‘Do other women have this problem?' And Just Like That star's sex scene confession

News.com.au5 days ago
And Just Like That star Sarita Choudhury had addressed what it's like shooting awkward sex scenes – and the reason she is 'almost embarrassed' by them.
'I'm like, how do they know that? You think it's personal to you,' the British-Indian actor said. '[You think] do other women have this problem? A lot that happens to us in life, you might tell your one friend, you're not talking to everyone about it.
'Usually in any of the bed scenes, I find the most comedy.'
The 58-year-old plays Seema Patel on AJLT, which is currently airing its third season. Seema is a leopard-print wearing and Birkin bag toting real estate agent working in Manhattan, and a close friend of Carrie Bradshaw's (Sarah Jessica Parker), filling the kind of sexually liberated role famously and formerly filled by Samantha Jones (Kim Cattrall).
An accomplished actor, Choudhury made her Hollywood debut opposite Denzel Washington in Mira Nair's 1991 drama Mississippi Masala, and had a starring role in hit TV series Homeland, among other projects.
Asked about the importance of cultural representation in Hollywood, Choudhury remarks: 'It is so important. As an actor, I look for [the] character. And then because I have brown skin, and I'm Indian, that's going to come in naturally as opposed to the writers informing me how to do that'.
'With And Just Like That, one of the first things I saw was – oh, she smokes, she walks, she says it. I was like, this is exciting. This is not a stereotype.'
Sitting down with Stellar from New York, Choudhury says she takes inspiration from Seema's self-confidence, which she muses was likely built from 'maybe not fitting in'.
'Often what looks like confidence comes from, you know, maybe not fitting in,' she said.
'I think you develop your strength, because you have no choice. I think Seema comes from that kind of root.
'I'm of colour, and it doesn't matter what school I went to, I was always the different one. 'You find tricks and you are also like, f-off to anyone who doesn't get it, as you go home and cry. Now, she's like whatever.'
While Fendi and Dior are staples of Choudhury's on-screen wardrobe, her personal style is less like Seema's in real life.
'I like things to look normal within the glamour,' she said. 'When people tell you, no, no, no, you've got to do this! People actually want your original truth.
'Yes, it has to be packaged a bit at the beginning. In a moment of a scene, you can just stare at someone in a certain way, no one can control that. It's actually more work to be yourself but it's worth it.'
The latest season of And Just Like That – the buzzy reboot of groundbreaking series, Sex and the City – has been widely criticised, including this week for a bizarre inconsistency surrounding the death of Lisa Todd Wexley's father twice. It led New York magazine's influential Vulture blog to ask: 'Could the loony bin known as the AJLT writers' room have made such a big continuity error?'
In his popular Substack, writer Evan Ross Katz analysed what he called 'The Curious Case of LTW's Father's Multiple Deaths'.
While not commenting on the criticisms, Choudhury said she had felt more embedded into the cast – and role, while shooting the third season.
'I feel so much more settled and also, more alive. Now, I know how to wear high heels well, I know how to open all my purses quickly.
'I enjoy her pace, I know how to study for it. It's less uncertain and scary and it allows me to take in everyone,' she said, referring to her co-stars including Parker, Cynthia Nixon and Kristin Davis.
'By season three now, it's completely at ease. I don't think twice about running into any of their dressing rooms to ask them advice or a question.
'If we're lucky to be in a location ... there are crowds. We can't even hang out! We can't go to the next restaurant and just sit outside. That's not possible.
'Sometimes, we visit each other at our houses, where there is certain privacy.
'My most fun these days is when we're in the makeup room together and we gossip. Because we know each other more, it's a shorthand.'
It's a contrast to the reality Choudhury faced in the show's first season, when she admits she 'was a little terrified, let's be honest'.
'It was exciting to get the news that I was going to do this and at the same time, how was I going to do this?
'I knew this show was under the world's eye – like, people have a lot of love towards the history of the show. And their history with the show. It was scary.
'By the time season one finished, I started to think, oh, this could be fun! Season two you don't know if you can repeat what you did in season one.
'By season three, I realised it's not me playing a character, it's these friends pulling me in. You start to earn that over the seasons. I feel so comfortable with the ladies.'
New episodes of And Just Like That … are out every Friday in Australia on Max. The latest issue of Stellar is out on Sunday, inside The Sunday Telegraph (NSW), Sunday Herald Sun (Victoria), The Sunday Mail (Queensland) and Sunday Mail (SA).

