Kemar Roofe fires Rangers regret warning over Cyriel Dessers as he pinpoints critical moment in Ibrox career
The Nigeria international splits opinion among the Ibrox legions and his old team-mate has given the lowdown
Kemar Roofe fears Rangers could live to regret selling Cyriel Dessers.
The current Ibrox number nine is on the verge of a move to Greek outfit AEK Athens for around £4 million.
Rangers look set to get their money back on the 30-year-old who has bagged 51 goals in two seasons at Gers.
If Dessers goes, new gaffer Russell Martin will be charged with finding a replacement up front and has already been linked with moves for Israeli ace Dor Turgeman and Croatian hit-man Matija Frigan.
However, former Rangers striker Roofe - who played alongside Dessers at Ibrox - believes the Nigerian international will be a big loss.
He insists his old club must find a player who can replicate Dessers' goal return on the pitch - as well as his character and resilience off it.
In an exclusive interview with Record Sport, Roofe said: 'I rated Cyriel highly at Rangers. First and foremost, he's a good human being.
'A really good guy and brilliant for the squad. He has lots of respect for everyone.
'Cyriel worked really hard to get his goals and I think some players end up with unfair opinions on them.
'He was definitely one of them at Rangers. The thing about Cyriel is that when he was criticised - it didn't affect him.
'He just kept going and that's massive as a player. Everyone will get criticised at some point but it's how you handle it.
'Cyriel handed it tremendously. He's got the character and personality to be a Rangers player.
'Could they regret selling him if he goes? Yeah, because goals are goals - and you have to replace them.
'It depends who Rangers bring in his place. If they get someone who can score more than Cyriel it will be the right decision.
'But if they don't, it'll be the wrong decision. We'll find out at the end of this season.'
Roofe spent a year with Dessers at Ibrox under ex-boss Michael Beale before leaving last summer.
The 32-year-old - who was the club's top scorer in Rangers' 2021 title win and reached the Europa League Final in 2022 - was impressed by his strike partner's attitude at Ibrox.
Because Roofe says some players, unlike Dessers, couldn't handle the expectations at such a big club.
He said: 'At Rangers, it all comes down to whether players - or staff - can handle the pressure there. If you can't handle it and you crumble, you get found out by the fans.
'And as soon as they see it, you're finished. It takes a special kind of character to play for Rangers under that pressure.
'From my experience at Rangers, Leeds, Anderlecht - massive clubs where the pressure is huge - it's all about winning. Just win, win, win, that's all that matters.
'Anything less is no good. Being able to deal with that demand every day is tough. But if you can't do it, the fans will see it and eventually it affects results.
'I saw it with players at Rangers, many times. Players who couldn't handle it. But not everyone is built the same. There are strengths and weaknesses in every team.'
In Roofe's last season at Ibrox, he played alongside Dessers in a controversial Old Firm derby defeat in September 2023.
Dessers dispossessed Celtic defender Gustaf Lagerbielke and set up Roofe to score - only for it to be chalked off for a foul by the Nigerian.
Rangers lost the game 1-0 to a Kyogo Furuhashi strike and then-gaffer Michael Beale was sacked later that season.
But Roofe says the Dessers decision was harsh - and a pivotal moment for Beale and the club.
He said: 'What I remember is that it should have been a goal when Cyriel played me in - and we should have won that game.
'It was a huge moment for Michael. If that goal had stood and we'd have beaten Celtic, things could have been a lot different for him at the club."

Chelsea battling Premier League rivals for Joao Pedro after bid rejected
Joao Pedro has thrived for Brighton in the Premier League since joining from Watford but the Seagulls face a tall order to keep hold of the Brazilian international Chelsea are battling it out with Newcastle to sign Brighton striker Joao Pedro. Newcastle have already had a £50m-plus bid turned down by Brighton who will not allow the Brazil international to go on the cheap. Chelsea are also keen and have held discussions over signing the 23-year-old who would add options and versatility to their forward line. That would raise serious question marks over the futures of Christopher Nkunku who has been heavily linked with Manchester United and also Nicolas Jackson. Jackson was sent off in the Club World Cup which means he has been serving a ban in two separate competitions after missing the end of the Premier League season after getting a red card. Brighton have rejected bids from two separate Premier League clubs with Liverpool and Arsenal also having been linked with the versatile forward who can play through the middle and wide. Chelsea have held discussions but are now pushing to get a deal done and it remains to be seen whether they can agree a deal. Chelsea have been very active in this window as they are still looking to get a deal done for Borussia Dortmund 's Jamie Gittens. Brighton signed Pedro from Watford in a deal worth around £30m in the summer of 2023 and will want to get a big profit. Pedro, who has scored 30 goals in 70 Albion appearances, is a long-term target of Newcastle as who were also keen in 2022. But now Newcastle face a fight on their hands with Chelsea and other Premier League clubs keen on the Brazilian. Pedro was banished from Fabian Hurzeler's squad for the final two Premier League matches of the season following an alleged training ground spat with Dutch defender Jan Paul van Hecke. Now his future could be elsewhere if anyone can meet Brighton's price. Earlier this month, Brighton boss Hurzeler suggested he expects to have Joao Pedro and Kaoru Mitoma back for pre-season training. Mitoma was the subject of interest from the Saudi Pro League last season but ended up staying put. "For sure. I'm really looking forward for both of them," the boss tols Sky Sports. "They're great players and they helped us a lot last season. They're expected to be back next week." Brighton have already spent big this summer, with Greek striker Charalampos Kostoulas joining from Olympiacos for around £30m. Tommy Watson and Diego Coppola have also completed moves, from Sunderland and Verona respectively. "I think they all have great potential. We keep doing our way, signing young players with big potential and trying to develop them," Hurzeler added. "That's what we'll try to do with these new signings and I'm sure they will make us better." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content. Rangers owners 49ers get their chequebooks out for £22m bill as mega cost of World Cup hosting duties revealed
