Christian Horner's life since Red Bull sack and 'obvious' F1 return plan

Daily Mirror2 days ago
Christian Horner was unexpectedly sacked by Red Bull as their team principal in July but the legendary F1 boss has been tipped to return to the sport in the near future
Simon Lazenby has revealed how Christian Horner has been keeping himself busy since his shock dismissal from Red Bull. He went on to name Alpine and a potential new Formula One team, where Horner will look to own a share, as obvious landing spots for him if he makes a comeback to the sport.

Horner was suddenly axed as Red Bull F1's team principal in July after two decades at the helm. The 51-year-old was caught off guard by the decision, having managed the team since their formation in 2005, guiding them to eight drivers' titles and six constructors' crowns.

His exit, which came after the British Grand Prix, was followed by a tearful farewell at Red Bull's Milton Keynes headquarters. It followed months of disappointing on-track results and internal disputes at Red Bull.

Since Laurent Mekies took over his position, Horner has stayed away from the spotlight. But one individual who has managed to catch up with him in that time is Sky Sports F1 host Lazenby, who was recently asked by Nico Rosberg about what the ex-Red Bull chief said during their encounter.
Lazenby replied: 'A lot of the stuff he talked about was off the record. Now that the dust has settled a little bit and he's spending his weekends riding his horse and spending quality time with his family, which he needed to do, do we think that he will come back?'
With many across the sport convinced that Horner is eager to make an F1 comeback in some form, there has been speculation about which team he will lend his wealth of experience to. However, his return wouldn't be straightforward given his limited options and the unlikelihood of being handed the same power and control at another F1 outfit.
Lazenby added: 'Everybody's saying he's not going to come back without a share in the team, that's an obvious thing. He's got a great relationship with [Alpine team principal] Flavio Briatore. Would he come back there?
'He's not going to go to Ferrari. He's not going to want to uproot his entire family. He's also not potentially going to have a chunk of Ferrari given to him. So does he think about [starting] a twelfth team? Will he start his own team?

'We're absolutely going to see him again. I feel like this is just an enforced hiatus. He's going to come back with a point to prove.'
Rosberg agreed that Alpine would represent a logical long-term project, despite the bottom team-placed team only recently confirming Steve Nielsen's appointment as their managing director.
A move to McLaren or Mercedes seems out of the question, whilst Fred Vasseur has secured a new multi-year deal at Ferrari. As they gear up to become F1's 11th team in 2026, Cadillac have held discussions with Horner, though Graeme Lowdon only joined in December.

Lewis Hamilton hints at ‘background' issues at Ferrari in another deflated interview

Lewis Hamilton could barely muster any words after a Hungarian Grand Prix to forget on Sunday, though did hint at 'background' issues at Ferrari. The seven-time world champion, 40, is yet to register a podium for Ferrari after 14 races this season and finished outside the points in 12th at the Hungaroring. It was Hamilton's worst result in Budapest in 15 years and caps off a disappointing first-half of the season in Ferrari red, as F1 now takes a three-week summer break. After qualifying on Saturday, when teammate Charles Leclerc claimed pole position but Hamilton was knocked out in Q2, Hamilton labelled his display as 'useless' and said Ferrari should look for a new driver. Asked if he wanted to expand on that statement, a deflated Hamilton replied after Sunday's race: 'Not particularly. When you have a feeling, you have a feeling. 'There's a lot going on in the background, which is not great.' Questioned on whether he has lost his love for racing, Hamilton told Sky Sports F1: 'No, I still love racing.' Hamilton was involved in an incident with Max Verstappen, when the Red Bull driver passed him but the Ferrari car was forced off-track. Both drivers saw the stewards after the race, with Hamilton stating he 'did not remember' the incident. The stewards eventually insisted the incident required no further action. Lando Norris won the race in Budapest for McLaren, as his bold one-stop strategy paid off. Oscar Piastri finished second, but still has a lead of nine points in the world championship, while George Russell finished third. Leclerc ended up in fourth. Hamilton is sixth in the drivers' standings, a mammoth 175 points behind championship leader Oscar Piastri and 42 points off teammate Leclerc. F1 now takes its traditional summer break before the Dutch Grand Prix on 29-31 August.

