Tryson Quek from Side Door crowned World Class Singapore 2025 champion
After months of fierce competition, Singapore has crowned its new World Class Bartender of the Year. At last night's finale held at Baia, Tryson Quek, the affable chef-turned-bartender and owner of Side Door, emerged as the winner of one of the country's most prestigious cocktail competitions.
He beat out a strong field of finalists: Marco Maiorano (КОМА), Zana Möhlmann (Manhattan), Kelvin Saquilayan (Republic Bar), Ooi Foo Giap (Last Word), and Sam Pang (Night Hawk), who each brought their own distinct style and skill to the competition.
This year's final unfolded in two parts, designed to push the boundaries of innovation, speed and bartending finesse. First up was the Drink to the Future challenge, which asked contestants to imagine what the world of cocktails might look like in the decades to come. Their creations had to incorporate either Johnnie Walker Blue Label, Don Julio 1942, or Zacapa XO, and make use of technology.
What we saw was a forward-looking display of imagination: plants turned into music to suggest a future where we might converse with our food, magnetic stirrers and ultrasonic infusers aimed at improving bar efficiency, and thoughtful ingredients like hydroponically grown tomatoes and carbon-capturing seaweed that point towards a more sustainable approach to drinking.
Next came The Showdown, a speed challenge that tested both composure and technical skill. Finalists had five minutes to shake, stir and present five elevated classic cocktails: a highball with Johnnie Walker Blue Label, a Paloma with Don Julio 1942, an Old Fashioned with Zacapa XO, a Manhattan using Singleton 15 Year Old, and a Martini with Tanqueray No. Ten. They were free to interpret the drinks, as long as the core of each cocktail remained intact. It was a tight, high-energy round where each finalist had to work with precision and pace while demonstrating showmanship and brand knowledge.
The judging panel comprised Ervin Trykowski, Diageo's global brand ambassador for New Age Whisky; Pedison Kao, Taiwan's World Class Bartender of the Year and global third-place winner; Adam Bursik, director of beverage at Shangri-La Singapore; and Nicole-Marie Ng, Time Out's regional content director for APAC. Together, we assessed a strong showing of ingenuity, technical precision and excellent drinks.
In the end, it was Tryson's blend of bold flavours, charming confidence and relentless creativity that earned him the top spot. While he hasn't been behind the bar for long, he used his background as a chef to his advantage. His win also marks a full-circle moment for Singapore's cocktail scene. The last time World Class was held in Singapore was in 2019, when Bannie Kang, Tryson's wife, took home both the national and global titles. Now, five years on, she passes the baton to her husband to represent Singapore at the World Class Global Finals in Toronto this September.

Did Hot Girls win the New York mayoral race for Zohran Mamdani?
Days before the New York mayoral hopeful Zohran Mamdani claimed victory in the Democratic primaries, Cait Camelia and Kaif Gilani walked the length of Manhattan with him during one of his final campaign appearances. 'We jumped in [on the walk] around Washington Square Park and watched these young men come up to him, dab him up, and say, 'Yo, you're so cool. Thank you so much for what you're doing',' said Camelia, 25. 'It's something they've been missing for a long time, someone who can introduce them to progressive ideas and pull them away from that right-wing manosphere.' Camelia and Gilani are the creatives behind 'Hot Girls 4 Zohran', a collective of young women and men who support Mamdani, 33, and make videos addressing the issues their generation faces, many of which are at the heart of the socialist's campaign. Gilani, 28, said being 'hot' had nothing to do with looks — but a desire to engage with progressive politics.

Sean 'Diddy' Combs' defense to make closing argument in sex trafficking trial
June 27 (Reuters) - Sean 'Diddy' Combs' defense lawyers are set to ask jurors on Friday to clear the hip-hop mogul of sex trafficking and other criminal charges, as his closely watched trial in Manhattan comes to a close. Combs, a former billionaire known for elevating hip-hop in American culture, has pleaded not guilty to racketeering conspiracy and two counts each of sex trafficking and transportation to engage in prostitution. If convicted on all counts, the Bad Boy Records founder faces a minimum 15-year prison term and could be sentenced to life behind bars. During the first day of closing arguments on Thursday, a U.S. prosecutor told jurors Combs used "violence and fear" to lead a criminal enterprise that helped him subject two of his former girlfriends to sex trafficking, "The defendant used power, violence and fear to get what he wanted," prosecutor Christy Slavik told jurors in her address. "He thought that his fame, wealth and power put him above the law." Combs' defense lawyers acknowledge that Combs was occasionally violent in domestic relationships, but have argued that his conduct did not amount to sex trafficking because the sex acts described by prosecutors were consensual. Over more than six weeks of testimony in Manhattan federal court, jurors heard two of Combs' former girlfriends testify that they took part in days-long, drug-fueled sex parties sometimes called "Freak Offs" with male sex workers while Combs watched, masturbated, and occasionally filmed. Combs did not testify. The jury saw hotel surveillance footage of Combs beating one of the women in a hallway, and heard Combs' employees describe setting up hotel rooms and buying drugs for the performances. Jurors are expected to start deliberations either late on Friday or on Monday. To convict Combs, they must vote unanimously.

Cringeworthy moment NFL star dodges handsy fan as she makes inappropriate move in public
Cincinnati Bengals star Ja'Marr Chase was the subject of a cringeworthy moment over the weekend in New York City as he slid away from a woman's hug while leaving a nightclub. In the early hours of Sunday morning, Chase walked out of Manhattan hotspot Zero Bond to much fanfare. The wide receiver tried to find his car, a black SUV, with plenty parked along the street. The unidentified woman was standing in between Chase and his ride away from the club in a skin-tight outfit, feet from where the wide receiver had just dapped up another person. The woman goes to hug Chase and gets her right arm around him, while he does not make contact with her and keeps walking without stopping, per TMZ. Chase then finds his car and gets in on the side of the street where people are not recording with their phones, as two other females get in before the drive away. Back on the street in Manhattan's NoHo neighborhood outside Zero Bond, the woman stares back at Chase upset that he did not show her affection in return with a mean look on her face. The woman responded on TikTok to her attempted hug of Chase, saying the pair do have a history together. 'Dang, I can't hug a old friend in NYC,' the woman captioned the video. By the comments on the video, at least one person is not buying that they are just friends. 'Sista the face you made now you know he's not just a friend,' one TikTok commenter said. 'Bro the way she made that face and walked off was like a scene out of a rom-com,' another person stated. Chase has plenty of attention on him these days as one of the elite wideouts in football, who recently got paid to cement his top-tier status. This offseason, Chase signed a 4-year, $161million contract with $112million guaranteed, making him the highest-paid non-quarterback in the NFL by annual salary. The Bengals have now locked in their offensive core for years to come alongside fellow wide receiver Tee Higgins and quarterback Joe Burrow.