The 49ers Enterprises investment group have taken control of Rangers - but the American football giants will also have to fork out for the 2026 World Cup Rangers fans are dreaming of a glorious future under the banner of the 49ers Enterprises investment group – but the Ibrox club aren't all they're spending their money on. New Ibrox chairman Andrew Cavenagh has pledged to immediately inject £20million into the football department to help Russell Martin shape his squad ahead of the new season. Lyall Cameron has joined Gers from Dundee while full back Max Aarons has completed a loan switch from Bournemouth. And more are expected to follow with Leicester City defender Conor Coady in talks over a move north of the border while the likes of Dor Turgeman and Matija Frigan have been heavily linked. After years of turmoil, the Light Blues now look to be in good hands on the financial side of things, with health tycoon Cavenagh and vice chairman Paraag Marathe now working alongside CEO Patrick Stewart. 49ers Enterprises - who are the investment arm of the famed American Football (NFL) team San Francisco 49ers - also own Leeds United, and are set to splash the cash even further this summer to ensure the Yorkshire team enjoy a successful season back in the Premier League. But reports across the pond also now claim that 49ers chiefs could spent up to $30million (£21.9million) to host six matches at next year's FIFA World Cup. The 49ers will open their doors for six matches at the Levi's Stadium in Santa, Clara, California as the biggest show in town hits North America. Yardbarker state that hosting those games will cost the city $50million (£36.4million) and that 49ers will not be able to use taxpayer money to pay the bill. They add that in turn, FIFA will contribute $13million (£9.4million) of the overall figure and with the state of California coughing up $7- 8.5 million (£5-6million), the 49ers will have to front the rest of the bill, a total of around $30m (£22m). On top of that, the mega franchise are also in the midst of renovating Levi's Stadium ahead of the finals at reported cost of $200 million (£145.7million). As well as the World Cup, the Calafornia team will also host the Superbowl on February 8, 2026. It is the first time the Levi's Stadium has hosted the world famous event since 2015 and only the third time the sporting landmark has ever been held in the San Francisco Bay Area. My last five years at Rangers with Walter Smith were more satisfying than nine in a row, says Sir David Murray
Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) SIR DAVID MURRAY insists his final five years at Ibrox were even MORE satisfying than capturing the coveted Nine in a Row. The former Rangers owner was in charge for 23 years as the club reached a European final and came within 90 minutes of the first-ever Champions League final. But Sir David — speaking exclusively to SunSport — rates Smith's return in early 2007 and the next five years as the highlight. He said: 'Taking all factors into consideration, I think the last five years were remarkable. 'Previously, we had money to spend but it was tight when Walter came back. 'Paul Le Guen hadn't worked out. 'When Walter came back, he wanted to sign David Weir and Christian Dailly. It was unbelievable but he knew how to do it. 'Having Alistair McCoist and Kenny McDowall with him, they were a unit full of motivation. 'We won eight trophies in five years. When I left, it was on the brink of Three in a Row.' Murray appointed just four men as manager over 23 years — Smith (twice), Le Guen, Dick Advocaat and Alex McLeish. And he recalls with great fondness the run to the 2008 UEFA Cup final in Manchester — despite ultimately falling to Advocaat's Zenit St Petersburg. Sir Sean Connery's secret £1 MILLION investment in Rangers revealed He added: 'If you look at the UEFA Cup run in 2008, the penalty shoot-out against Fiorentina stands out. 'Christian Vieri, who cost millions, missed and Nacho Novo — a free from Dundee — slotted it away. 'What we had at that time was a tightness and a bond. 'People on the outside thought they knew things but there was no leakage. 'We beat Werder Bremen with a great save from Allan McGregor and you remember it all. 'We ran out of steam in the final after Dick went and bought a Russian player for millions! Football's scoop of the century By Roger Hannah IT'S The Sun Wot Broke It. But Sir David Murray didn't mind that his historic swoop for Maurice Johnston was first revealed on the front page of this newspaper in 1989. He was just relieved he'd managed to help Graeme Souness pull off a transfer swoop which rocked Scottish football. Even now, 36 years on, landing the Scotland striker from Celtic's grasp — and making him the first high- profile Catholic to play for Gers — is regarded as the most audacious swoop of all time. And Murray recalls: 'All the talk was of Johnston joining Celtic. But Graeme came to me and said, 'Apparently he's not signed, the paperwork's not done, we can get him'. 'I asked for a day to think about it, phoned him and said, 'Yes, I think we should do it for numerous reasons — for football reasons and to remove an area where we can be criticised for not signing Catholic players. And why not make it the best one, who can come in and contribute?' 'Even though at that time Mark Hateley and Ally McCoist were the strikers and had an excellent partnership. 'Finally, just 24 hours before we were due to unveil the player, we took a call from a young journalist at The Sun in Scotland ahead of a story being published. 'On July 10, 1989, The Sun ran half of its front page with the simple headline MO JOINS GERS. 'It certainly didn't spoil the unveiling. If anything, it ramped up the tension!' Johnston, who had played with Celts before a spell at Nantes in France, was pictured with Hoops boss Billy McNeill in 1989 but hadn't signed his contract to return. Gers boss Souness, who had played with Johnston for Scotland, realised the move hadn't been concluded and kickstarted the monumental move. 'That was an amazing achievement considering where we'd been 18 months before.' In his new autobiography, Murray details his relationship with all four men he appointed — and close pal Graeme Souness, who he inherited as boss when he bought the club in 1988. - Mettle: Tragedy, Courage & Titles by Sir David Murray, is on sale Thursday July 3 from Amazon and all good bookshops.
