MakeMyTrip posts 22% profit growth despite travel headwinds in Q1
BENGALURU: Online travel firm MakeMyTrip reported a 22.6 per cent year-on-year rise in net profit to $25.8 million for the quarter ended June 30, 2025, even as disruptions in May and June dented leisure travel demand.
Revenue grew 7.8 per cent in constant currency terms to $268.8 million, supported by gains in bus ticketing and international travel segments.
CEO Rajesh Magow said the quarter began with strong momentum in April but was impacted by macro events, including a geopolitical standoff and a passenger aircraft crash in India, which temporarily disrupted air supply and consumer sentiment. 'We do see the sentiment coming back… this is like a temporary disruption.
I don't think it's going to change the structural shift that was happening on consumer behaviour,' he said during the post-earnings analyst call.
While domestic air and holiday package bookings slowed, MakeMyTrip's international air segment grew over 21 per cent, helping push its share of international air bookings to a record 42 per cent. CFO Mohit Kabra noted that this diversification allowed the company to "dial up" international offerings and corporate travel when domestic leisure demand was muted.

Adjusted operating profit rose 21 per cent to $47.3 million. The company also saw strong performance in its bus and ground transport business, with adjusted margin in bus ticketing rising 34.1 per cent year-on-year in constant currency. Inventory growth in this segment was led by new sleeper and Volvo buses, especially on long routes.
Hotel-room nights booked grew 17 per cent, with particular strength in standalone online hotel bookings and alternative accommodations, such as homestays and hostels.
International hotel bookings accounted for over a quarter of hotel and package revenue for the first time. However, Magow clarified that average rates held steady despite concerns of potential downtrading, saying there was 'nothing material' in terms of pricing pressure.
The company ended the quarter with $804 million in cash and cash equivalents. Following a recent $3.1 billion capital raise through ordinary shares and convertible notes, MakeMyTrip repurchased and cancelled 34.3 million Class B shares from Trip.com, making the Chinese travel giant its largest minority shareholder with a 16.9 per cent stake.
On a potential India listing, Kabra reiterated that a domestic IPO remains a medium-term consideration. 'The eventual listing in India is going to be more linked to fundraising plans as and when they materialise,' he said.

File image/ Reuters Thousands of license applications by US companies to export goods and technology around the globe, including to China, are in limbo because turmoil at the agency in charge of approving them has left it nearly paralyzed, two sources said. While US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick has become a familiar face touting President Donald Trump's tariff and trade deals, sources said the export bureau under Lutnick's command has failed to issue expected new rules, stifled communications with industry representatives, pushed out experts, and lost staff through buyouts and resignations. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD Shipments of artificial intelligence chips from Nvidia to China are the most high-profile example of licenses not being swiftly approved. The company said July 14 the government assured it licenses would be granted for its H20 chip, and it hoped to start deliveries soon. Lutnick and other officials confirmed sales would be allowed. But sources said this week no licenses have yet been issued, and billions of dollars of AI chip orders are at stake. One US official said the backlog of license applications is the lengthiest in more than three decades. A spokesperson for Nvidia declined to comment. The Department of Commerce did not respond to a request for comment. The turmoil and resulting inaction at an agency tasked with promoting overseas trade and safeguarding American technology are alarming both those seeking tougher restrictions on exports to China and companies trying to sell their wares abroad. 'Licensing is how the US does business and competes globally,' said Meghan Harris, who served on the National Security Council in the first Trump administration and has worked at Commerce. 'Delays and unpredictability put us at an unnecessary disadvantage.' The Commerce Department's Bureau of Industry and Security averaged 38 days per export license application in fiscal year 2023, the most recent data available, denying 2% of 37,943 applications. STORY CONTINUES BELOW THIS AD The license process enforces US export restrictions in an effort to make sure sensitive goods and technology do not reach countries or entities whose use of the items could harm US national security. Some staff have criticized Jeffrey Kessler, who became BIS undersecretary in March, saying he has micromanaged the bureau and failed to communicate adequately. Kessler did not respond to a request for comment. At a staff meeting soon after he took office, Kessler urged BIS staff to limit communications with company representatives and industry officials, according to two additional sources, who said he later asked for all meetings to be entered on a spreadsheet. Getting approval from Kessler's office to attend meetings with other government agencies has also been tricky, those sources said. Sources spoke anonymously because they were not authorized to speak publicly. Frustration among exporters Frustration is growing within US industry. 'We're seeing whole sectors where there is no movement or indication if or when licenses will be issued," including license applications for semiconductor manufacturing equipment worth billions of dollars, said Sean Stein, president of the US-China Business Council. 'The longer we have the delay, the more market share we're going to lose." Jim Anzalone, president of Compliance Assurance, a Florida-based trade consultancy, said he has seen delays in license approvals for sensors, radars, and sonar to Latin America and other parts of the world. 'There's nothing official about what the policy is and when the backlog would be cleared,' he said. He has received denials sporadically after submitting some two dozen applications months ago to export semiconductor manufacturing equipment to China, including four denials on Wednesday, he added. Sources stressed that some licenses are getting approved, especially exports to allied countries, and they noted that some communication with companies continues, especially around license applications. Commerce is also delaying regulatory changes. The agency said in May it would rescind and replace a Biden administration rule before it went into effect that month restricting where AI chips can be exported, but the agency has not done so yet. 'No formal talks yet with US on F-35 buy': Government in Lok Sabha
NEW DELHI: India has not had any formal talks with the US over the purchase of fifth-generation F-35 fighter jets, the external affairs ministry informed the Lok Sabha Friday. Responding to a written query, MoS (MEA) Kirti Vardhan Singh said the India-US joint statement following the meeting between PM Narendra Modi and US President Donald Trump in Feb 2025 had mentioned that US will undertake a review of its policy on selling fifth-generation fighters (such as the F-35) and undersea systems to India. "No formal discussions have been held as yet on this issue," added the minister. A news agency reported on Thursday that India had told the US that it is not interested in purchasing the F-35 jets. The minister was also asked whether the govt has reviewed the dynamics relating to US military assistance proposals and India's autonomy in terms of foreign policy, given its strategic implications, especially in a conflict scenario involving third-party mediation. The minister responded by saying that the India-US partnership has benefited from growing strategic convergence & cooperation and that India closely evaluates all its external partnerships, including those in the defence and strategic domains, through the prism of its national interest and commitment to strategic autonomy. Centre clears Itarsi-Nagpur fourth rail line project
Bhopal: The PM Narendra Modi-led Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs has approved the Itarsi-Nagpur fourth railway line project. CM Mohan Yadav expressed gratitude to Modi for sanctioning this initiative. The approved railway line, stretching approximately 297 km between Itarsi and Nagpur, will strengthen railway connectivity in central India. According to Yadav, this development will benefit Narmadapuram, Betul, Pandhurna (Madhya Pradesh), and Nagpur (Maharashtra). The project will facilitate easier access for pilgrims travelling to the Jyotirlinga temples from Mahakaleshwar, Omkareshwar to Srisailam and Rameswaram. The 339 km track will encompass 37 stations, 36 major bridges, 415 minor bridges, 2 road over bridges, 74 road under bridges, four tunnels, and two rail over bridges. The connection will link four Jyotirlinga temples: Mahakaleshwar and Omkareshwar in Madhya Pradesh, Srisailam in Andhra Pradesh, and Rameshwaram in Tamil Nadu, enhancing the pilgrim experience and regional tourism.
