
The Coca-Cola flop you've probably never heard of! Soda giant launched another drink in 1993 with unusual message - but it didn't last long
Coca-Cola is so deeply embedded in human consciousness that it is often cited as the second-most recognised words in the world - just after the universally understood 'OK.'
According to some studies and brand historians, the name Coca-Cola is understood by 94 per cent of the world's population.
However, in a bold Noughties experiment, the soda giant tried to recreate its success and launched OK Soda in a bid to own both of the world's most recognised terms - but it didn't go to plan.
Launched in 1993, OK Soda wasn't your typical sugary drink as Coca-Cola crafted it with one target in mind, the Gen X teen (or those people born between the late 1960s and the early '80s)
Generation X were often described as independent, self-reliant, skeptical and disillusioned with the status quo, so Coca-Cola wanted to try something new to appeal to their tastes.
The idea was to be anti-marketing to an audience that hated being marketed to. Unsurprisingly, however, the audience saw right through what was essentially still advertising and the brand never took off.
OK Soda's cans were designed to look deliberately strange; they came in muted grayscale tones and featured drawings by legendary alt cartoonists Charles Burns and Daniel Clowes.
Clowes later said he used cult leader and serial killer Charles Manson's face as a model for one of his designs.
The grey cans featured cryptic, existential slogans like 'Everything is going to be OK' and 'Don't be fooled into thinking there has to be a reason for everything'.
Even the hotline printed on the cans (1-800-I-FEEL-OK) delivered absurd recorded messages rather than actual customer service.
OK Soda's flavor was equally underwhelming as it was described as 'slightly spicy' and likened to a combination of orange soda and flat Coca-Cola.
When they were looking to introduce a new beverage, Coca-Cola's special projects manager Brian Lanahan told Time Magazine that they chose the name 'OK' because it didn't sensationalise the product.
It was supposed to be the marketing world's greatest reverse psychology triumph, but it was a flop.
OK Soda never made it past the test markets, after launching in about a dozen US cities, and sales were lukewarm at best.
By 1995, two years after its debut, OK Soda was quietly pulled from shelves and officially discontinued.

The very first print advertisement for Coca-Cola was launched in the United States back in 1905,with actress Hilda Clark sipping the fizzy black drink from a tea cup.
The advertisement, which resembled a postage stamp of sorts with its floral design and portrait style, marketed the now global soft drink for just five cents.
It is in stark contrast to the bold and colourful footage used to market the soft drink's famous curved bottle on television, social media and in magazines in 2015 where a 600ml bottle of drink can set consumers back a minimum of $3.50.
Coca-Cola advertising was launched in Australia in 1943 and among one of the first marketing posters was artist Haddon Sundblom's 'Yes Girl' pin-up, which remains a hallmark in design today.
The poster features a smiling woman sitting down in her vintage swimwear as a man passes her a bottle of Coca-Cola.
The changing face of the soft drink advertising sheds light on just how much social attitudes, trends and fashion have shifted in the past eight decades.
Coca-Cola targeted women in the 1950s with slogans like 'refresh yourself while shopping' and 'take some home for the family'.
They were pictured lazing on the beach, typing on typewriters and pushing shopping trolleys in their 1950s-style dresses while they sipped from the soft drink bottles.

Shocking footage captures an amusement park ride stopped in mid-air, leaving riders dangling high above the ground. The Sol Spin ride at Knott's Berry Farm in Buena Park, California, suddenly malfunctioned Saturday afternoon as it was rotating 360 degrees. Video from the Citizen App showed about 20 riders stuck in mid-air, with many screaming, some swinging their legs, and others leaning sideways on one of the ride's six arms. The ride was stopped for approximately five minutes,' Knott's Berry Farm said in a statement to ABC7. The ride then reopened after 'a full safety inspection,' the statement continued. The Independent has reached out to the amusement park for more information. 'This thrilling ride is one for the brave,' Knott's Farm says of Sol Spin. It rotates riders in three directions simultaneously, according to the park's website. 'Sol Spin sends guests on a thrilling adventure over six stories high as they rotate in all directions on one of six spinning arms. Each arm rotates 360-degrees independent of one another providing a different experience every ride,' the website states. Social media users replied to videos of the harrowing incident, calling it a 'nightmare.' One X user remarked: 'Oh. Hell. No. One of my worst fears unlocked.' 'What a nightmare!' another said. Another recalled a similar incident last year, put it succinctly: 'Again.' Last November, the same ride left 22 people suspended in the air for two hours due to 'technical difficulties,' a spokesperson for the amusement park said at the time. Some riders left the thrill ride in wheelchairs while two female guests were taken to the hospital for further evaluation "out of an abundance of caution,' the spokesperson said in November. The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health then inspected the ride, KTLA reported.