‘Are you for real?': Internet up in arms over Gwyneth Paltrow's strange kitchen act

Gwyneth Paltrow is back at it, shocking the internet once more. This time it's not about vagina-scented candles, jade eggs, or forgetting she was in Spider-Man. She's being dragged for her latest 'unacceptable' kitchen move. The Goop queen recently posted a video to Instagram showing off a lavish lobster breakfast she cooked for husband Brad Falchuk. But while she was living her best bougie chef life, fans zeroed in on one particularly eyebrow-raising move. In the clip, the 52-year-old is seen cracking eggs into a strainer and then, with shocking casualness, appears to let the egg whites just spill onto the floor before carrying on like nothing happened. In the caption, she called it a 'paleo lobster benedict for a Hamptons-inspired #boyfriendbreakfast this morning,' with Phoenix's 'Girlfriend' blasting in the background. Some followers were impressed that she even cooks at all. 'Even though you're a multi-millionaire celeb, you still do your own foraging and cooking, that's so great,'ï¸ one fan gushed. 'I love the special breakfasts you make. My favourite meal of the day!!' another chimed in. But plenty were completely weirded out by the eggwhite floor dump. 'Did I just see Gwyneth empty the remnants of the egg whites onto the floor? Tell me I didn't just see that,' one asked. 'Totally pour my egg whites on the floor too,' someone snarked. Another questioned: 'Awesome, but did you just throw the leftover egg white on the floor?' Some theorised she probably had help at the ready. 'She may have a servant on standby for clean-up,' one wrote. Others tried to give her the benefit of the doubt. 'I saw it too, maybe there's a small bin underneath,' someone guessed. Even with the hidden bin, the wastage had people infuriated. One comment read: 'Discarding egg whites in the waste bin. Every chef rolling their eyes. Are you for real??' Gwyneth is no stranger to going viral and baffling the world. From the infamous $75 'This Smells Like My Vagina' candle launches to completely forgetting she'd been in Spider-Man: Homecoming during an interview with Jon Favreau, sparking confusion is just another day for the A-lister. She met the recipient of the viral breakfast, her husband Brad Falchuk, on the set of Glee in 2010. They kept things under wraps for years before tying the knot in 2018. Brad, behind hits like Glee and American Horror Story, doesn't share any kids with Gwyneth. But Brad is a stepdad to Apple and Moses, her kids with Chris Martin. And, she's stepmum to his kids Isabella and Brody from his previous marriage Suzanne Bukinik. Egg-white gate isn't her first headline-grabbing kitchen post lately. Last month, she posted herself cooking topless at the stove, with her daughter Apple cheekily calling her out in the comments. 'Did I steal your shirt by accident or …' She also filmed herself tearing up over onions, while confessing what makes her cry. The star also recently admitted that after years of strict paleo eating, she's had enough. She's getting back on carbs. 'I'm getting back into eating sourdough bread, cheese — there, I said it — [and] a little pasta,' she said.

Inside the family ‘drama' that kept Kendall and Kylie Jenner away from half-brother Brody's wedding

There's reportedly 'bad blood' in the Jenner clan that led to Kendall and Kylie Jenner not attending their half-brother Brody Jenner's wedding to Tia Blanco. Tense relations between Brody's mum, Linda Thompson, and Kendall and Kylie's mum, Kris Jenner, has spilt over to their children, the US Sun reported Tuesday. Although Kendall and Kylie could easily have made arrangements to attend Brody's Malibu wedding at Thompson's home over the weekend, the sisters chose not to prioritise it, a source told the outlet. Linda and Kris have not gotten along 'in decades,' leading Brody to reportedly dislike the Kardashian mumager. 'He's never gotten over it, and so when the siblings were trying to build relationships, Brody would often fall back into this narrative of blaming Kris for everything,' the insider continued. While Kendall has reportedly made an effort to get along with her dad Caitlyn Jenner's side of the family, the source said Kylie has firmly aligned herself with the Kardashian side. 'Kylie has admitted to friends she just feels like a stranger in the Jenner family unit,' the source explained. 'She has nothing in common with them. She feels her place is as part of the Kardashians.' Reps for Kylie, Kendall and Brody did not immediately respond to Page Six's requests for comment. TMZ reported on Monday that Kendall and Kylie didn't attend the wedding because they thought their presence would take the spotlight away from Brody and Blanco. 'Brody and his half sisters have nothing but love for each other,' a source told the outlet. Caitlyn did attend the intimate wedding, which had around 60 to 70 guests, per TMZ. The wedding took place just two weeks after the Olympic gold medallist lost her longtime friend and manager, Sophia Hutchins, in a tragic ATV accident. Caitlyn, 75, shares Brody, 41, and older son Brandon Jenner, 44, with Thompson — her second ex-wife. Caitlyn also shares son Burt Jenner, 46, and daughter Cassandra Marino, 45, with her first wife, Chrystie Scott; and Kendall, 29, and Kylie, 27, with her third ex-wife, Kris.

