The new policy supersedes the existing National Sports Policy of 2001 and outlines a visionary and strategic roadmap to establish India as a global sporting powerhouse and a strong contender for excellence at international sporting events, including the 2036 Olympic Games.

After the Cabinet nod, the Minister for Youth Affairs and Sports Mansukh Mandviya posted on X, 'This landmark policy outlines a strategic roadmap to promote sports culture at the grassroots, enhance infrastructure, support athlete development, and establish India as a formidable force in global sports.'
The NSP 2025 is the outcome of extensive consultations involving Central Ministries, NITI Aayog, State Governments, National Sports Federations (NSFs), athletes, domain experts, and public stakeholders. The policy is anchored on five key pillars.
The pillar of excellence on the Global Stage aims to strengthen sports programs from the grassroots to elite levels, including mechanisms for early identification and nurturing of talent. Promote the establishment of competitive leagues and competitions, and develop sports infrastructure in both rural and urban areas.
It aims to build world-class systems for training, coaching, and holistic athlete support and enhance the capacity and governance of National Sports Federations.
Encourage the adoption of sports science, sports science, medicine, and technology to boost athletic performance. Train and develop sports personnel, including coaches, technical officials, and support staff. The NSP 2025 recognises the economic potential of sports and seeks to promote sports tourism and attract major international events to India.
It aims to strengthen the sports manufacturing ecosystem and promote startups and entrepreneurship in the sector. Encourage private sector participation through Public-Private Partnerships (PPPs), Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) and innovative funding initiatives. The policy emphasises the role of sports in driving social inclusion by Promoting participation among women, economically weaker sections, tribal communities, and persons with disabilities through focused programs.
Revitalising and promoting indigenous and traditional games. The policy positions sports as a viable career option by integrating it into education, encouraging volunteering, and facilitating dual-career pathways.
The policy aims to engage the Indian diaspora through sports. To make sports a national movement, the policy aims to drive mass participation and a culture of fitness through nationwide campaigns and community-based events. Among its other objectives include launching fitness indices for schools, colleges, and workplaces and enhancing universal access to sports facilities. In alignment with the National Education Policy 2020, the NSP 2025 proposes to: Integrate sports into school curricula. Equip educators and physical education teachers with specialised training to promote sports education and awareness. To realise its objectives, the NSP 2025 lays down a comprehensive implementation strategy encompassing: Governance: Establish a robust regulatory framework for sports governance, including a legal framework.
It aims to develop innovative financing mechanisms and engage private sector participation through PPPs and CSR. The policy aums to leverage emerging technologies, including AI and data analytics, for performance tracking, research, and program implementation.
The NSP 2025 aims to create a national framework with well-defined benchmarks, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs), and time-bound targets. Model Policy for States: The NSP 2025 will serve as a model for States and Union Territories, encouraging them to revise or formulate their own policies in alignment with national objectives.
The policy calls for a whole-of-government approach to integration of sports promotion into the activities, schemes, and programs of all Ministries and Departments to achieve a holistic impact.(ANI)

