MTV Finally Gives Country Music Its Moment

MTV Finally Gives Country Music Its Moment

Forbes12 hours ago
For more than 40 years, the MTV Video Music Awards have ranked one of the biggest and most nights in music. The ceremony has introduced, dropped, and revived dozens of categories throughout the decades, but somehow, in all that time, country music never had a category of its own. Finally, after decades, that's changed.
This year, the VMAs debut Best Country Video, a long‑overdue recognition of one of America's most popular genres. It arrives alongside another new honor, Best Pop Artist, in an expanded list of possible winners.
Six Nominees Compete for First Best Country Video
The inaugural Best Country Video race includes Chris Stapleton's 'Think I'm In Love With You,' Cody Johnson and Carrie Underwood's 'I'm Gonna Love You,' Jelly Roll's 'Liar,' Lainey Wilson's '4x4xU,' Megan Moroney's 'Am I Okay?,' and Morgan Wallen's 'Smile.'
Country Nominees Appear in Other Races
Morgan Wallen is one of just seven artists competing for Artist of the Year, alongside Beyoncé, Kendrick Lamar, and Taylor Swift. He's also in the running for Best Album with I'm The Problem.
Jelly Roll appears in the Best Hip‑Hop category as a featured artist on Eminem's 'Somebody Save Me,' which is also up for Video for Good.
Country Stars Outside the Country Category
Several country acts earn nominations this year without competing in Best Country Video. Ella Langley is up for Best New Artist. Bailey Zimmerman and Luke Combs share a nod in Best Collaboration for 'Backup Plan (Stagecoach Official Music Video),' while Blake Shelton is featured on Post Malone's 'Pour Me A Drink' in that same field, where they'll compete against heavy hitters like Bruno Mars and Lady Gaga, the most nominated artist this year.
Decades of VMAs Without a Country Category
The VMAs have long been known to feature a revolving door of categories. Some were staples for years before being retired, like Best Stage Performance in a Video, Viewer's Choice, Best Concept Video, and Best Video Game Soundtrack. Others — such as Best Latin and Best K‑Pop — were introduced more recently as MTV responded to changing tastes and global music trends.
Somehow, until now, country music never received the same treatment. That's despite the genre's massive sales and streaming numbers, its dominance on the charts, and its own thriving music video tradition. Now, the style, which has been gaining ground recently – even Beyoncé put out a country album – is earning its moment.

