Col Sanpachai Huvanandana, president of NT, and Wang Helin, chairman and founder of T3 Technology, signed a marketing partnership agreement to enhance NT's service offerings and competitiveness.

Soft power high on the agenda
Thailand is advancing its soft power push, with the country's creative culture playing an increasingly key role, suspended Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said on Tuesday. Ms Paetongtarn, who is also the culture minister, made the comments during her opening speech at the 2nd annual SPLASH -- Soft Power Forum 2025 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center. She underscored the importance of creative culture in her speech. "Creative culture is a soft power that is used all over the world. People are no longer interested in buying just products or services," she said. "Developing soft power is about the experience that was purchased. Buy something that reflects who we are. Our country, in particular, has a rich culture." She explained how the international community values locality. "Locality can have value. This is an important thing for the international community. And importantly, today, no matter what technology it is, we have various social media tools," she said. In this post-pandemic era, she said, Thailand has strengthened its domestic industry foundations. Ms Paetongtarn said the next level is to connect with the world, where Thailand's top five soft power assets -- Thai cuisine, Muay Thai, jewellery, wellness, and filmmaking -- will be enhanced through reconstructed programmes. For example, there is "Thai Cuisina", a new Thai food industry platform that integrates suppliers, supply chains, supermarkets, and buyers from overseas countries worldwide, as well as a cooking learning programme. She said an ongoing programme that encourages film and TV productions in the kingdom involves a 30% cash rebate for productions being made in Thailand. Ms Paetongtarn also spoke about how Thailand is now part of a rapidly changing world. "There are things that we can't predict," she said. Many factors around the world are causing change, leading to the emergence of transforming technologies, she said. Change is constant, she said, adding that being adaptable is a timeless solution to it.

Thai exports face ‘severe harm' if high tariff sticks
Thai exports could contract in the second half of this year if the United States imposes a 36% tariff rate starting next month, business leaders said on Tuesday. Starting on Aug 1, Washington plans to impose a 36% tariff on all Thai products, separate from sectoral tariffs, according to a letter signed by President Donald Trump and issued on Monday. Finance Minister Pichai Chunvajira said the letter was sent before US officials had seen a revised proposal from Thailand, and he expressed optimism that Thai negotiators could get the tariff rate reduced. Dhanakorn Kasetrsuwan, chairman of the Thai National Shippers' Council, said a 36% tariff could severely harm Thailand's export market, particularly as nations such as Vietnam (20%) and Malaysia (25%) currently have significantly lower rates. This could diminish Thailand's competitiveness, leading to a shift in orders to those countries, he said. Moreover, high tariffs could deter foreign investment, with potential investors opting for locations such as Vietnam or Malaysia due to unfavourable tariff conditions in Thailand, said Mr Dhanakorn. He urged the government to study Vietnam's approach, which quickly led to an agreement with Washington, in part by agreeing to eliminate tariffs for all US products as Hanoi did. Mr Dhanakorn said the government must develop a model that equally engages both China and the US, while exploring the possibility of offering zero tariffs on US products. 'A 36% tariff will definitely affect Thai exports, potentially causing them to contract in the latter half of the year. The severity of the downturn will depend on how much higher Thailand's tariffs are compared with those of competitors,' he said. Mr Dhanakorn said the speed at which competitors can replace Thai export orders to the US will be another important factor. The United States accounts for more than 18% of all Thai exports by value. The government must weigh the long-term impact on Thai exports, looking beyond the immediate effect on orders, he said. Poj Aramwattananont, chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and the Thai Board of Trade, said Thailand's negotiating team should promptly revise its proposals for US review, as the tariff enforcement has now been postponed to Aug 1. The government is planning a meeting on Wednesday on tariffs with the Joint Standing Committee on Commerce, Industry and Banking, according to Mr Poj. Commerce Minister Jatuporn Buruspat said the ministry would have discussions with related industries to evaluate the impacts and plan appropriate countermeasures. 'The export structure will inevitably change regardless of the tariff rates,' he said. 'We will explore various strategic models, including the possibility of reducing tariffs on US products to zero.' Team Thailand and relevant ministers have a meeting planned at Phitsanulok Mansion on Friday for further discussions.

Thai pig farmers raise alarm about possible US imports
Thailand's pig farmers have warned the government against opening the pork market as a trade concession to secure tariff reductions from the United States, adding that even imports for animal feed production pose significant risks. With the US announcing a 36% import tariff on Thai goods effective from Aug 1, renewed negotiations are inevitable, said Sittiphan Thanakiatpinyo, president of the The Swine Raisers Association of Thailand. However, he stressed that any government concession allowing US pork, parts and offal imports would devastate domestic pig farmers and the entire supply chain. The association highlighted the vast production cost differential, warning that cheap US pork imports would collapse the domestic market and force local farmers into bankruptcy. Mr Sittiphan emphasised that pork should not serve as a negotiating tool in international trade discussions, given its high production costs, low profit margins and direct connection to national food security. The association raised concerns about potential disease outbreaks, particularly swine flu, which has never been detected in Thailand. Opening imports could compromise the country's internationally recognised livestock disease prevention standards. A critical health issue involves Beta-agonist growth promoters, permitted in US pork production but strictly banned in Thailand. Despite claims of safety, these substances can cause rapid heartbeat, hypertension, headaches and tremors in humans when consumed in large quantities. Scientific reports indicate these compounds accumulate more in organs than muscle tissue, creating risks even if used for animal feed production due to potential market leakage. The association called on the government to reconsider negotiation strategies, abandoning plans to open vulnerable agricultural markets and instead focusing on competitive industrial products to maintain grassroots economic stability, promote food safety and ensure long-term food security.