Max Verstappen calls Lewis Hamilton 'scared' after Hungarian GP incident

Max Verstappen says Lewis Hamilton was 'scared' after the Formula 1 rivals nearly collided during the Hungarian Grand Prix. Lando Norris held off McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri in the closing stages of a tense race to claim victory at the Hungaroring on Sunday. The Brit has closed the gap to his championship rival to just nine points as F1 heads on its summer break, returning at the end of August with the Dutch Grand Prix. Further back, it was a race to forget for Verstappen who took the chequered flag in ninth place, embarrassingly finishing behind Liam Lawson in Red Bull's junior team. To make matters worse for the four-time champion, he was the subject of a post-race investigation for potentially forcing Hamilton off the track on lap 30. The Red Bull attempted a bold overtake on the Ferrari down the inside of turn 4, narrowly avoiding contact, with Hamilton seemingly taking avoiding action by running wide at the corner, which in turn allowed Verstappen to get past. Hamilton would go on to finish 12th, while the incident was noted by the stewards who, somewhat unusually, decided to settle the matter after the race. Verstappen wasn't impressed to discover the stewards were investigating, telling Viaplay: 'I'm actually pretty disappointed I have to go to the stewards after the race. Just analyse it in the race. More Trending 'I just set my nose next to him [Hamilton], he gets scared and goes off track.' Hamilton for his part didn't seemed fussed about the matter on what was a terrible weekend for the seven-time champion, saying: 'I don't really remember to be honest. 'I saw last minute he was quite close to my right wheel, so I tried to avoid a collision.' More to follow… For more stories like this, check our sport page. Thomas Partey set to join new club two days before appearing in court over rape charges

Thomas Partey is due to pen a two-year deal with Villarreal after seeing his Arsenal contract expire as the Ghanaian also prepares to appear in court after being hit with several charges Former Arsenal midfielder Thomas Partey is due to join Villarreal this summer after his contract at the Emirates expired, leaving him free to seek pastures new. The 32-year-old Ghanaian has undergone a medical and is expected to sign a two-year deal with the Spanish club, which will see him play with the Yellow Submarine until 2027. It will mark his return to La Liga having played there during his Atletico Madrid days. Partey was keen to remain in the Champions League and that was a major factor in him choosing Villarreal, who finished fifth in Spain last term. The midfielder had been linked with moves to clubs in Europe and the Middle East throughout the season. The Athletic reported that the ex-Atletico man was in talks over staying at the Emirates but an agreement could not be reached on the terms of a deal despite the two parties trying until late in the day. Partey joined the club from Atletico for £45million back in 2020 and has been part of their rise to title challengers under Mikel Arteta. All in all he made 167 appearances for Arsenal, scoring nine goals, including one in a north London derby win. Shortly after the Ghanaian's Arsenal exit was confirmed he was charged with five counts of rape and one count of sexual assault. He denies all charges. He had been the subject of an investigation that began in February 2022. He is due to appear at Westminster Magistrates Court on Tuesday August 5. Arteta was asked for his reaction to the news of Partey's charges and said: "The club was very clear in its statement. There are a lot of legal matters that are very complicated so I cannot comment on any of that. Quizzed further on whether he was confident the club has followed the right process he replied: "100%." Arsenal have made several additions in the middle of the pitch with Martin Zubimendi among their key signings. The Spanish midfielder joins from Real Sociedad after being on the club's radar 12 months ago and will assist the likes of Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard. Christian Norgaard has also joined from Brentford with the Dane adding more depth to the team's midfield options. Arteta has also captured more firepower in Viktor Gyokeres from Sporting Lisbon and Noni Madueke from Chelsea. Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