Abracadabra! Lady Gaga dominates queer- and diva-filled VMA nominations

The 2025 VMAs are about to be iconic! Darkroom/Interscope Records; Interscope Records; Top Dawg Entertainment/Capitol Records (L-R) Billie Eilish; Lady Gaga; Doechii MTV unveiled its nominations for this year's Video Music Awards and Lady Gaga is leading the pack with 12 nominations. Mother Monster nabbed nods in categories like Video of the Year for her collaborations with Bruno Mars, "Die With a Smile," Artist of the Year, and Best Album. But she wasn't the only queer artist to walk away with an impressive number of nominations. Bille Eilish received six nominations, including Song of the Year for "Birds of a Feather," while Doechii and Miley Cyrus tied for four nods. The pop divas had a strong year (as they always do) and grabbed a couple nods themselves. Sabrina Carpenter and BLACKPINK's Rosé received eight nominations, especially in the big categories like Artist of the Year and Best Pop. Ariana Grande followed closely behind with seven nominations for Brighter Days Ahead, the short film she released in tandem with the extended deluxe version of Eternal Sunshine. Being that it was an off year for Taylor Swift, she only received one nomination in the Artist of the Year category. The 2025 MTV Video Music Awards will take place at the UBS Arena in New York on September 7 and will air on CBS for the first time, as well as Paramount+. Here are some of the highlights from this year's nominations. Lady Gaga Mayhem proved to be a fruitful labor of love for Lady Gaga, her first solo album since 2020's Chromatica was met with critical praise and phenomenal performances at Coachella — and a free concert in Brazil that was reportedly attended by 2.1 million people. This year, she's coming out on top with 12 nominations, the most of any artist this year. At the award ceremony this year, Gaga is up for Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, Song of the Year and six nominations for "Abracadabra" alone. We haven't seen Gaga at the VMAs since her 2020 performance with Ariana Grande when they performed "Rain on Me" — and we all know that she's given us one of (if not, the most) iconic VMAs performances of all time at the 2009 ceremony when she performed "Paparazzi." Sabrina Carpenter After a momentous 2024, Sabrina Carpenter is riding the wave of popularity back to the awards ceremony. She was nominated for eight awards, including Best Pop Artist, Best Album, and Best Direction categories. Shortly after the Short n' Sweet era seemed like it was coming to a close, Carpenter ramped her fans back up with a brand new single earlier this year called "Manchild" and announced a new album, Man's Best Friend, coming at the end of the month. The awards ceremony will be happening just a week after the release of her album, so if she gets announced as a performer, expect a debut performance of a new song. Miley Cyrus Endless Summer Vacation was Miley Cyrus' latest album back in 2023 and it spawned the mega-hit, "Flowers." Now, Cyrus is leaning more into that rock aesthetic with her new album, Something Beautiful. It might not have been the most radio-friendly album, but it still managed to steal the hearts of MTV. She walked away with four nominations including Best Cinematography, Best Art Direction, Best Long Form Video, and Best Pop Artist. Ariana Grande In the intermission between Wicked and Wicked: For Good, Ariana Grande expanded upon her critically acclaimed seventh studio album, Eternal Sunshine, with a deluxe version called Eternal Sunshine: Brighter Days Ahead. The new version of the album goes deeper into the album's theme that plays on the movie Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. And instead of making multiple videos, Grande released a short film comprised of all the new songs. The project resonated emotionally with her fans and MTV, who gave her four nominations for the short film. She nabbed nominations in the Video of Year, Best Pop Artist, Best Pop, and Best Longform Video categories. Bad Bunny Bad Bunny is on a one-man world tour that is starting out with a residency in Puerto Rico and skipping over the rest of the United States entirely before going abroad. These moves are obvious political statements that are all over the music he releases. His sixth studio album, Debí Tirar Más Fotos, is all about paying homage to his home country of Puerto Rico and cherishing the beauty of his Latin heritage. He is not attending award shows, most of the time because he's on tour, but if he wins big this year, maybe he'll bless the audience with an appearance. Benito was nominated in the Artist of the Year, Best Latin, Best Album, and Best Long Form Video categories, the latter being for the short film accompanying his album. Doechii Doechii announced that she is going on a tour across North America yesterday after sharing the news at Lollapalooza the day before. At this year's Grammy Awards, she was the third woman ever to receive an award in the Best Rap Album category after Cardi B and Ms. Lauryn Hill. And on top of this, just a few months later, she made her debut on the Met Gala red carpet. Nothing is stopping Doechii's ascendence, and these four VMA nominations are just another feather to add to her ever-growing cap of accolades. Her song "Anxiety" became a viral hit and now that success is being recognized in four categories at the award ceremony: Video for Good, Best Choreography, Best Hip Hop, and Song of the Year. Lorde Lorde made her comeback this year, and in the time she's been back, we learned so much about her. She started to expand on her thoughts of "broadening" her gender, saying some days she feels like a man and sometimes she feels like a woman. The New Zealander takes us on that journey on her latest album, Virgin. The lead singles, "What Was That" and "Man of the Year," nabbed nominations at this year's MTV VMAs. The former received a nod in the Song of the Year category while the latter received a nom for "Best Art Direction." Lorde also received a nod for Best Pop Artist. Billie Eilish Billie Eilish's own work in Hit Me Hard and Soft, and notably the "Birds of a Feather" single, was nominated for Video of the Year and Song of the Year. Moreover, Eilish's collaboration with Charli XCX on the remix of Brat's "Guess" earned both artists a few nominations: Video for Good, Best Direction, Best Art Direction, Best Editing. Lola Young Lola Young was nominated for Best New Artist. Her song, "Messy," also entered the Best Alternative category. Gigi Perez Another nominee in the Best New Artist category is Gigi Perez. Otherwise, the artist could also win a MTV Push Performance of the Year trophy for her June 2025 performance of "Sailor Song." Charli XCX The "Guess" remix by Charli XCX (featuring Billie Eilish) is nominated for Video for Good, Best Direction, Best Art Direction, Best Editing. XCX was also nominated for Best Pop Artist. Beyoncé Beyoncé only received one nomination for the 2025 VMAs: Artist of the Year. Taylor Swift Just like Beyoncé, Taylor Swift also only received one nomination this year in the Artist of the Year category. This article originally appeared on Out: Abracadabra! BLACKPINK Star Makes History with New K-Pop Record originally appeared on Parade. ROSÉ from BLACKPINK just made history. This year, the New Zealand-born South Korean singer earned eight nominations at this year's MTV Video Music Awards. This achievement not only cements her status as one of K-pop's biggest stars but also breaks the record for the most VMA nominations ever received by a K-pop artist in a single year. The title was originally held by BTS when they received seven nominations in 2021, winning three of those. The 28-year-old singer was nominated for Video of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Collaboration, Best Direction, Best Pop, Best Art Direction and Best Visual Effects for her song "APT." with Bruno Mars. Plus, her song "toxic till the end" from her album rosie was nominated for Best K-Pop. Her fellow BLACKPINK members — JENNIE, LISA, and JISOO — also scored nominations for tracks from their own debut solo albums: JENNIE's "like JENNIE," LISA's "Born Again (featuring Doja Cat and RAYE)" and JISOO's "earthquake." In the fall of 2023, BLACKPINK decided to take a brief break as a group after the end of their Born Pink World Tour to focus on their solo careers. This past year, each member released their own solo album or EP. ROSÉ released rosie in December 2024, which earned major acclaim from fans and critics. But now, BLACKPINK is back in your area. This past summer, the K-pop girl group has been on their DEADLINE World Tour, recently performing in Paris, France, this past weekend. They also released their first song together in two years, titled "JUMP," and the music video hit 100 million views on YouTube on July 25. BLACKPINK will be performing for their fans in Milan on Wednesday. For this year's VMA nominations, Lady Gaga leads with 12 nominations, while Bruno Mars follows with 11 and Kendrick Lamar with 10.