Beach city scraps 10,000 new homes and plans F1-style track instead that locals rage is 'dumb' and 'desperate'
Locals in a popular New Jersey beach city are enraged after it ditched plans to build 10,000 new homes for a 'dumb' and 'desperate' $3.4 billion F1-style racetrack. Atlantic City government officials have moved forward with the redevelopment of Bader Field, a shuttered airport about an hour outside of Philadelphia, after plans for the new racetrack were officially approved on July 16. The idea to take over the abandoned city-owned airport, which shut down in 2006, first started in 2022 when Bart Blatstein, the CEO of Tower Investments, Inc. and owner of Showboat Atlantic City, said his company and Atlantic City would collaborate to create a massive residential community. The proposed $3 billion development, dubbed 'Casa Mar,' was set to be built on 140 acres with 10,000 residential units, 20 acres of trails, amenities and parks and 400,000 square-feet of retail and office space - but that plan has since been wiped. Instead, a 2.5-mile racetrack, headed by real estate development company Deem Enterprises, will take its place. The massive raceway, said to be a 'game changer' by Atlantic City Mayor Marty Small Sr., is expected to take six to nine years to complete. It will be surrounded by retail businesses and condominiums in the community that is home to beaches, a bustling boardwalk and casinos. 'We're more confident than ever that we have the funds, Small Sr., an Atlantic City native who has been in office since 2019, told NJ Advance Media. '[DEEM] has been vetted, and just getting a $3.4-plus billion project on the ratable base is a complete game changer.' While the mayor, who was embroiled in a child abuse scandal involving his wife and daughter last year, and other government officials are thrilled about the new plan, Atlantic City locals are not happy with it. 'Atlantic City leadership is so desperate that they will support any development offer no matter how stupid it is,' a Facebook user wrote. Another said: 'What a joke! Want to really do something with the land? Dig canals and sell off lots and watch the ratepayers flood in!' 'Building that into a racetrack has to be the dumbest idea in the world,' someone else posted. A resident stressed that the heavily populated and touristy area is already filled with loud noises, so a racetrack would not be ideal. 'If people are bothered by the noise from beach concerts, the noise from the screaming F1 race cars would be unbearable!,' they said. While many are not happy with the development, others appear to be excited for the new track. 'Hell yes,' one simply wrote. Somebody else said: 'Do it!' Another said: 'Excellent' alongside several thumbs up and heart emojis. Meanwhile, a majority of people are not convinced the racetrack will ever be completed. 'They've been talking about it for years... highly doubt it'll ever happen,' wrote a user. 'This is all BS. Every few years this story comes out,' someone else shared. Another posted: 'I'm gonna go ahead and predict this will never happen.' Blatstein told the outlet three years ago that he saw room for growth in the beach city after realizing that other Garden State beach towns have booming populations compared to Atlantic City. 'So what really is needed here is a new plan, a new way of living, a new opportunity for people to come to Atlantic City,' Blatstein said. DEEM Enterprises, a Los Angeles and Atlantic City-based company, first announced the proposal in February of that year. The company has a tentative deal with the city to sell the vacant airfield for $100 million in exchange the real estate developer would donate $15 million for a community center. 'We don't have a recreation center of our town,' Small Sr. explained. 'We use the schools and different things like that.'
