Birmingham bookstores to celebrate Independent Bookstore Day this weekend

Yahoo26-04-2025
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WIAT) — Saturday is Independent Bookstore Day, and some locally owned bookstores around Birmingham are getting ready to celebrate.
Created by the American Booksellers Association, Independent Bookstore Day is held each year on the last Saturday in April to celebrate non-corporate bookstores across the country.
'It's sort of like a Christmas in the indie bookselling world,' said Kristen Iskandrian, co-owner of Thank You Books in Birmingham. 'It's a day to celebrate the store, the community around the store. Bookstores around the country often celebrate and do so in different ways with events, programs and giveaways. It's sort of intended to be an all-day party, and the real focus of it is to draw attention to the importance of independent bookstores in local economies and the importance of small businesses in our communities.'
The celebration at Thank You Books will last from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and will feature a story time, exclusive deals, a happy hour and more.
'There will be a craft for kids and coffee for the adults. We have some really cool giveaways, including a Warby Parker $95 gift card, as well as some other fun items. We have a really cute Richard Scarry 'Lowly Worm' photo booth that we'll set up outside, and we'll have a camera so we can take photos of folks for little keepsakes that they can take home with them,' Iskandrian said.

The slogan for Thank You Books is 'Find your book. Find your people,' and Iskandrian says there are plenty of ways to get involved.
'We feel so lucky to get to be an actual neighborhood bookstore, so we always want to center and celebrate our neighborhood,' Iskandrian said.
'We are so busy with events and programming that's dotting the calendar over the next few months, and the best way to stay in the know about that stuff is to sign up for our newsletter on our website,' she added.
A list of the upcoming author events, book clubs and other events being offered by Thank You Books can be found here.
Little Professor, another independently owned bookstore, will host an Indie Bookstore Day celebration at both its Homewood and Pepper Place locations.
From 9 a.m. 2 p.m. Saturday, Little Professor will host a 'Local Love Market' at their Homewood location, giving people the chance to buy products from local artists and small businesses. Other events hosted by can be found here.
More information on Independent Bookstore Day can be found on the Alabama Booksellers Association's website. More independently owned bookstores in Alabama can be found here.

Love Is Blind's Emma Willis reveals secret to marriage is 'sticking through the s***'

Emma Willis and Matt Willis reflect on their 17-year marriage with Yahoo UK Love Is Blind UK hosts Emma and Matt Willis say the secret to their 17-year marriage is "sticking through the s***". Together, they are hosting the second series of Love Is Blind — where contestants hope to fall in love without ever having met their partner face-to-face. As one of the most popular couples in UK showbiz, the married presenters are a good fit for the role of the hosts. Emma and Matt, who tied the knot in 2008, confessed that everyone wants to know: What's the secret to their successful marriage? Initially, the couple were stumped for an answer despite having been married for 17 years and raising their three children together: Isabelle, Ace and Trixie. "Do you know what it is? You feel like you're going, well, we have the answers to love!" Matt told Yahoo UK. Expanding on his answer, the Busted star explained, "The thing is, you balls it up on the way [with love]. It's... are you ready to go through the hard times? To go through it, I think. "Because it's not easy being with someone for many, many years, but at the end of the day, do you love that person? And do you like them? And do you want to be with them forever?" Emma said: "Are you willing to stick through the s***?" Then she added: "And so far, we have." Matt agreed: "Absolutely, absolutely." What isn't a secret is how much fun Emma and Matt are having working on Love Is Blind together. They were already hooked on the franchise after watching the fourth series of the American version of Love Is Blind before landing their jobs on the UK version of the show. "We love it, don't we?" Emma said. Playfully, she added to her husband: "You love it." Cheeky Matt pretended to have to say: "I do love it. I love it very much." But he did agree: "I genuinely do, I genuinely do [love it]." Love Is Blind UK casting There are 28 brave singletons putting their hearts on the line for the second series of Love Is Blind UK. And that comes with an element of risk. At first, Matt is sure a legally binding wedding is the "biggest risk" of taking part in the show. Interestingly, in Channel 4's Married At First Sight UK, the weddings are not legally binding. Netflix's Love Is Blind is offering the singletons the chance to get married for real on TV. Matt said that a wedding is "the ultimate declaration of love". "It's like I choose you forever," he said. "There's nothing really out there that does that... It's a massive thing. It's like I choose you above everyone else forever... That's a pretty big thing." Emma identified heartbreak being a risk for those involved. "Heartbreak is the biggest risk, isn't it?" She said. "Because you're going on there wanting what the show can provide, and that is hopefully to find somebody that you can fall in love with and spend the rest of your life with and get married to. It does work, but obviously not in every single case, so I would imagine heartbreak is the biggest [risk]." Matt agreed with his wife: "Yeah, I think so [heartbreak is the biggest risk], because they do put themselves out there — and you have to." Behind the scenes, the presenters revealed the great lengths Netflix bosses go to ensure that everyone on the show is genuinely looking for love. "Obviously, occasionally someone slips through the gaps [who isn't genuinely looking for love]," Matt said. "And everyone's so surprised because they're so rigorous with casting. We know what we want on this show. We want to find people that want to get married. And they so good casting, aren't they? "They really go to town. They really get everything from them. So they know where they are." Emma agreed: "They really want to find people that genuinely wanna do it because if you don't, it's a waste of time for everybody really, cos that's not the objective of the show. "And as we said, it's a legal wedding at the end of it, so you can't really go, 'Oh yeah, I'm gonna go on that show and I'll pretend to fall in love with someone and pretend to get married to them' cos it's not pretend. It's actually real [where they legally get married]!" Cheeky Matt added: "If you want to go on something and you know, and look good in a swimsuit, there are other shows you can go on that are more suited for you." Love Is Blind UK series 2 is available to stream from 13 August.

