Flatbed truck crashes into Shriver Job Corps Center in Devens, Massachusetts

CBS News21-07-2025
A flatbed truck crashed into a building on the Shriver Job Corps Center campus in Devens, Massachusetts on Monday morning.
The crash on Jackson Road happened at about 10:30 a.m. Massachusetts State Police said several people, including the truck driver, were hospitalized with injuries.
WBZ-TV's helicopter showed part of the truck inside the horseshoe-shaped building. It appeared that the truck first drove through a metal fence and scraped the side of the building, taking out windows in the process.
No other information about the crash was immediately available. It's being investigated by State Police.
The Devens building is one of three Job Corps centers in Massachusetts that serve 900 young people in the state. CBS News reported last month that the futures of thousands of students in the Job Corps are in limbo as the Trump administration seeks to shut down the nationwide program.

Trump Media CEO Nunes loses defamation lawsuit over Rachel Maddow show

By Jonathan Stempel NEW YORK (Reuters) -A federal judge dismissed a defamation lawsuit by Devin Nunes, the former California congressman and now chief executive of Trump Media and Technology Group, against NBCUniversal over a comment by Rachel Maddow about his dealings with a suspected Russian agent. U.S. District Judge Kevin Castel in Manhattan ruled on Friday that no reasonable jury could find Maddow demonstrated actual malice toward Nunes in March 2021 when discussing a package addressed to him from pro-Russia Ukrainian legislator Andrii Derkach on MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show." Nunes received the package in December 2019, when the Republican was the ranking member of the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Maddow told viewers that Nunes "refused to hand it over to the FBI, which is what you should do if you get something from somebody who is sanctioned by the U.S. as a Russian agent." Nunes said Maddow knew the package was turned over promptly. She and her executive producer, who were not defendants, claimed to rely on other sources when creating the segment. NBCUniversal is a unit of Comcast. In a 24-page decision, Castel said Nunes, a longtime supporter of U.S. President Donald Trump, failed to show Maddow was aware of a July 2020 article in Politico saying the FBI had received the package. The judge found no clear and convincing evidence that Maddow had a "high degree of awareness of probable falsity," or any evidence that "defendant's admitted political bias caused defendant to act with a reckless disregard of the truth." Nunes' lawyers and Trump Media did not immediately respond on Monday to requests for comment. Lawyers for NBCUniversal did not immediately respond to similar requests. The U.S. Treasury Department sanctioned Derkach in September 2020 for trying to interfere in that year's U.S. presidential election to help Trump, who lost to Democrat Joe Biden. Federal prosecutors in Brooklyn, New York charged Derkach in December 2022 with unrelated money laundering and sanctions violations. He remains at large. The case is Nunes v NBCUniversal Media Inc, U.S. District Court, Southern District of New York, No. 22-01633.

EU to suspend US tariff countermeasures for 6 months

BRUSSELS (Reuters) -The European Union will suspend its two packages of countermeasures to U.S. tariffs for six months following a deal with U.S. President Donald Trump, a Commission spokesperson said on Monday. The EU-U.S. agreement leaves many questions open, including tariff rates on spirits, and Trump's executive order last week setting tariffs on most EU goods at 15% did not include carve-outs such as for cars and car parts. EU officials have said they expect more executive orders to follow soon. "The EU continues to work with the U.S. to finalise a Joint Statement, as agreed on 27 July," the spokesperson said in a statement. "With these objectives in mind, the Commission will take the necessary steps to suspend by 6 months the EU's countermeasures against the US, which were due to enter into force on 7 August." The retaliatory tariffs are in two parts: one in response to U.S. steel and aluminium duties, and the other to Trump's baseline and car tariffs. Sign in to access your portfolio

Exclusive-Genstar explores $5 billion sale of automotive software maker OEConnection, sources say

By Milana Vinn (Reuters) -Genstar Capital is exploring a sale of OEConnection, which it aims to value the automotive software provider also backed by Ford and General Motors at as much as $5 billion, including debt, people familiar with the matter said. The private equity firm has tapped investment bankers at Evercore to advise on the OEConnection sale process, which is expected to launch later this year, said the sources, who requested anonymity to speak about matters that are not public. Genstar declined to comment, while Evercore and OEConnection were not immediately available to comment. Fairlawn, Ohio-based OEConnection, established in 2000 through a partnership involving original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) including Ford and General Motors, provides systems that help facilitate the sale and distribution of original replacement parts involving suppliers, dealers, and repair shops. OEConnection generates $200 million in earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), and $400 million in annual revenue, the sources said, adding that the business would likely be valued at more than 20x EBITDA, with estimates ranging between $4 billion and $5 billion. Genstar acquired OEConnection from fellow buyout firm Providence Equity in 2019. As part of that deal, automakers Ford and General Motors retained minority stakes in the company.