Tim Tszyu primed to emulate his father Kostya's 2001 victory over Zab Judah at MGM Grand ballroom in Las Vegas

It is one of the most iconic images in Australian boxing history that has Tim Tszyu primed to shock the boxing world in his quest to conquer America. Tszyu will look to break Australian boxing's Las Vegas curse when he takes on Sebastian Fundora in their world-title match on Sunday – at the very scene of his father Kostya's greatest knockout. Nearly a quarter of a century has passed since Tszyu Sr clobbered Zad Judah in the second round with a thunderous right hand to become the undisputed super lightweight champion of the world in November 2001. The most lethal and celebrated punch of Kostya's career was unleashed at MGM's Grand Garden Arena, the 17,000-capacity venue which has hosted some of the biggest fights in boxing history. The bouts have included Mike Tyson's first fight with Evander Holyfield, Oscar De La Hoya's blockbusters against Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao, Deontay Wilder's heavyweight showdown with Tyson Fury and, of course, the Tszyu-Judah megafight. Now Tim Tszyu will walk into the arena of the boxing gods, spurred on by the glorious ghosts of Kostya's golden punch and the knowledge his father's boilover of Judah can be the template for his own resurrection against Fundora. Tszyu's manager Glen Jennings was at the MGM Grand when Kostya iced Judah and is back to the same venue on Sunday hoping history repeats as the 'Soul Taker' looks to claim the coveted green WBC world title. 'It was almost 25 years ago that Kostya shocked the world against Zab and there's no doubt it's a great motivator for Tim,' Jennings said. 'Tim remembers his dad's great wins and how can we ever forget that perfect punch from Kostya that put Judah away. 'I was in the building that night, it was a special feeling, and I'm excited for Tim to get that same opportunity that Kostya had. 'Tim will be going into the same arena – The Grand Garden – and it will be nice to reminisce when the time comes on (Sunday).' Jennings recalls Kostya Tszyu facing the same adversity that his son Tim now confronts after his world-title loss to Fundora last year at Vegas' T-Mobile Arena, just 1300 metres away from MGM Grand. 'Zab Judah was the next big thing in boxing,' Jennings recalled. 'He was undefeated at the time (27-0) and the top of the tree. 'I remember they arrived in a 52-seat Greyhound bus with an entourage that included Mike Tyson and 50 Cent (American rap legend). 'There were just six of us and we watched as they all came into the lobby of the MGM Grand, it was like a circus. 'Kostya was very much the underdog. 'I s*** myself in the first round because Zab was so quick and I thought, 'My god, how's Kostya going to keep up with him?' 'But he was a bit more cautious in the second round and then Kostya cracked him twice, the chicken dance followed, and seconds later we were celebrating one of the greatest wins in history. 'It would be awesome to see Tim do something similar on Sunday and I believe he can.' Tszyu celebrated his seventh birthday in Sydney just 24 hours before Kostya's destruction of Judah. Tim treasures a famous photo of himself and younger brother Nikita running towards their elated dad, his three world-title belts strapped around him, as he cleared customs at Sydney airport. Tszyu ramped-up his preparations with a sharp gym session in 41 degree heat in Vegas on Wednesday. He is in supreme condition at 73kg and revelling in one of the best weight cuts of his career ahead of Saturday's weigh-in, where he must get down to the super welterweight limit of 70kg (154 pounds). The 30-year-old is mindful of Australia's Las Vegas jinx, with 11 of the nation's greatest fighters having lost in Sin City. They include Jeff Fenech, Jeff Horn, Michael Zerafa, Michael Katsidis, Jason and Andrew Moloney and even Tszyu himself. But Tszyu insists the demons of his first Fundora loss, marred by that infamous shocking head gash which required 10 stitches, have been buried. 'There's no doubts,' Tszyu said. 'I'm at the stage now where I've done the hard grind and I'll perfect the right game plan come fight night. 'I think I am more explosive than him (Fundora) and it's not just that, but I have the brains, too. 'He is naturally gifted with what he's got, but IQ wise, I'm a bit sharper.'
