Snow Patrol frontman to perform home city gig with a difference
The annual festival includes almost 100 events throughout August, and is expected to attract about 50,000 people to the city, with Bangor Castle Walled Garden and the Court House on the seafront as the focal venues.
Lightbody will be talking to Irish author and broadcaster Sinead Gleeson about his book The Forest Is The Path, which was published in March, in what has been billed as a 'very different and incredibly personal hometown appearance', on August 26-27.
Among the other stars to appear at the Walled Garden are singers Lisa O'Neill and Mary Coughlan, folk duo Ye Vagabonds, and comedians Paddy Raff, Chris Kent and Neil Delamere.
Events at the Court House include The Ocelots, twin brothers from Wexford now based in Germany, and a special festival performance by Northern Ireland Opera.
Among the other author events scheduled, former Labour cabinet member Alan Johnson will talk about his new book, Harold Wilson, Chris Whitaker will be discussing his international best-selling novel All The Colours Of The Dark, and American writer Karen Hao will be talking about her new book Empire Of AI.
Open House director Kieran Gilmore said the festival puts a spotlight on Bangor's creative talent.
'This year's festival has some of our finest local artists performing in iconic venues throughout the city,' he said.
'From an interview with Gary Lightbody about his new book, to a conversation between Declan Lawn, Bafta-winning writer of Blue Lights, and local author Colin Bateman, to an intimate launch of a new EP by King Cedar, we're bringing around 100 events across a whole range of art forms.'
The Open House summer season gets under way on Friday July 4, with the annual Pickie to Pier swimming race, although the Seaside Revival Vintage Festival will not take place this year because of development work on the sea front.

Joe McFadden to lead cast in new tour of Shawshank Redemption
ACTOR Joe McFadden has been announced as the leading man in a new British tour of The Shawshank Redemption. Adapted from a novella by Stephen King, the acclaimed stage production from Bill Kenwright Ltd returns with a string of shows later this year, including seven performances in Belfast. Second-generation Irish actor McFadden will star as Andy Dufresne, who was first played by Tim Robbins in the acclaimed 1994 movie that garnered seven Oscar nominations. However, he is no stranger to the stage, having played Caractacus Potts in the British tour of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang in 2006-07 and the Narrator in The Rocky Horror Show in 2023. Last year, he starred alongside second-generation Irish actress Stacey Dooley in the sixth West End production of Danny Robins' acclaimed play, 2:22 A Ghost Story. Friendship and hope Based on King's Rita Hayworth and Shawshank Redemption from his 1982 collection, Different Seasons, the stage production examines friendship and hope behind the claustrophobic bars of a maximum-security facility. In the story, Andy is handed a double life sentence for the brutal murders of his wife and her lover, despite his protests of innocence. Incarcerated in the notorious Shawshank facility, he quickly learns that no one can survive alone. Andy strikes up an unlikely friendship with the prison fixer, Red — played by Morgan Freeman in the 1994 movie — and things start to take a slight turn for the better. However, when the warden decides to bully Andy into subservience and exploit his talents for accountancy, a desperate plan is quietly hatched. Reg E. It has been adapted by Dave Johns and Co. Tyrone native Owen O'Neill. The pair originally adapted the story more than 15 years ago, when it had its world premiere at the Gaiety Theatre in Dublin in 2009, presented by Lane Productions and directed by Peter Sheridan. In that production, Kevin Anderson (Sleeping With the Enemy) played Andy and the late Reg E. Cathey (The Wire) took on the role of Red. The latest Bill Kenwright Ltd production — directed by David Esbjornson — begins its tour at the Theatre Royal in Windsor on September 5 and concludes at the Grand Theatre in Leeds on May 23, 2026. BBC rolls out star-studded line-up for All-Ireland Hurling final
It is the biggest day of the year for hurling fans as Croke Park is packed to the brim with 82,300 as Cork and Tipperary battle it out for the Liam MacCarthy Cup. As has become tradition, today's final is being shown live on the BBC and the British broadcaster have gone all out and have enlisted the help of some massive stars to help with today's television broadcast. Actor Paul Mescal and horse racing icon Rachael Blackmore both appeared ahead of the final to speak with BBC presenters from the comforts of the Davin Stand. Mescal is no stranger to Croke Park having played there as an underage star for Kildare as a youngster, and the Gladiator II star spoke about how important All-Ireland final day is to GAA fans in Ireland and around the world. "All-Ireland final day is one of the most special days in the calendar and to be here with dad, we're so lucky to be getting free tickets to an All-Ireland final," he stated. The actor added: "I'm so glad it's being shown across the UK because it is a huge cultural moment every year. It's a massive event for Irish people across the world. It's not just the people living in Ireland, it's for the diaspora and everybody else." Joining Mescal and Blackmore in the stand was singer Tom Grennan, who was appearing at his first ever All-Ireland final: "This is amazing. This has been a dream of mine to come to an All-Ireland. "I've got my dad with me. He has worn the Offaly shirt, but to be here and just to see everybody mixing... like if you saw this at a North London derby that wouldn't be the case. You'd have one half and one half where everybody's mixes, a sea of different colours. It's a beautiful thing." While Mescal and Grennan have no dog in the fight this afternoon, proud Tipperary native Blackmore will be cheering on the Premier County and was even wearing a Tipp jersey as she showed her support for the men in blue and gold. As it stands, Cork lead Tipp by six points on a scoreline of 1-16 to 0-13 after a brilliant goal from Shane Barrett on the stroke of half time.