Warwick Davis' daughter pictured with boyfriend following family heartbreak

Annabelle Davis has posted the sweetest snap of her and her boyfriend, Charlie. The actress, who is the daughter of Warwick Davis, has been with Charlie since 2021. Posting to Instagram, the Dumping Ground actress, 28, shared the sweet picture of her and Charlie sitting together. Annabelle looked pretty in a pink floral dress, beige heels and a timeless Louis Vuitton purse, while Charlie wore a classic navy suit as they gazed into each other's eyes. Though the pair largely keep their relationship private, speaking to Sunbox Campers, Annabelle revealed they love to go caravanning. "Growing up my parents and I were away all the time camping and caravanning all the time… "Having grown up with that, it's made me want to go travelling myself." Warwick Davis' new love after heartbreak After the devastating loss of his wife, Samantha Davis, in 2024, Warwick revealed at the BAFTAs that a mystery woman had helped him find love again. The Harry Potter star was honoured with the BAFTA Fellowship earlier this year. He was tearful as he thanked his loved ones for their support throughout his career, including his "wonderful" late wife Samantha, his two children – Annabelle and Harrison – and someone he affectionately nicknamed "Sponge". Hinting at a potential new relationship, Warwick got particularly choked up as he said: "Special mention, too, should go to Sponge, you know who you are. Thank you for showing me that life can still have meaning, and for helping me to laugh and to love again." Though he's keeping Sponge's identity a mystery, he did reveal on the Jonathan Ross Show that his new girlfriend reminds him of Daisy May Cooper's character Kerry Mucklowe in BBC mockumentary series This Country. Warwick's late wife Warwick faced immense heartbreak when his wife, Samantha, died aged 53 in March 2024. Confirming the sad news, the Willow star released an official statement on his wife of 23 years, which said: "My wife and soul-mate, best friend. Devoted mother, My favourite human. My most trusted confidant and an ardent supporter of everything I did in my career, has passed. "The most open, warm person I have ever known. Her passing has left a huge hole in our lives as a family. I miss her hugs. She was a unique character, always seeing the sunny side of life. She had a wicked sense of humour and always laughed at my bad jokes. Samantha and Warwick's two children, Harrison, 21, and Annabelle, 28, joined their dad in the tribute after losing their mum. "Mum is our best friend and we're honoured to have received a love like hers. Her love and happiness carried us through our whole lives." Before Samantha's passing, the family of four were often spotted together at events and film premieres and it was clear that they all had an extremely close relationship.
