Both the police and the provincial education department are probing the matter. It's reported that the teacher and the schoolboy started interacting on social network platform TikTok, before moving communication to WhatsApp. Peters said that she welcomed the steps taken by both the police and the education department.
"We must be absolutely clear this is not a case of inappropriate messaging, this is grooming, digital sexual exploitation and an abuse of both power and trust. The fact that the contact began via TikTok and then moved to WhatsApp shows how vulnerable our children are in online spaces, and how quickly exploitation can happen even by those who are meant to protect them."

Patriotic Alliance leader Gayton McKenzie has defended his deputy, Kenny Kunene, amid controversy over alleged ties to a mastermind in DJ Sumbody's murder case. This follows Kunene's presence during the arrest of Katiso 'KT' Molefe, a suspect in DJ Sumbody's murder investigation. Molefe was arrested for his alleged role in the killing of amapiano star Oupa 'DJ Sumbody' Sefoka in November 2022. DJ Sumbody and his bodyguard died in a drive-by shooting on a Woodmead road after their vehicle was shot at. The arrest occurred on Monday, with Kunene present at Molefe's home, raising questions about their relationship and possible associations. Kunene insisted he was only there to assist journalists with a scheduled interview at Molefe's house. He explained that his contact had helped the journalist secure an interview with Molefe and had accompanied them there. Kunene maintains he does not have Molefe's contact details and had never visited the suspect's home before the arrest day. 'Then there was an opportunity to interview Molefe and somebody that I know who knows Molefe, and then I arranged the interview. I then had to transport the journalist to Molefe's home,' he told eNCA. He added he was shocked when the police raided Molefe's home and arrested him. Following this, on Tuesday, McKenzie announced that Kunene has been placed on thirty days of special leave while the matter is investigated internally. In a post on X, McKenzie said his believe that Kunene had no direct link with Molefe, and they are launching a probe. 'Firstly, I believe Kenny 100%. I can't expect everyone to believe him, hence we are launching a full investigation to prove what we already know, which is that he is innocent. We will share the whole process and findings,' he said. He added, 'People are saying that I shouldn't vouch for @Kenny_T_Kunene, but I will vouch for him a million times. I know this man. Two children hit and killed walking home on N2 near Amatikulu, mother critical Two children, aged six and ten, were killed after being struck by a vehicle on the N2 near Amatikulu on Tuesday evening. The boys had been walking home with their pregnant mother when the incident occurred shortly after 7pm. The woman suffered critical injuries and was treated on scene by IPSS Medical Rescue paramedics. The incident was initially reported as a hit-and-run, but it is understood the driver has since been identified. This comes just three days after five people, including a family of four, were killed nearby in a terrible crash on the R66 near the Dokodweni bridge. Two sentenced for 2020 matric exam paper theft
The Johannesburg magistrate's court on Wednesday convicted and sentenced two people who stole a 2020 mathematics matric question paper. Themba Daniel Shikwambana, 36, and Thobile Sweetbetter Duze, 48, pleaded guilty to theft. The Hawks said on November 16 2020, the department of basic education received information about a possible leak of a mathematics matric exam question paper. The department was alerted via a WhatsApp photograph which was later verified and confirmed to be a true copy of the 2020 Mathematics Paper 2 exam paper. Investigations revealed some pupils in Limpopo and Gauteng confirmed receiving the leaked paper via WhatsApp. The matter was then reported to the Hawks' serious commercial crime investigation team based in Pretoria for further investigation. 'On November 25 2020, Shikwambana, who was working at a printing company in Johannesburg where exam papers were printed, was traced and arrested in Orange Farm. 'Further investigation led to the arrest of Duze on June 10 2021 in Port Shepstone, KwaZulu-Natal,' Hawks spokesperson Lt-Col Christopher Singo said. The accused appeared in court on several occasions culminating in their recent conviction. The court sentenced Shikwambana and Duze to a fine of R100,000 or 12 months' imprisonment, of which R50,000 or six months' imprisonment is suspended for five years on condition that they are not convicted of the same offence during the period of suspension. The court ordered them to pay the fine of R50,000 in monthly instalments of R5,000 on or before April 2026.
