Vikings QB J.J. McCarthy expected to play in preseason opener
Vikings coach Kevin O'Connell confirmed McCarthy's return to action, a year after the QB suffered a right knee injury in Minnesota's first game of the 2024 preseason. O'Connell, though, did not specify how many reps McCarthy would see not only in Saturday's matchup but also the remainder of the preseason.
"You'd love to play him as much as possible," O'Connell said, "but I think with those two days of joint practice [with the Patriots], and the type of reps that the other guys on the offense will get from a physicality and workload standpoint, we'll more than likely use those two days as our real days.
"Obviously, that's subject to change based upon on how those go, how we feel coming out of those. If we need to get a little more work, we will. Then we'll assess that final preseason game as it comes."
After passing for 6,226 yards and 49 touchdowns at Michigan, where he led the Wolverines to the national championship in his final season, McCarthy underwent surgery to repair a torn meniscus that sidelined him for his entire rookie campaign. A second procedure was performed a few months later to address swelling.
Now, McCarthy sits atop the depth chart and has taken every practice snap with the first team.

Though Ramsey is well-regarded by Villa boss Unai Emery, his status as a homegrown player means an eventual transfer fee represents pure profit in the club accounts – crucial in the current era of Premier League spending rules. Villa have been willing to listen to offers for Ramsey since the transfer window opened and are thought to value him at about £40million.

Aston Villa beat Crystal Palace to sign striker Evann Guessand
Aston Villa have agreed a deal to sign striker Evann Guessand from Nice for an initial €25m (£22m). The 24-year-old is due to travel to Birmingham on Wednesday for a medical and to finalise a five-year contract with Villa who have beaten off competition from other Premier League clubs. Villa faced competition on Tuesday from Crystal Palace and quickly agree the deal for Guessand who with his dynamism and desire to cover distance has been likened in style to Morgan Rogers. Villa do not regard him as a replacement for the England international who has attracted interest from Arsenal and who they want to keep and offer a new contract. Guessand will be Villa's biggest signing of the summer so far. The total transfer fee for Guessand could be closer to €35m (£30m) when all the potential add-ons for the Cote d'Ivoire international are included. Telegraph Sport highlighted in May how in demand Guessand would be this summer having set his heart on a move to the Premier League. Guessand, who has been likened to his hero Didier Drogba, was the second highest-rated forward in French football last season behind Paris Saint-Germain's Ousmane Dembele who has been tipped to win the Ballon D'Or. Villa showed interest in signing Guessand in January before they agreed a loan deal for Marcus Rashford and they have now returned and agreed a deal with Nice who were resigned to losing him this summer once their valuation was met. Speaking after the final game of the Ligue 1 season in May, Nice head coach Franck Haise was pessimistic about the club's chances of retaining Guessand. In July he said there was a '90 per cent' chance the player would leave. Guessand has also drawn interest from a host of other clubs including Palace, Tottenham Hotspur and West Ham United but Villa have made their move and he has chosen to join them. Guessand turned down a move to Saudi Arabian club Neom FC as he made it clear he wanted to pursue his career in England. There was also strong interest from Bundesliga clubs. Guessand, who was born in Ajaccio and played for France at youth level before opting to switch to Ivory Coast, is strong and direct and has been likened to Drogba. There is a photograph of the two meeting, four years ago in the Ivorian city of Abidjan, where they had dinner together and they have stayed in touch ever since.

Reds place LHP Nick Lodolo (finger) on 15-day IL
August 5 - The Cincinnati Reds placed left-hander Nick Lodolo on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a blister on his left index finger. Lodolo left the series opener against the Chicago Cubs on Monday after just 1 2/3 innings. Five relievers went the rest of the way for the Reds, who won 3-2 and sit three games out of the National League's third and final wild-card berth entering Tuesday. Lodolo, 27, is 8-6 with a 3.05 ERA in 23 appearances (all starts) this season. A first-round draft pick (seventh overall) by Cincinnati in 2019, Lodolo is 23-20 with a 4.02 ERA in 70 career appearances (all starts) with the team. Also on Tuesday, the Reds recalled right-hander Yosver Zulueta from Triple-A Louisville. Zulueta, 27, has a 3.86 ERA without a decision in two relief appearances this season with Cincinnati. He allowed one run on no hits over 2 1/3 innings. He made 12 appearances in 2024, his first major league season, pitching 16 1/3 innings and giving up nine earned runs with 20 strikeouts and seven walks.
