Tai Po Dream Catchers? Football club to change name as protesters call truce
Francis Yip, who bankrolls Tai Po alongside wife Catherine, said on Sunday he had lodged an application with the Football Association of Hong Kong, China (HKFA) to change the name, and anticipated beginning next season under the new banner.
Fans vehemently protested against the move during the victory over North District on January 18. On Sunday, however, they showed no ill-feeling towards the owners, even as Tai Po's title hopes were dealt a setback by a 2-1 home loss to Kitchee. A prominent fans' group, 12th Green Warriors, had called for a truce on Saturday.
Yip said he wanted the club to have 'a more suitable name, [which reflects] helping youngsters chase their dreams'. Tai Po's Pang Yam-pung (right) vies with Newcastle's Alfie Harrison in last May's Soccer Sevens. Photo: Yik Yeung-man
'Now they know our reasons, the supporters understand,' he said. 'They know they should support the players; we have to oppose our opponents, not ourselves. We think this will make the club more attractive overall. It is not a commercial move.'

Wrexham chief tells Championship rivals: be afraid if we have shot at promotion in December
The Hollywood fairy tale that is Wrexham AFC is only just beginning, the club's CEO said on Friday as the Welsh side continued its unlikely quest to crack the Premier League. Since Hollywood stars Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney bought the club in 2020, Wrexham have become the first team to earn three successive promotions from England's national league to the second-tier Championship. Wrexham will play relegated former Premier League club Southampton in their Championship opener on August 9, a prospect Michael Williamson described as a 'pinch yourself' moment. Speaking in Wellington during the club's pre-season tour to Australia and New Zealand, the CEO said success was more than simply making up the numbers. 'The expectation is, and Rob McElhenney will say that he doesn't know what this word is, but obviously we need to consolidate our position in the Championship,' Williamson said. 'If we are able to find ourselves halfway through the season, in December, in that 3-4-5-6-7 position, people should be worried about us.

Manchester City sign record kit deal with Puma
Manchester City sign record kit deal with Puma City's 10-year contract extension with Puma is among the largest kit partnerships in Premier League history. Photo: Reuters Manchester City have signed a blockbuster new kit deal with Puma worth a reported £1 billion over the next 10 years. City's extension of their contract with Puma ranks as the largest kit manufacturing partnership in Premier League history. Having agreed a £65 million per year deal with the German company in 2019, City's new arrangement is believed to be worth a £100 million per year until 2035, according to British media reports. That figure shatters the £90 million per year deal signed by Manchester United with Adidas in 2023. Spanish giants Real Madrid and Barcelona are both reported to have kit deals worth in excess of £100 million per year. "We joined forces with Puma with the ambition to challenge ourselves and go beyond the expectations. We have achieved this and more over the last six seasons," City Football Group chief executive Ferran Soriano said. "Puma have seamlessly integrated into our organisation, and we have enjoyed many historic moments together, engaging fans globally," he added. Puma chief executive Arthur Hoeld added: "Puma's partnership with Manchester City has been a great success both on and off the pitch. Trophies, a perfect stage for our performance products and commercial success were exceptional." City's massive deal comes after the club's first season without major silverware since 2016-17. Pep Guardiola's men finished third in the Premier League after winning the title for the previous four seasons. They also suffered a shock FA Cup final defeat against Crystal Palace and crashed out of the recent Club World Cup in the last 16 against Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal. (AFP)

Hong Kong football clubs in dark over new season but pushing ahead with signings
While Hong Kong's best are in South Korea for the East Asian Football Championship, the city's top clubs have been accelerating their preparations for the new campaign. Not that Tai Po, Eastern, Kitchee, Lee Man and the rest know precisely what they are readying themselves for. The local football association has confirmed Eastern District will be promoted into a new 10-team Premier League, as first reported by the Post But there is no word on when the new campaign will begin or the design of the competition. It has been suggested teams could play each other twice before the league is equally split into championship and relegation rounds for a total of 22 matches per side. Last season, which started on August 30, featured nine sides playing each other three times. The least prestigious of the three cup competitions, the Sapling Cup, appears to have breathed its last. Chan Man-chun, the Southern chairman and convenor of the Hong Kong Premier League committee, has floated the idea of reviving the League Cup, which was discontinued in 2016, with no restriction on foreign players.
