What Is Qwen VLo? Alibaba's Launches Image Generation Model, to Compete with OpenAI and Google
The advanced AI tool has been developed to create, transform, and comprehend visuals through text and image prompts and represents yet another huge milestone in China's aspirations to take the global lead in AI.
Launched recently, Qwen VLo is building on the success of earlier models QwenVL and Qwen2. 5 VL, but with a substantial step up in quality and control. The new model employs a progressive approach to generation, constructing images incrementally from top to bottom and left to right. This approach offers greater accuracy, especially in detailed or complex visual edits.
Qwen VLo can efficiently understand user guidelines with open-ended descriptions, like- changing artistic style, applying weather effects to a scene, or time period of a scene. It is capapble of taking instruction in multiple languages, including Chinese and English.
Unlike previous designs, Qwen VLo is able to retain crucial details while making the changes. For instance, if a user wants to make only a color adjustment, it doesn't change parts of the image that are not directly affected. This also makes it great for professionals who need to design posters, illustrations, banners, and social media graphics.
One of its impressive features is multiple image input, in which users can upload multiple images and instruct the AI to combine and modify them together. For example, placing products inside a basket based on user commands. Although this feature is not fully launched yet, it illustrates the capabilities of the model.
Qwen VLo also features dynamic resolution training, where it can resize images into formats such as 1:1, 3:4 or 16:9. With all these impressive attributes, Alibaba advises that the model is still in the preview stage and that some errors or inconsistencies might occur.
Alibaba, best known for e-commerce, is making a big bet on AI. Its CEO, Eddie Wu recently stated the company's future lies in developing human-level AI systems. In February, Alibaba announced that it would spend $52 billion over the next three years on AI-focused infrastructure.

Hong Kong May retail sales increase 2.4%
[HONG KONG] Hong Kong's retail sales by value rose 2.4 per cent in May from a year earlier, the first increase in more than a year, government data showed on Wednesday (Jul 2). Sales increased to HK$31.3 billion (S$5.1 billion), the first expansion since February 2024. In April, retail sales fell 2.3 per cent compared with the same month a year before. In volume terms, May retail sales increased 1.9 per cent from a year earlier, compared with a revised 3.3 per cent decline in April. May visitor arrivals rose to 4.08 million, up 20 per cent from the same month a year ago, data from the Hong Kong Tourism Board showed. That compared with 3.85 million in April, 3.82 million in March and 3.67 million in February. The number of mainland Chinese visitors stood at 3.12 million in May, up 19 per cent from a year ago. That compares with 2.81 million in April, 2.75 million in March and 2.77 million in February. However, many visitors from mainland China are visiting only for a day and keeping a tight rein on spending. At the same time, local residents are spending more across the border, taking advantage of the Hong Kong US dollar's relative strength against the Chinese yuan. 'While the retail sector continues to adapt to the changes in consumption patterns, the government's proactive efforts in promoting tourism and mega events, in tandem with the increase in employment earnings and sustained steady growth of the mainland economy, will help bolster consumption sentiment and support the consumption market,' a spokesman for Hong Kong's government said. Sales of jewellery, watches, clocks and valuable gifts fell 3.2 per cent year on year in May after a 1.7 per cent drop in April. Sales of clothing, footwear and allied products climbed 0.3 per cent year on year in May after a 5.5 per cent decline in April. REUTERS

