector's first AI control room
Borouge, a leading petrochemicals company that provides innovative and differentiated polyolefins solutions, is collaborating with Honeywell to conduct a proof of concept for AI-powered autonomous operations, which has the potential to revolutionise Borouge's UAE plant operations. An Abu Dhabi–based petrochemicals company and a manufacturer of polyolefins, Borouge is a joint venture between Abu Dhabi National Oil Company and Austrian group Borealis, the second largest producer of polyolefins in Europe. The collaboration between Borouge and Honeywell is set to deliver the petrochemical industry's first AI-driven control room designed for full-scale, real-time operation, establishing a new standard for the future of AI in petrochemicals. Hazeem Sultan Al Suwaidi, Chief Executive Officer of Borouge, said: 'Borouge's AI, Digitalisation, and Technology (AIDT) transformation programme is setting new standards in operations, innovation and business performance. By collaborating with global AI leaders such as Honeywell, we are accelerating growth, driving efficiency, and enhancing shareholder value. This project further strengthens Borouge's competitive edge as we continue to deliver on our ambitious AIDT roadmap.' As part of the collaboration agreement, both companies will bring their expertise in process technology and autonomous control capabilities to identify new opportunities to deploy Agentic AI solutions and advanced machine learning algorithms. George Bou Mitri, President of Honeywell Industrial Automation, Middle East, Turkey, Africa, Central Asia, said: 'Our collaboration with Borouge is a clear example of how joint efforts can accelerate innovation across industry.
