Tech layoffs 2025: After Meta invests billions, Scale AI to lay off 200 employees
The layoffs come shortly after Meta announced a $14.3 billion deal for a 49 percent stake in Scale AI and brought in its former CEO, Alexandr Wang, to head a new superintelligence lab. That lab is now being filled with senior staff reportedly poached from other leading AI labs. Despite this close partnership, Scale AI has said it continues to operate independently. The news of the lay-off also comes just weeks after the company came under some serious criticism for its data security practices. An investigation by last month revealed that at least 85 Google Docs containing confidential client information and internal notes were publicly accessible. These documents reportedly included details from AI training projects with major tech firms such as Google, Meta, and Elon Musk's xAI.Among the exposed files were training prompts meant for improving Google's Bard chatbot (now Gemini), internal feedback on the models' weaknesses, and even a confidential xAI project called 'Project Xylophone' designed to help train AI on conversation styles. There were also audio files tied to Meta's chatbot development. In addition to project details, some spreadsheets reportedly contained personal information of contractors, including emails, payment issues, and notes on performance. One document titled 'move all cheating taskers' listed hundreds of names flagged for suspected misconduct, and was editable by anyone with the link. The recent leaks have raised concerns among some of Scale's biggest clients. While no formal fallout has been reported. However, according to a Business Insider report, some companies were reconsidering their partnerships in light of the breach.- Ends

Meta investors settle lawsuit over Cambridge Analytica, FTC payout
By Jef Feeley, Kurt Wagner and Jennifer Kay Meta Platforms Inc. investors say they have reached a settlement with current and former directors at the company to end a multibillion-dollar case in Delaware. Terms of the settlement, which were reached one day after the trial started, weren't immediately disclosed. Representatives from Meta declined to comment. The deal would end a legal fight over the way company leaders handled the Cambridge Analytica data privacy scandal, including claims that the company overpaid in a 2019 Federal Trade Commission settlement in order to personally protect Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg. The litigation in Delaware Chancery Court focused on the $5 billion that Meta, then known as Facebook, paid to settle with the FTC over privacy issues. The case followed an issue with Cambridge Analytica, in which an outside developer collected personal data from millions of Facebook users without their consent. The political research firm was hired by Donald Trump's 2016 election campaign. Meta shareholders accused the company's top executives of turning a blind eye to red flags over Cambridge Analytica's data practices, then pushing the company to overpay the FTC so that Zuckerberg would not be held personally liable. Shareholders were seeking at least $7 billion in damages to be repaid back to the company. The trial opened Wednesday with testimony from a director at the time of the FTC deal, Jeffrey Zients, who was later former President Joe Biden's chief of staff. He said the board asked its lawyers to approach the FTC with a proposal that it was willing to pay billions of dollars to settle allegations but would not accept any agreement that held founder Zuckerberg personally responsible. Board members 'felt it was important to get this behind us so we could focus on growth,' Zients said. They believed Zuckerberg, as CEO, was essential to the business and 'there wasn't any indication' he personally had anything to do with the privacy missteps related to political consulting firm Cambridge Analytica, he said. Zuckerberg, former Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg, and prominent venture capital investors Marc Andreessen and Peter Thiel were expected to testify during the eight-day trial. Andreessen, who still sits on the company's board, was expected on the witness stand Thursday. A spokesperson for Sandberg did not immediately respond to a request for comment. By proceeding to trial, when similar claims typically fail to survive a motion to dismiss, Meta appeared to have a story to tell about what happened with the FTC settlement and Cambridge Analytica, said Paul Regan, Widener University Delaware Law School professor. But a settlement eliminates the need to explore the evidence through trial. 'If they can wrap this thing up for a number they like, it's basically a pretty cool math calculation,' Regan said. The case is Facebook Derivative Litigation, 2018-0307, Delaware Chancery Court.

Mark Zuckerberg is doing to AI datacentres what Elon Musk did to Tesla
Source: Instagram/ Mark Zuckerberg Facebook's parent company, Meta , is reportedly constructing some of its new AI data centres inside tents. This move allows the social media giant to rapidly expand capacity at its existing data centre campuses. The strategy essentially mirrors an approach taken by Elon Musk's Tesla in 2018. At that time, Tesla built a new Model 3 assembly line in just two weeks within a large tent outside its main factory. This quick setup significantly increased the car's production, with the tented area reportedly contributing to 20% of all Model 3s produced that week. According to a report by Business Insider, a company spokesperson, while confirming the news, has emphasised that the entire "supercluster" facility isn't solely tent-based. This comes days after company CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced that the company will spend tens and millions of dollars for several multi-gigawatt superclusters to ramp up its compute power. What these tent-based data centres mean for Mark Zuckerberg's AI plans These structures will provide Meta the necessary push in quickly deploying additional AI computing power. Data centres contain complex and expensive equipment that requires precise temperature control to prevent overheating. Building parts of these facilities in tents suggests a prioritisation of speed over traditional construction methods, the report noted. According to SemiAnalysis (via Business Insider), Meta's embrace of this "speed above all else" data centre design is "inspired by xAI's unprecedented time-to-market." The report added that Meta is already building more such facilities, a development that will likely surprise traditional data centre and real estate investors. SemiAnalysis, however, highlighted the use of 'prefabricated power and cooling modules' and 'ultra-light structures' to prioritise speed. However, operating data centres in tents presents challenges, particularly regarding heat. Tents can get very hot, potentially forcing Meta to temporarily shut down workloads during peak summer temperatures. As per SemiAnalysis CEO Dylan Patel, while Meta will likely build permanent data centres in the long term, the company needs these facilities operational 'as soon as possible' in the short and medium term. He added that 'everyone is trying to build data centres as fast as possible in the race to achieve AGI,' and Meta is using tents to 'reduce construction bottlenecks' related to power, data center capacity, and construction crews.
