El-Sisi calls for unified political settlement in Libya - Foreign Affairs

Al-Ahram Weekly17 hours ago
Egypt's president, Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi, has called for renewed efforts to resolve Libya's political deadlock, emphasising the need for presidential and parliamentary elections 'as soon as possible'.
Speaking in Cairo during a meeting with Aguila Saleh, the speaker of Libya's eastern-based House of Representatives, El-Sisi said a comprehensive political settlement was the only path toward stability and a 'dignified life' for Libyans.
In a statement following the meeting, Egypt's presidency reiterated its backing for Libya's national institutions and called for the departure of all foreign forces from the country — a long-standing demand among those seeking to restore Libyan sovereignty.
El-Sisi stated that Egypt would continue to collaborate with Libyan factions and international actors to facilitate the country's path toward stability. He also signalled Egypt's interest in contributing to Libya's reconstruction and sharing its development expertise.
Saleh, a key figure in eastern Libya's political leadership, thanked Egypt for its role in supporting Libyan unity and described its involvement as crucial to any political transition in Libya.
Libya has been mired in instability since the 2011 NATO-backed uprising that toppled Muammar Gaddafi.
Despite periodic lulls in violence, deep political rifts continue to undermine efforts toward national elections and a lasting peace.

France hopes EU will reach tariff deal with US 'this weekend' - International

France's finance minister said on Saturday he hoped the European Union would reach a deal on tariffs with Washington "this weekend". EU and US negotiators are holding final stretch talks over the weekend as Brussels chases a deal before a July 9 deadline to avoid the return of steep tariffs. "On tariffs, it could all be decided this weekend," said French Finance Minister Eric Lombard, speaking at an economic forum in southern France. "If not, Europe will undoubtedly have to respond more vigorously to restore the balance," he said. Without a deal, the default levy on EU imports is set to double to 20 percent or even higher -- US President Donald Trump having threatened at one point to slap 50 percent duties. EU chief Ursula von der Leyen said on Thursday Brussels sought an agreement in principle, which would mean further talks would be necessary on the details. But the commission believes that whatever happens, an imbalance in trade measures between the EU and the United States will remain. It is "essential" for the European Union to protect its industries from the United States and China, said Lombard. "Imagine the world as a playground where everyone is playing ... and following the rules," he said. "And then three bullies come along and don't follow any rules... and push around the children who were playing nicely. That's the world of predators," he said, referring to the US, Russia and China. UN condemns Russia's largest drone assault on Ukraine - War in Ukraine

UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres condemned Saturday Russia's biggest drone and missile attack yet in the three-year war in Ukraine. "The Secretary-General strongly condemns the latest series of large-scale drone and missile attacks by the Russian Federation," Guterres said in a statement referring to the assault Friday and also calling for a full, immediate and unconditional ceasefire. Hours-long Russian bombardments sent Ukrainians scurrying for shelters across the country. AFP journalists in Kyiv heard drones buzzing over the capital and explosions ringing out throughout the night as Ukrainian air defence systems fended off the attack. "The Secretary-General is alarmed by this dangerous escalation and the growing number of civilian casualties. Attacks against civilians and civilian infrastructure are prohibited under international law and must stop immediately," said the statement issued by UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric.
