Now, it's poised for a major transformation, as the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) has laid out a Rs 420 crore redevelopment project to turn Charbagh into a world-class transit hub that blends heritage with cutting-edge functionality.
A Vision for the future
The project encompassing both the Northern Railway and North Eastern Railway zones will accommodate a staggering 1.40 lakh passengers daily while ensuring seamless connectivity, sustainability, and passenger comfort. The station's redevelopment is a delicate balancing act—preserving its historical essence while introducing modern amenities to meet the demands of a rapidly growing city.
At the heart of the transformation are two massive concourses: a 120 metres x 115 metres structure for NR and a 75m x 30m concourse for NER, designed to handle peak-hour crowds of up to 10,000 passengers.

These concourses will be interconnected by multiple foot overbridges (FOBs), including Metro-integrated FOBs, ensuring effortless movement across platforms and city sides.
'The idea is seamless movement,' said a rail official. The western FOB will link directly to the Lucknow Metro's Charbagh station, connecting both NER station and NR concourses, with escalators and lifts for accessibility. The eastern FOB will tie Station Road and Kanpur Road directly to platform No.
1 and further.
Elevating the passenger experience
A sprawling ground plus six-floor building spanning 45,270 square metres at the rear will house airconditioned waiting areas, food courts, dormitories, and commercial spaces. New blocks on the east and west will enhance accessibility and aesthetics, while dedicated drop-off/pick-up zones and widened roads will ease traffic congestion. Parking facilities for 900 two-wheelers and 900 four-wheelers will cater to the station's bustling traffic.
Passenger amenities are at the core of the design. Retiring rooms, cloakrooms, medical facilities, CCTV surveillance, baggage scanners, and smart signage systems will elevate the travel experience. The NR zone, which currently has nine platforms, will get two more — all 11 platforms to be accessible via the elevated concourse. This concourse will double as a vibrant hub with waiting areas, shops, and other facilities for travellers.
Sustainability and innovation
Sustainability is woven into the project's core. Rainwater harvesting systems, stormwater management, and landscaped public spaces reflect a commitment to environmental stewardship. The use of pre-engineered buildings, modular construction, and building information modelling ensures precision and efficiency, minimizing waste and maximizing durability.
Progress amid challenges
The transformation is well underway, with over 84% of the rear station building structure complete.
Platform panel casting is finished, and external development is progressing. An integrated running room with 326 beds and a new workshop store are ready for handover. However, the journey hasn't been without hurdles. The rear entry project, initially slated for completion by Dec 2025, has been delayed to May 2026 due to challenges like the Kumbh Mela rush, the relocation of railway assets, and land availability issues.
A 56-day block is currently in place to develop the concourse over platforms 2 through 6.Once the rear entry is complete, railway operations will shift to the southern side, freeing up the northern front for Rail Land Development Authority to begin work on the station's iconic facade. Existing railway offices, rest houses, and utility structures are being relocated to make way for these new developments.
Honouring a legacy
Charbagh's historical significance is not lost in this transformation.
The redevelopment respects its 1926 design, celebrated for muffling train sounds legacy, blending timeless elements with modern aesthetics that reflect Lucknow's evolving identity as a vibrant metropolis.
A new chapter by 2026
As the project races toward its anticipated completion in the last quarter of 2026, Charbagh railway station is poised to emerge as a beacon of progress, a transit hub that honours its storied past while embracing the future.

New Delhi, Aug. 4: The Posts and Telegraphs Department is working on a rural dialling plan to benefit subscribers in small towns and villages. The plan is based on the traffic pattern obtaining in the rural areas. It will enable the subscribers in a district to have automatic dialling of calls between the towns and with the district headquarters. Sixty per cent of the calls in the rural areas have been found to be within a revenue district. Subscribers also put through more calls to the district headquarters rather than among themselves. Most of the calls are within a range of 50 kms. The rural dialling plan will provide quick communication in an economic way. Calls from places outside the district will be initially on a manual basis, but will become automatic in course of time. Several advantages are claimed for the plan from the pattern of traffic. The cost of handling a short distance trunk call is Rs. 3 on average, while the revenue earned remains around one rupee only. Hence it is more advantageous to provide STD service in a revenue district. Already exchanges of 100 or 50 lines are automatic whereas the trunk service is manual. Under the proposed scheme, there will be more customer satisfaction as 60 per cent to 70 per cent can dial themselves. The loss to the Department will also be reduced. The Telecommunication Research Centre (TRC) is fully equipped to meet the demand. It has already evolved a new technique in telephone exchanges or switching centres which will bring down the cost of the network.

Infopark Phase III: GCDA to pool 1,000 acres, to issue notification soon
Kochi: Greater Cochin Development Authority (GCDA) initiated procedures to publish the notification for land pooling for the much-awaited Phase III of Infopark GCDA is planning to pool nearly 1,000 acres to establish the new campus across 300 acres in Kizhakkambalam and Kunnathunadu villages of the district. The project will be the first land-pooling project in Kerala. Govt tasked GCDA with land pooling through an order last year. Following this, GCDA engaged in discussions with Infopark at various stages, conducted site inspections and began efforts to identify suitable land. However, GCDA faced technical hurdles as the identified lands were outside GCDA's jurisdiction. The authority approached govt, which subsequently issued an order last month assigning GCDA a special task for land pooling in the area. The first step for land pooling is issuing an initial notification by determining the suitable land. The area intended for pooling, along with details including survey numbers, will be published with the help of a boundary map. Subsequently, a meeting of landowners in the area will be convened to present the project details. If 75% of total landowners agree to pooling, GCDA will proceed with the project. If 75% of landowners do not consent, steps will be initiated to identify other suitable land, said GCDA authorities. A press note issued by GCDA on Monday said Phase III campus will feature six key components: carbon neutrality, self-sufficiency in water resources, a complete waste management system, road, rail and airport connectivity, an inclusive IT park and a maintenance system that doesn't disrupt the functioning of IT companies. Besides IT companies, there will be residential facilities, commercial establishments, sports and cultural facilities, recreational areas, hospitals and educational institutions, it said.

20 years on, GDA may file FIR against officials for 134 extra flats in society
Ghaziabad: GDA will take action against several current and former officials who allowed a private developer to construct and sell 134 extra flats beyond the sanctioned 400 units at Express Garden society in Indirapuram's Vaibhav Khand in 2005. A GDA panel, set up on the direction of the Allahabad High Court, is set to submit its report to the Authority's additional secretary later this week. The high court is due to hear the matter in Sept. Officials, privy to the content of the committee's findings, said the panel has recommended "FIR be filed against the architect, developer and the then GDA officials under whose watch the additional units were constructed".