Alibaba Cloud launches global AI innovation hub in Singapore, two data centres in Malaysia, Philippines
[SINGAPORE] Alibaba's cloud computing arm on Wednesday (Jul 2) launched a global artificial intelligence (AI) innovation hub in Singapore, which will support over 5,000 businesses and 100,000 developers globally. Alibaba Cloud's virtual innovation hub, named AI Global Competency Centre (AIGCC) was unveiled at Alibaba Cloud's global summit held at Shangri-La Hotel. The fully-online facility will be where more than 1,000 companies and startups can meet to co-develop next-generation AI solutions, said Alibaba Cloud. The launch comes as the Chinese tech giant completes a decade of operations in Singapore, which has been the company's international headquarters from the start. Responding to queries from The Business Times, Alibaba Cloud said that Singapore's strong digital infrastructure, pro-innovation policies and deep talent pool make it the 'natural choice to lead the next phase of AI growth in the region'. The innovation hub will provide companies access to advanced AI models and powerful computing resources to accelerate experimentation and deployment. Its AI Innovation Lab will offer token credits, curated datasets and personalised support tailored to real-world scenarios and industry needs. Sign Up Sign Up Businesses and developers interested in taking part in AIGCC will need to apply through Alibaba Cloud's designated channels. Those seeking access to the lab will need to show a relevant use case or project. The company said: 'Organisations and startups involved in developing next-generation AI solutions across industries such as finance, healthcare, logistics, manufacturing, retail and energy will be particularly encouraged to participate.' Alibaba Cloud also announced its partnership with more than 120 universities and institutions globally the same day. It targets to train 100,000 AI professionals a year. Already, it has been working with local universities, including Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), to nurture the 'next generation of tech talent in the country'. NTU and Alibaba launched the Alibaba-NTU Global e-Sustainability CorpLab in 2024 to advance smart technologies for a greener society. Over the next five years, up to 200 scientists and engineers from the two sides will team up for global research in areas such as energy-efficient AI and green cloud computing. In 2024, SUSS and Alibaba Cloud worked together to launch the Alibaba Cloud Prize Competition to encourage innovation in integrated care using cloud computing and AI. Beyond Singapore, Alibaba Cloud on Wednesday also announced the opening of two data centres in South-east Asia. A new centre opened in Malaysia on Tuesday (Jul 1), the group's third such facility in the country. Alibaba Cloud is also slated to open a second data centre in the Philippines in October. In the first half of 2025, Alibaba Cloud announced infrastructure investments in Thailand, Mexico and South Korea. 'This growing network ensures that Alibaba Cloud can meet the rising global demand for secure, resilient and scalable cloud services.' Earlier this year, Alibaba Group said it would set aside at least 380 billion yuan (S$67.5 billion) over the next three years to advance its cloud computing and AI infrastructure. The development of data centres is part of the investment plan, said Alibaba Cloud.

Baidu overhauls search engine with AI features, voice function
[BEIJING] Baidu is overhauling China's most popular search engine with AI features and a voice function in its most sweeping revamp for years. The Beijing-based company said it wants to make its mobile app more like an AI chatbot that can help users with writing, drawing and trip planning tasks. It will focus less on keywords and more on natural language searches and also allow users to perform searches by voice in several Chinese dialects. Baidu's search engine has grown bloated and overly complicated in recent years, executives told reporters on Wednesday (Jul 2) at an event in Beijing. 'Baidu search has to change, and we are voluntarily looking for changes,' said Zhao Shiqi, the company's search boss. 'We don't intend to beat others, we need to beat our former self.' Baidu's search platform now contends with social apps like ByteDance's Douyin and AI-native browsers for eyeballs. Its online marketing revenue has declined for four consecutive quarters, underscoring its loss of users. Executives have said that AI-generated search content would eventually help advertising pick up. Baidu on Wednesday also rolled out its first image-to-video model to compete with the likes of ByteDance and Kuaishou. Executives hope the AI generation function will help marketers create engaging videos on Baidu's social feeds. Baidu counts on AI to drive inference demand for its nascent cloud division, which competes with much larger rivals like Alibaba Group Holding It's also hoping that its Ernie foundation models will stay competitive against DeepSeek, seeding an entire ecosystem of AI-native applications. In April, Baidu rolled out Ernie 4.5 Turbo and Ernie X1 Turbo, the latest versions of its flagship foundation and reasoning models that it said are faster and cheaper than previous iterations. The X1 Turbo was designed to compete with open-sourced models like Alibaba's Qwen and DeepSeek, which have gained greater recognition within the global developer community. BLOOMBERG