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday (July 2, 2025) said India is committed to BRICS as a vital platform for cooperation among emerging economies as he left on a week-long visit to five countries, including Brazil where he will attend the bloc's meeting. "Together, we strive for a more peaceful, equitable, just, democratic and balanced multipolar world order," he said in his departure statement. During the week-long travel, the PM will visit Ghana, Trinidad and Tobago, Argentina, Brazil and Namibia. Ghana will be his first port of call. Mr. Modi said that at the invitation of President John Dramani Mahama, he will be there on July 2 and 3. Ghana is a valued partner in the Global South and plays an important role in the African Union and the Economic Community of West African States, he said, adding that he looked forward to talks aimed at further deepening the two countries' historical ties and opening up new windows of cooperation, including in the areas of investment, energy, health, security, capacity building and development partnership. He said, "As fellow democracies, it will be an honour to speak at the Parliament of Ghana." For the next couple of days after visiting Ghana, he will be in Trinidad and Tobago, a country with which India shares deep-rooted historical, cultural and people-to-people connect. Mr. Modi will meet President Christine Carla Kangaloo, who was the chief guest at this year's Pravasi Bharatiya Divas, and Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, who has recently assumed office for the second term. "Indians first arrived in Trinidad and Tobago 180 years ago. This visit will provide an opportunity to rejuvenate the special bonds of ancestry and kinship that unite us," the Prime Minister said. "I will travel to Brasilia for a bilateral State Visit, the first by an Indian Prime Minister in nearly six decades. This visit will provide an opportunity to strengthen our close partnership with Brazil, and work with my friend, President H.E. Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, on advancing the priorities of the Global South," he said. Namibia, which Mr. Modi described as a trusted partner sharing a common history of struggle against colonialism, will be his last destination. He will meet President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and chart a new roadmap for cooperation for the benefit of the two peoples, regions and the wider Global South, Mr. Modi said. He added, "It will be a privilege to also address the Joint Session of Namibian Parliament as we celebrate our enduring solidarity and shared commitment for freedom and development." Mr. Modi expressed confidence that his visits to the five countries will reinforce India's bonds and friendship across the Global South, strengthen their partnerships on both sides of the Atlantic, and deepen engagements in the multilateral platforms such as BRICS, the African Union, ECOWAS and the CARICOM.

Govt clears employment linked incentive scheme
The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday approved the much-awaited employment-linked incentive (ELI) scheme proposed in the 2024-25 Budget, which will offer fresh recruits in private-sector jobs a month's wages, while firms hiring them will get financial incentives — steps aimed at boosting job opportunities and enhancing skills of working-age people. Govt clears employment linked incentive scheme The sops, aimed at creating 35 million new jobs in two years, will provide direct financial benefits up to ₹ 15,000 in two instalments to 19.2 million first-time employees, Union minister of information and broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw said at a briefing. The outlay cleared by the Cabinet for the roll out stands at ₹ 99,446 crore. Firms participating in the scheme will also get a cash incentive of ₹ 3000 for each additional employee hired for two years, while for companies in the manufacturing sector, the sops will be available for an extended period of four years, according to an official statement. The jobs scheme is part of the PM's package to boost employment and skills, aimed at creating opportunities for nearly 41 million job-seekers in the long run, with a total estimated budget outlay of ₹ 2 lakh crore. 'The aim of the scheme is to create more formal employment and sustain it. It will promote formalization of the workforce, while complementing the national manufacturing mission,' the minister said. According to the government's Economic Survey 2024, India needs to create 7.85 million non-farm jobs every year until 2030 to absorb its expanding labour force, way higher than the current rate of employment. While one part of the scheme deals with one-off payments of a month's wages as direct benefit transfer to all first-time employees entering the workforce in formal sectors, up to a salary ceiling of ₹ 1 lakh, the second component is aimed at contributing a share of salaries. The scheme has been designed to calculate a baseline of employee strength and firms with less than 50 employees will need to hire two additional staffers to be eligible for the incentives. Employers with more than 50 workers will need to add five new employees to the payrolls. All employees need to be registered with the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation, the state-backed retirement-income manager, according to the statement. According to the details of the scheme, for new employees with a provident-fund base wage of ₹ 10,000, the incentive for hirers will be ₹ 1000 and for those who fall in the base wage slab of between ₹ 10,000 and ₹ 20,000, the incentive will be ₹ 2000. For salaries of between ₹ 20,000 and ₹ 1 lakh, the benefit will be ₹ 3,000. The scheme therefore will offer incentives tied to EPFO contributions to both employers and first-time employees in the manufacturing sector in the form of funds linked to a specified pay scale for the period during which the plan will be in force. The benefits would be applicable for jobs created between 1 August 2025 and 31 July 2027. 'The target is to create jobs across the country for freshers, with a special focus on the manufacturing sector,' Vaishnaw said. In an earlier briefing, labour minister Mansukh Mandaviya had said the government would put in place foolproof systems and AI-driven technologies to monitor hirings and utilisation of funds provided by the government, when asked how authorities would ensure firms don't pass off existing employees as new ones to benefit from the incentives. The corporate affairs ministry had been tasked with drawing the list of firms which will participate in the employment-linked sops, while the labour ministry was involved in finalizing the proposals.
